Unverified image[edit]

Hi! Thanks for uploading Image:Drill.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{GFDL-with-disclaimers}} if you release it under the GFDL, or {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the images and I'll tag them for you.

If you uploaded other images, please clarify copyright for them as well, otherwise the images will eventually be deleted.

Thanks, Denni 01:39, 2004 Dec 13 (UTC)

Image:Wheelbig2.jpg has been listed for deletion[edit]

An image or media file you uploaded, Image:Wheelbig2.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.
Hey there, I noticed your comments on TheCoffee's talk page and think that the original image should definitely go back on the page with a note saying that it was taken on the opening. I do not like replacing images that others have placed on here as I do appreciate that it takes time and effort. The only reason I did so was because of a comment on the talk page asking for an image that didn't cut off part of the wheel. I can assure you it wasn't vanity as I had previously looked at the page to add an image and didn't as the article already had the said image. I reckon if you add it back on with a note about the historical significance it definitely is worthwhile. No hard feelings. Regards. SeanMack 17:15, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough - I'll try to tread gently! It was a strange day, poured with rain all afternoon, not at all easy to get a good shot of HRH etc from a long distance, but I reckon after spending three hours sheltering under a poly bag I need something to show for it - sdince then I have visited several times as I live just down the road, and got many more really crisp photos in better conditions.Excalibur 17:57, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Have you seen the opinions expressed on the image's description page? What's your take on that? Lupo 07:44, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I love the picture of the kid with the drill! I go to it sometimes just when I'm feeling blue and I want a lift. It's not just that it's a great picture of a kid who I would love to meet. There's a certain jaunty defiance in Dad's use of it. I like the "Here's a kid with Down syndrome. He's a dynamic person with skills and interests and a full, satisfying life. If he doesn't fit your stereotypes, get over it!" Thanks so much for posting it. 24.145.5.68 (talk) 00:35, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some help[edit]

I've fixed the image syntax for you over at Logba language (the problem was that you uploaded the image as image:Logbagirl.JPG (with uppercase JPG), and filenames are case-sensitive here. I hope you don't mind I removed the link to the Scottish friends of Logba site; as I said in my edit summary, it's interesting but not directly relevant to the article on the language. If you want to start Logba people, go right ahead! Best, — mark 14:19, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh and you might want to use the Show preview button to review your edits before you save a page. That way it's easier to see what might be going wrong. — mark 14:21, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't care how witty you think you're being with [1], calling Rangers fans "orange bastards" is unacceptable. Demiurge 22:24, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is it? Why exactly? That said, I'm not supporting Lennon, but I dont think evidence gathered using techniques like this (lipreading) is acceptable either - its an intrusion of privacy.

Things have moved on, who honestly cares apart from the wittery PC folk at the Scottish executive? Nowadays this is just ritualistic, playground stuff, totally harmless. Look, I'm a Rangers fan, English, and a Catholic, I usually go to matches with my friend who is an african Muslim, and as such I am very well qualified to have an opinion.

It's so inaccurate as to be laughable, - neither word is really much of an insult, given the way that the fan base is diversifying, is it?

A third of all children born these days are technically bastards, the word orange is hardly an insult - well most football fans wouldn't regard loyalty to the Dutch Royal family as critical to their identity would they? Times move on, what was a mortal insult a few years ago is now a bit of friendly rogueish banter. The best way to defeat sectarianism is to laugh at it together, not try to supress it. Lets not try and supress it 'cos of misplaced embarassment.

Image copyright problem with Image:Armsthumb.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Armsthumb.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

AfD Nomination: Carers[edit]

An editor has nominated the article Carers for deletion, under the Articles for deletion process. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the nomination (also see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Your opinions on why the topic of the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome: participate in the discussion by editing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Carers. Add four tildes like this ˜˜˜˜ to sign your comments. You can also edit the article Carers during the discussion, but do not remove the "Articles for Deletion" template (the box at the top of the article), this will not end the deletion debate. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Plooks, by Blisco, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Plooks fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

Dicdef, already defined at wikt:plook

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Plooks, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Plooks itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 18:00, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Genetic politics & reproductive technology[edit]

Hi Excalibur,

It seems you are popular with research students. I'm at the University of Sheffield, conducting PhD research into 'genetic politics and reproductive technology'. I read your comments here [2] and I wondered if you'd like to take part in my research project? I believe you'll be able to make a valuable contribution. Before you decide, you should be aware of what this involves. I want to email you with a few simple questions on the topics of the research. These emailed questions will be sent in stages, over a period of weeks, and all of the identifying information you provide will be treated with confidentiality. The research findings will be disseminated amongst stake holders in the field and I would be happy to share these findings with you prior to any publications. If you are interested, you will find my contact details on my userpage. Feel free to get in touch should you have any questions. Your valuable contribution would be much appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Do you still need the text for Carnival (کارنیول) or festival (فیسٹیول)...or was it the actual Urdu word you wanted? That would be "Mela" (میلہ -- which came out better in the heading).

Ah! I've been to Logba several times! When I'm in Ghana, I live in Hohoe and work in Gbi Kledjo. Have you ever been to Kledjo? I'm starting a 501(c)(3) for my school and hope to be going back before the year ends to supervise a fence project that will be containing the campus so that the children can't wander off -- there are 60 children and 2 housemothers who have to care for them during the time they're not in class, so kids tend to wander off and show up in downtown Hohoe a few hours later. It was so nice to see pictures of Ghanaian school uniforms again -- I miss my kids! --Allie 19:13, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would contest your deletion simply because people should have a right to know everything they can about DS. The most important fact about the research is not that supplements are being tested or used, but the general direction of the research. It has been found that DS folks have certain heightened needs for certain nutrients. What isn't clear yet is whether or not it can be fixed by supplements or whether this is a more profound problem than that. I don't think anybody has claimed that it is a done deal that supplements work. This is ongoing research. The most important information is that this is a direction some researchers are working on. It is hardly a commercial issue at this point, because as far as I know, nobody is selling these particular supplements in a commercial way.

Hi. I've actually removed the CSD tag from this article, because the criteria offered was invalid. So you should have some time to flesh it out a little more. Also, if it is deleted, the text can be recovered for you by any willing administrator. But I would suggest adding some more information and some evidence that the person meets Wikipedia: Notability (people). Natalie 22:00, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I like to edit bit by bit. theres plenty more to write about this oustanding American campaigner and author. Excalibur 22:03, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I took a quick look and it looks good - the MLA prize is an obvious notability assertion so it should be safe from a speedy delete. The only thing I've done so far is removed the "survived by" information, since that's more of an obituary thing than an encyclopedia thing. I'll wikify and add some cats, also. DS[edit]

Hi Excalibur. At the time I only told her the article was "open" for editing, and did caution her to ask for other opinions at the Talk page. As her trouble seemed to be simply with editing the page (which was semi-protected at the time), I never really checked back to see what content she had actually added (i.e. whether it was the paragraph she left at my Talk). I regret to say that you may have failed to highlight the problems in the Ernie article. Conway actually seems to be notable - at least from this article. I think you need to expand the article (what's his missus's name and where did he go to school) and explicate at length on steak pies and Cumberland sausages - perhaps even break out to separate articles. Have these by any chance been taken into space or mentioned in novels?

I don't disagree that the article is "unattributed self-agrandisement". However adding nonsense to it is not the appropriate response. Humour[edit]

Maybe you thought this was Uncyclopedia it isn't about humour, you were trying to make a point and failed. If you had created a stupid article I would have nominated it for deletion, as it was you created an article about an individual who has had national media coverage on more than one occasion and regular local media coverage. It could be sourced about and the coverage was not all trivial.

I manly deal with marital arts articles if you want to see a bad bio-article have a look at them ignoring this the result falls under the category of advanced humour, irony. --Nate1481( t/c) 17:21, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The Permission on the image says “non-commercial use only”, and the tags are for copyleft licenses — GFDL and CC by-sa, which do not allow such limitation.

What did you mean?

AFAIK, even if you remove the “non-commercial” part, laws of at least some countries will still require a model release for commercial(?) use, so that part is, probably, unnecessary.

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Image permission problem with Image:Andystrangeway.jpeg[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Andystrangeway.jpeg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Peripitus (Talk) 02:05, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for destroying my work. You asked me to provide proof that Andy had released this image into the public domain: I responded with a copy of the email from Andy to me doing just that. The image has been deleted anyway. Thanks - I won't bother editing wikipedia anymore or adding any more original content: you have convinced me that the real vandals are the admins - the new "parking wardens" of the Internet. The vision is dead as far as I am concerned - I simply have no time to play these silly games.

Stalking through the darkened undergrowth we find the fearsome Peripitus hunting down its prey. It traps its victim with a blast of poisonous goo from its slime glands. The goo goes to work straight away. The Peripitus then extends its tube mouth and sucks up the mushy remains. So watch out for the mighty Peripitus, terror of anything smaller than a jellybean!

Excalibur - your image is not permanently gone and can easily be retrieved. Where did the email go ? was it sent to permissions-en@wikimedia.org ? ps: more an onychophora than a troll - Peripitus (Talk) 21:16, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, well thats who you told me to write to. I did so. So IMHO, whoever took the picture away should now put it back, and if its so easy to retrieve, then they should do it. This is all just creating extra work for people, totally unproductive. Excalibur (talk) 09:36, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - as this can take up to a month ( as the system is run by time-limited volunteers) can you email it to me - I can undelete it and tag it as pending official confirmation ? - Peripitus (Talk) 11:43, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. howcheng {chat} 07:14, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hovercraft[edit]

Some time ago you asked about Bliss's involvement with the "test track" near Cambridge. Am I correct in assuming you mean the Tracked Hovercraft? Maury Markowitz (talk) 14:34, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hovercraft[edit]

I'm pretty sure that the statements in the TH article are correct in their current form.

Laithwaite didn't join TH until 1967, after a very public breakup with BR. Even then, he was simply retained as a "consultant". See this article on his joining the effort. This was at about the same time that he was first proposing the traverse-flux maglev, the first mention of which appears in the summer of 1967. Even though he was developing the maglev, he publicly supported TH's efforts to the end, and even after, as you can see here.

I am aware that Laithwaite had been pushing for the TH test track to be converted to a track for his maglev, but I failed to find any direct references, so I simply left this out. I'm also aware that the demise of TH led him back to BR, and this eventually created the Birmingham Maglev system, but I didn't mention that (although in retrospect...)

If you are referring to his earlier hovertrain efforts being based on hovercraft and not maglev, you can see a diagram here, which you'll note definitely uses hoverpads (levapads actually, I'm working on that article too). You can find many similar comments and drawings in a variety of sources. Maury Markowitz (talk) 12:47, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Whoa, I should have stuck with it a bit more. This reference clearly states that it was not until after TH died in 1973 that Laithwaite started making noise about the maglev alternative. Maury Markowitz (talk) 12:59, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So what's the chance we can track down some of the McAlpine work? I wrote to them, but as normal, was ignored. Maury Markowitz (talk) 02:16, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dean Close School[edit]

Hi,

I agree that the section (and probably some other sections) has serious problems, but I'd prefer it if you tagged it with something like "citations needed" instead of just deleting it. That way it gives the authors (not me) better chances to improve the article, and possibly educate them for the next time. So I AGF-reverted your change. -- Nczempin (talk) 10:43, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Stephen Gough, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Halifax (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). File source problem with File:Excalibur1.JPG[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Excalibur1.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Hi - you've been here long enough for WP:DTTR to apply, so I'm not going to put a patronising templated message on your page, but this is not the sort of change you can make to an article. The cited source supported the original wording - it didn't say anything like what you changed it to. I am assuming that this is a matter that you have a lot more personal experience of than me, and it would be totally inappropriate of me to challenge your personal views on it, but please don't change the page in a way that misrepresents the sources. So it goes[edit]

I don't blame you. One of the things I do in quixotic fantasies is rewrite that article from scratch. I've done it for a lot of chromosome disorder articles, but nothing nearly so huge, and I'm not really sure I want to become the guy who has to steward Wikipedia's article on Down syndrome for the rest of my life. A lot of our medical content has fairly uncomfortable intersections with disability rights. Vaticidalprophet 02:37, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

== Thanks : this awkward situation has been going on now for far too long, and it is time to be radical, I think. My patience has just run out: sure I have a personal interest as the father of a son with DS, but that doesnt't blind me to the bigger issues: the article needs pulled, and re-written from the perspective of a normal person with DS or their family, not that of some clinician. I have no problem with decent science, but theese are wonderful, warm and complex human beings we are discussing, not 'patients' and it is time to move on. Totally, and radically. Excalibur (talk) 02:56, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

December 2021[edit]

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Down syndrome shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Discretionary sanctions notices[edit]

Hi Excalibur. Please see the two notices below about heightened standards of conduct in two sensitive topic areas. I want to emphasize the "does not imply that there are any issues" part of these standard notices.

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in COVID-19, broadly construed. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

A tag has been placed on Denys Bliss requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://patents.justia.com/inventor/denys-stanley-bliss. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Notice that you are now subject to an arbitration enforcement topic ban[edit]

The following topic ban now applies to you:

You are indefinitely topic banned from COVID-19, broadly construed.

You have been sanctioned for repeated fringe pushing and incivility

This topic ban is imposed in my capacity as an uninvolved administrator under the authority of the Arbitration Committee's decision at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/COVID-19#Final decision and, if applicable, the contentious topics procedure. This sanction has been recorded in the log of sanctions. Please read WP:TBAN to understand what a topic ban is. If you do not comply with the topic ban, you may be blocked for an extended period to enforce the ban.

If you wish to appeal the ban, please read the appeals process. You are free to contact me on my talk page if anything of the above is unclear to you. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 22:22, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To enforce an arbitration decision, and for violating your topic ban, continuing fringe pushing., you have been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia.

If you believe this block is unjustified, please read the guide to appealing blocks (specifically this section) before appealing. Place the following on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Please copy my appeal to the [[WP:AE|arbitration enforcement noticeboard]] or [[WP:AN|administrators' noticeboard]]. Your reason here OR place the reason below this template. ~~~~}}. If you intend to appeal on the arbitration enforcement noticeboard, I suggest you use the arbitration enforcement appeals template on your talk page so it can be copied over easily. You may also appeal directly to me (by email), before or instead of appealing on your talk page.

Reminder to administrators: In May 2014, ArbCom adopted the following procedure instructing administrators regarding Arbitration Enforcement blocks: "No administrator may modify a sanction placed by another administrator without: (1) the explicit prior affirmative consent of the enforcing administrator; or (2) prior affirmative agreement for the modification at (a) AE or (b) AN or (c) ARCA (see "Important notes" [in the procedure]). Administrators modifying sanctions out of process may at the discretion of the committee be desysopped."
