I am impressed with the contributions you have been making with Ohio's townships. You seem to be singlehanded filling in the northeastern corner of our fair state and I am delighted by it. Rochester City vs. Metro[edit]

Can you tell me why you are removing Rochester NY based companies and facts from the Rochester NY wiki? I do understand the HUGE misconception between the municipality that is the city of Rochester vs the immediate suburbs and its metro, however you are not helping by deleting these facts without a replacement.

Case in point facts about Wegmans food Markets Inc. Yes, this company is technically based in the municipality of Gates, NY; however their mailing address is Rochester, NY USA. This will greatly confuse viewers if this info is deleted.

I suggest that you create a wiki that differentiates the Rochester city from the Rochester metro to finally help clarify this misconception. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.8.216.102 (talk) 21:56, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think I've been pretty clear why I am removing businesses, colleges, and other places outside of the city from the Rochester article. They are not in the city, and if the article serves the metro area, then the city itself has no article. Mailing addresses are irrelevant. The article is about the city of Rochester, not the post offices of Rochester. A page already exists for Rochester Metro. I've moved some of the original content from the city article over there, and you are welcome to add more.
For background, I came to the article knowing nothing about the city other than it's the home of Kodak. I found that it was full of untrue attributions to the city, such as Wegman's or RIT being there. So deleting the things in the city improved the article, but I have not problem with a metro article and contributed to it. --Beirne (talk) 22:41, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am finding some sick twisted Irony that the "Rochester (NY, USA) Institute of Technology (RIT)" is not on the Rochester, NY wiki. This university was founded within city limits...if you delete this you have to at least mention the years from when this university was housed in the city and when it was not.

Also how can Wegmans label its products as being sold from Rochester, NY USA, but not be on this wiki....please explain....this wiki IS about the entity Known as ROCHESTER....and not the city specifically. Read the article. Several weeks ago I included note in the college section saying that RIT was started in the city and moved to Henrietta in 1968. And Wegmans is not in the city of Rochester, it just has a Rochester mailing address. Post offices are often not designed to conform to city boundaries and are not a sure indicator of where something is. Since there is already an article about metro Rochester, having the article about the city of Rochester also cover the metro area means that there are two articles on the metro area and none about the city of Rochester. Do you really want the city of Rochester not to have an article in Wikipedia? --Beirne (talk) 06:34, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There are countless examples of companies and groups that claim to be in one city (usually a larger, well-known city) and actually aren't in that city and more still that have a ZIP code for one city but aren't in it (see Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for an example...or how bout the New York Giants and New York Jets?!). City articles are supposed to be about that specific city, which translates into what's within the actual city boundaries as opposed to what is near that city. --JonRidinger (talk) 06:41, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am not a regular editor on the New York City article and have enough articles to keep me busy as does Beirne. As for your request, the NYC page handles it rather nicely: The city is represented in the National Football League by the New York Jets and New York Giants (officially the New York Football Giants), although both teams play their home games at Meadowlands Stadium in nearby East Rutherford, New Jersey. Since the teams use New York in their names (not their mailing address), they do represent New York, but it is clearly mentioned that the teams do not play in New York City and the mention is very brief (plus both teams did once play in New York City itself). There is a clear difference, though, between a company having a Rochester ZIP code and a sports team representing a particular city. For companies that have been in the city of Rochester, they are mentioned in the History section, but companies in the area of Rochester don't really belong if they have never been in the city limits. Past companies could also be mentioned in the economy section as it can have an economic history as well as the present. But for the *present*, mentioning companies that are actually within the city of Rochester is appropriate for the Rochester article; those in the Rochester metro would be appropriate in that article and the specific city they are physically located in. --JonRidinger (talk) 05:33, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Beirne, How to define commercial site and academic site? I am in Microsoft. Our Msn.com is commercial site because it sells AD and 80% revenue is from AD although the content is free. My university site is stanford.edu. I do not think it is a commercial site, but an academic although it sells lessons and tuition is so expensive. Daniel

Try reading Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Interstate Highways. It says the lengths go in a table and that the 3di template is to be included below the spurs list. The lenghts are only in the first paragraph because you put them there and removed the length table earlier. Hholt01 08:17, 28 December 2005 (UTC) Hi Beirne, not sure why you choose not to have a profile page, but since you found it useful to delete a local transportation infobox I thought you might be interested in reading a local transportation story, brought to you by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, seems the Pittsburgh newspaper and the Pittsburgh hospitals are taking care of an interstate that has "nothing to do" with Pittsburgh, good thing Beirne knows better then a bunch of MD's and big city editors where I-70 does and doesn't go. I'll let you have some time to get back to me on the I-70, I-80, I-76, and I-79 comments because I would like to do this in the spirit of wiki, so just for you Beirne I will dismiss the MD's and pulitzer prize winning reporters for awhile. Hope we can come to a compromise on this matter.[reply]

I moved your posting from my profile page to my talk page, where it belongs. I'll create a profile page when I feel like it. I read the Post Gazette article. It says the event took place in Washington County, which according to my Rand McNally atlas is south of Pittsburgh. None of the other Interstates listed pass through the city of Pittsburgh. The newspaper covers the wider area but the template was for Pittsburgh Interstates, not suburban Pittsburgh Interstates or Western Pennsylvania Interstates. Yes, I'm being a stickler or worse, but the criticism of Wikipedia that keeps coming up in the media is its errors. BTW, my actual wording when I deleted I-70 wasn't that it had "nothing to do" with Pittsburgh. I ended up in a protracted edit war and in the end just got sick of the whole thing. vandalsim of akron article[edit]

removing info and claiming it does not exist when it does and has several related varified articles is vandalism. If you had good intent please look more into something before removing something you are unsure is false.

I've deleted Mickey Lee Brown a number of times and a few other non-famous people. I haven't claimed that anything doesn't exist. Mickey Lee Brown is apparently someone who was in a TV show whose article was deleted from Wikipedia because no one could prove that the show existed. --Beirne 00:20, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Baking Powder[edit]

I just wanted to say good job on your continuing the research into the Dr Price and baking powder situation that we have been commenting about on the Vincent Price talk page. As you find out more please feel free to alter the passage to reflect what you learn. I guess ny desire to keep some mention of it in the article is based on how much fun it was for me to find the ad in the Leadville paper. What I failed to put in my note was that this created a unique (for me anyway) connection as I had seen Vincent's one man play as Oscar Wilde here in Denver in the summer of 79 and he performed it on the stage of the Tabor Opera House (the same one that Oscar spoke on!) in Leadville that same summer. I also want to apologize for any rudeness in my comment on the talk page and I hope that you are having fun tracking down the specifics of the situation. Editing at wikipedia has sent me off on a couple of research projects that I would never have thought that I was going to learn about before I started contributing here. Cheeers and happy editing. Summit County places[edit]

Beirne, a couple of things:

  • What was wrong with my giving the location of Montrose? If it's part of Fairlawn, change it to say so, but surely it deserves to have the township, county, state, and country named, especially in a format where the townships are called townships rather than sounding like towns.
  • Ghent: this is the natural pronunciation of Ghent; people don't go around saying Gu-Hent or something. If you want to have a pronunciation listed, you should use IPA. Nyttend 13:18, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The location wasn't correct. It isn't a short distance from Fairlawn, it either includes Fairlawn or is adjacent to it, depending on your definition of Montrose. I personally think that listing each component is excessive but you are free to put them back in.
  • Pronouncing Ghent as Gent isn't obvious, so it is useful information in the article. People in the area know how to pronounce it but others may not. I know I've heard Ghent with a hard G from outsiders. You could have used IPA instead of deleting the hint, but I guess I'll go figure out how to do it now. --Beirne 15:53, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My point is that, since Montrose is part of a CDP, it can't be incorporated, since CDPs are unincorporated areas. As far as Ghent: I've never heard the placename pronounced as if it were "Jent"; I expected a stop, not a stop-with-spirant or whatever you call it how this place is properly pronounced. Airline offices[edit]

  • Airlines are notable organizations, and that is not disputed.
  • It is a given that Westchester makes it money from having the airport nearby
  • Therefore it would be natural to mention which airlines have their operations in Westchester, as a result of being close to the airport
  • Secondary sources do write about airline offices opening in cities

I've been keeping track of the edits being made by an anonymous editor regarding Malloy on the Van Halen page and edits regarding Excela Health on the Greensburg, Pennsylvania page where I regularly edit and from what I've been witnessing over the past several months, I'm about to come to the conclusion that this editor is either trying to disrupt the articles in some way by adding unsourced or unproven information on the Van Halen page or by removing/blanking information on the Greensburg, PA page.

On the Greensburg page, I've been having problems with the very same editor on numerous occasions, originally deleting Excela Westmoreland Hospital from the Points of Interest list. Even though the consensus leaned towards keeping the hospital on the Points of Interest section, it would continually be removed by the same poster, despite a changing IP address. Eventually, I removed the hospital from the list myself and created a specific section on medical facilities to see if the edit war would stop, but after I added the section, he removed the section once again, claiming that it was an advertisement or that the section was too short to even be included in the article. I've even gotten the article locked on numerous occasions to stop it but nothing has worked.

My reason for declining the speedy was that he might be notable — I don't want to A7 delete an article about someone who may well be notable. However, I'm rather uncomfortable with the article existing unless it can be significantly improved. Please feel free to go with another deletion method; I'd recommend a PROD. Re: Undoing a bunch of POV edits[edit]

I have not used Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser myself, but it seems like it would work. I will sometimes pull up a user's contribtions for a spammer and just click undo - can usually get 4 or 5 clicked at a time. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:08, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
