Re: Demographics of Italian comuni[edit]

Hello Eugene, yes, I have a table with the data of the 8000+ Italian communes. Data come from the national statistical agency of Italy (ISTAT). Let me know the format you prefer and send me your e-mail address, I'll gladly send you the whole bunch of figures. Bye. --Paginazero 16:04, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The file is on its way to you. It's about 2MB of size, I hope it's not too heavy for our mail servers. Let me know. Bye. --Paginazero 16:23, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The The Guardian Dispute[edit]

User:JzG just blocked me for "violating" "WP:POINT." I'd appreciate it if you'd unblock me so I can start an RFC on this. -Tchadienne

Presumably Tchadienne believes an RfC will prevail where proof by assertion on Talk:The Guardian failed. As was made abundantly clear, all that's needed are some credible sources. The fact that the people hoping to insert the content will resort to anything other than actually citing credible sources may be thought significanct... ;-) The WP:POINT was removal of a warning not to remove warnings from a Talk page. I think that's pretty blatant, and it's only a 24h block. It's being discussed on WP:ANI. Just zis Guy you know? 19:33, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grande Boucle[edit]

I believe that the current Grande Boucle race is in fact organizationally continuous with the previous version. However, the current race is not a UCI category 1 race and the competition field is significantly lower. Thus, organizationally continuous or not, it is simply not the same race as before. The current race is also much shorter than the previous version. Obviously, this needs to be further checked out and the page needs to reflect this. JFPerry 21:35, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Geocoding[edit]

Hi Eugene, yes, I do have the country data, as country name, decoded from the FIPS country codes. What format should the coord codes use? ISO 3166-1-alpha-2? Can you give me an example of an entry with both a type and a country encoded into it? -- The Anome 21:03, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. is it possible to complete all of the comunes in all the provinces in Italy automatically? Because I have been going through them manually and it takes ages. Italy comunes are an extremely important missing area of the english wiki. Can it be done easily? James Janderson

You are a genius my friend. Its just even 90 % of the comunes I have started in italy which is the majority of them!! don't even have the info boxes like yours. Your cleverness is great. James Janderson 13:46, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Communes in Italy - what to do with erroneous coordinates[edit]

I recently stumbled (when a similar Italian comunes project was launched on the fr Wikipedia) on a mistake in the ISTAT data used, that is an erroneous value for the latitude of Perrero. As I discovered on this discussion on the italian Wikipedia, this is a rare accident, but not absolutely unique.

As far as I can judge, there seems to be a misconception in the project, with the decision to use specific values "mapx" and "mapy" to position the dot on the map. It is not too difficult for a user to modify wrong latitudes or longitudes, but it is harder to modify also mapx and mapy.

Some Wikipedias have used a similar system, and I could not correct the map on them. As you can check, while I modified the latitude of Perrero following every interwiki link, the map is now correct on fr:Perrero and it:Perrero, but still inaccurate on eo:Perrero, nl:Perrero and now the English Perrero.

I think something should be done for this problem, but I don't know what ; as a Bot Keeper, I suppose you should have an idea of a reasonable procedure to remedy this problem. --French Tourist 18:46, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm back a few hours later. There is another problem : the values of mapy (I suppose "y" is for height) are wrong (or, hopefully, only the formula using them ; or only the map) ! Even with an accurate latitude, the dot is too high on the map. See an obviously flawed position at Exilles (compare with it:Exilles). --French Tourist 21:00, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your answer. I am back about Perrero (quite a minor issue !). I suppose the sites you checked also used the same flawed data bank than the WP ; just try to click from the Perrero page to a neighbouring commune, that is Angrogna or Perosa Argentina, the error appears obviously. Look for instance at this site for an accurate latitude... or simply check on a good paper map, as I did. --French Tourist 08:19, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for our friend French Tourist’s accuracy.
Nevertheless he simply forgot to split this issue to fr:Discussion Projet:Italie/Géographie/Commune italienne, our French environment dedicated to Italian municipalities since our WP:it=>WP:fr migration, last June.
Well, now, if you want to join us for some information or something else, you know where to do it.

From fr:Discussion Projet:Italie/Géographie/Commune italienne

Hi you are doung a brilliant job!!!! Genius idea. Keep up the good work James Janderson 10:38, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I am pretty sure that in Italy communes are listed by region rather than county. e.g. Cities and towns in Verona. James Janderson 12:04, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HI no you are right Veneto is the Region. For some reason the category is labelled cities and towns in THE veneto which explains the red ink on the label. Your category is correct the latter will need to be changed. James Janderson 12:14, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi yes. there are already about 230 comunes in the cities and towns in the Veneto category. I don't know why THE Veneto- if anything this is inconsistent with all the other regions, but it is possibly best to move them into the The Veneto category though because it is quicker. James Janderson 12:22, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ok cool. Then it should be Category:Cities and towns in Veneto as you rightly suggested. I wasn't aware of automatic cat. change. James Janderson 12:26, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HI good to see you are still doing brilliantly. The article count of wikipedia is going sky high!! I am amazed thst Italy is so sparsely covered. I noticed that Biella and another province in Piedmont begining with V still need covering. I don't know whether you know or are going to get round to it. Anyway I won't interrupt you. User:Eubot blocked[edit]

I apologize for having to block your bot account; however, I believe it's editing quite in excess of its trial. I've been having some discussion with individuals on IRC about the bot, and there's a lot of uncertainty regarding the free use of both the statistical data from ISTAT and some general concerns about accreditation and how the article text is being generated. If you could provide your source code and/or the algorithms and templates being used to generate the articles this may help to clear some things up. In any case, a trial run of around 15-30 articles was expected, whereas your bot has created more than 500 articles, which will be quite a headache if it turns out that the articles are not GFDL-compliant. The block will expire in 24 hours; however, please do not run the bot following the block's expiration without gaining prior approval from the bot approvals group. Please also contact me before running the bot again. Thanks. AmiDaniel (talk) 09:22, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Follow up on Eubot[edit]

Hi Eugene, I apologize for taking so long to respond--I've been quite busy lately. Anyway, I'm still waiting to here back from a few individuals on the Italian Wikipedia who are contacting the organization (I forget it's name) that provided your data about possible legal problems with releasing statistical and municipal data under the GFDL, as well as some possible problems with accreditation for where that data came from. But anyway, after further investigation of their licensing and policies, it seems there may well be no legal problems as was originally assumed; feel free to continue running your bot, and I will let you know the second we receive a response. I apologize about both blocking your bot and my ridiculously slow response. Thank you so much for your patience. AmiDaniel (talk) 18:00, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Getting Eubot a bot flag[edit]

Hello. I'm doing NP patrol right now, but it's mainly full of Eubot's entries right now, which makes finding other pages that should be deleted a little tricky. Oh, sorry. I didn't know bot-made pages still show up on Newpages. Though, really, they should be hidden just like on RC. I'll ask around about it. —Scott5114 18:09, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eugene, I see you've made this into a separate article, while it's in reality more like a wijk/buurt of Nederhorst den Berg, it isn't considered to be a separate entity. I think that either you should stress this in the article on Overmeer or merge the articles on Nederhorst den Berg and Overmeer. The word town is especially out of place, I think, if you want to mention it separately call it a hamlet (buurtschap?) or something like that. Lemme know what you think. Berghem[edit]

Hi Eugene. I noticed your work and some renaming of XXX (Limburg) to XXX (Netherlands); also your edits to another Dutch municipality, 'Berghem'. The latter also mentions the disambiguation page 'Berghem (disambiguation)' that (still) mentions 'Berghem (Limburg)' but its link does not go anywhere: no article, no redirect. The forementioned 'Berghem' is in North Brabant and I assume it best to create 'Berghem (Limburg)' or put a link under it on the disambiguation page, towards the municipality in Limburg of which Berghem is a hamlet. I'll leave it up to you to solve this, as you are more aware of these topics than I am. Kind regards. — SomeHuman 12 Jan2007 07:41 (UTC)

Location Maps[edit]

On the WikiProject Countries talk page, you had either explictly declared a general interest in the project, or had participated at a discussion that appears related to Location Maps for European countries.
New maps had been created by David Liuzzo, and are available for the countries of the European continent, and for countries of the European Union exist in two versions. From November 16, 2006 till January 31, 2007, a poll had tried to find a consensus for usage of 'old' or of which and where 'new' version maps. At its closing, 25 people had spoken in favor of either of the two presented usages of new versions but neither version had reached a consensus (12 and 13), and 18 had preferred old maps.
As this outcome cannot justify reverting of new maps that had become used for some countries, seconds before February 5, 2007 a survey started that will be closed at February 20, 2007 23:59:59. It should establish whether the new style maps may be applied as soon as some might become available for countries outside the European continent (or such to depend on future discussions), and also which new version should be applied for which countries.
Please note that since January 1, 2007 all new maps became updated by David Liuzzo (including a world locator, enlarged cut-out for small countries) and as of February 4, 2007 the restricted licence that had jeopardized their availability on Wikimedia Commons, became more free. The subsections on the talk page that had shown David Liuzzo's original maps, now show his most recent design.
Please read the discussion (also in other sections α, β, γ, δ, ε, ζ, η, θ) and in particular the arguments offered by the forementioned poll, while realizing some comments to have been made prior to updating the maps, and all prior to modifying the licences, before carefully reading the presentation of the currently open survey. You are invited to only then finally make up your mind and vote for only one option.
There mustnot be 'oppose' votes; if none of the options would be appreciated, you could vote for the option you might with some effort find least difficult to live with - rather like elections only allowing to vote for one of several candidates. Obviously, you are most welcome to leave a brief argumentation with your vote. Kind regards. — SomeHuman 7 Feb2007 20:10 (UTC)

Dutch villages[edit]

Hi Eugene,

Thanks for the work on the template. I have been using this index as a main source for the articles. Wells 00:59, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mechelen[edit]

While I was improving Mechelen (disambiguation), mainly adding Machelen as not to be confounded with Mechelen: Driving from Brussels (area Laken) by highway, the exit marked 'Machelen' is only a few hundred metres before the turn otherwise identically marked 'Mechelen' towards another highway that leads to the latter — while driving, people not clearly aware of Machelen's existance hardly spot the one different character... I meanwhile found another Machelen (Zulte), so your argument about a too lengthy lead for the 'Mechelen' article wins strenght. Though I find it rather useful to show the similar placenames, their origin is not always clearly documented as related to Mechelen; in particular Machelen might have an origin with identical meaning independent from Mechelen, though the distance (only 13 km) and Mechelen being mentioned 2 centuries earlier do not make that very likely. The lead offered an elegant way to show these placenames without directly needing a referenced connection, as I'm afraid your suggestion in the edit comment would require.
The disambiguation page is now modified: it is not like most disambiguation pages saying 'Mechelen may refer to: a gray cat, a miner's tool, an oriental religion', but that Mechelen is always a placename in Dutch-language. — SomeHuman 18 Feb2007 19:53 (UTC)

I have read the pages about this on wikipedia and I have came to you because you seem to be a person who knows how wikipedia is supposed to work and are most likely 100% neutral on this matter. The problem arises in that she has asked in the spirt of resolving the conflict we were having other people who are not 100% neutral it seems to comment on the matter. These being the user User:Longhair and the userUser:Alison in particular who have not bothered to justify anything that they have done. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Chinese Engineering Students' Association (CESA), by GreenJoe (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Chinese Engineering Students' Association (CESA) seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Chinese Engineering Students' Association (CESA), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 04:09, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

French communes[edit]

Hi Eugene. I wonder if you still have plans to have Eubot run create the pages on the many missing French municipalities, like you did for Italy. The existence of a large number of municipalities that aren't covered makes it hard to make pages like Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/fr since one has to wade through the large number of bot-appropriate articles. There has been a request for a Polish version, for instance. Rigadoun (talk) 19:07, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

White-breasted Guineafowl[edit]

Hi Eugene, thanks very much for adding the image of the white-breasted guineafowl. I have been looking for quite some time for a picture of this animal, but without success. I have come across this picture, but I didn't know it could be used because of the expired copyright. Do you perhaps know if there is also an image of the black guineafowl?

PS It would be even better to have a photograph of white-breasted and the black guineafowl, but I'm afraid someone has to go to Africa for that...

I have changed from "nobots" to "bots|deny=SieBot,A4Bot,AlleborgoBot,Thijs!bot,YurikBot,Tsca.bot,Eskimbot". this is a bit of an experiment, with a small number of articles, but I hope that it will improve the rare use of the template. I have made a master list of interwiki bots at {{bots}}. Rich Farmbrough, 15:10 31 October 2007 (GMT).

Hello, I wonder if you would be able to update the missing encyclopedic articles list for Spanish, which recently finished its first list (from two years ago)? Please answer or leave comments at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/es. Speedy deletion of Moses de Tordesillas[edit]

A tag has been placed on Moses de Tordesillas requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article Pieter van Anraedt, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. 1000 missing Italy infoboxes[edit]

Hi. I've compiled a list of Italian comuni without an infobox - I was wondering if you could add them? There's about 1000 on that page, which are just the ones within WikiProject Italy, I know there's others that haven't been tagged by the Project yet (most of those in the Marche for instance) but that would be a big help, I've got an experimental bot that does importance assessments based on the population found in the infobox. Not everything in that list is necessarily a commune (it was based on the Cities and towns... categories) but I guess you should be able to check the it.wiki article to see if there's a Comune infobox there. Eubot[edit]

Eubot may run into trouble whenever other templates in the taxobox differ from the normal templates, such as when Plantae is rendered in italics Plantae. In this case, the color is lost. I've encountered this a few times while removing the template "color = lightgreen" and had to remove the italics. JoJan (talk) 18:59, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nobots on articles[edit]

I'm sorry, no offense intended, but I don't care what the page history says. Using {{nobots}} on an article is tantamount to saying "I own this article and I am deciding who gets to edit it and who does not." That is not how Wikipedia works. If there is a bot that is making inappropriate edits, you can and should report the error to the bot operator, and if he/she is not responsive, escalate it to the Bot Approvals Group or administrators. Blocking all bots from editing because of some individual bot's problem is overkill. --Russ (talk) 13:16, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Eubot double-redirects[edit]

Eugene, Eubot has been creating literally thousands of double-redirects. For example, it made a redirect from 30-years'-War to 30-years’-War, but that target is already a redirect to Thirty Years' War. Scientific classification[edit]

Surnames list[edit]

Thanks for the surnames list. See Wikipedia talk:Suggestions for name disambiguation#Restarting this project?. I think that is the most practical place to get people interested in this. Would you have time to look at how things were done there, and how to include the {{otherpersons}} templates and its derivatives? For example, see here. Carcharoth (talk) 10:21, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if you found all the discussions I started on this (really, really shouldn't have done that, but it does seem to touch a lot of areas - never got round to asking the Categorisation people in the end, either), but the discussions are here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. I think your bot could be a great way to do this if done properly. My last attempt failed because I thought the people at WP:WPBIO would be interested in this, but in fact it is more naturally a disambiguation type of thing. Anyway, some of those long posts I made, I would be interested in your opinions, if you have time, especially the idea of a supercategory for all people articles. I think the stages required are fairly simply: (1) Think up a good name and location for the supercategory and then consider whether it should be a hidden category or not; (2) generate a clean list; (3) split out the non-DEFAULTSORTed articles and start a project to add DEFAULTSORT; (4) populate the supercategory; (5) arrange for articles from stage 3 to be added to the supercategory and for new people articles to be either tagged for addition of DEFAULTSORT, or to have DEFAULTSORT added and put in the supercategory. That way, the supercategory would be an index of all people articles. Whether there are technical restrictions on a category with 500,000+ articles, and how long it would take a bot to take 500,000+ articles, is something I think also needs to be considered. I think I need to write this all up on its own page. Would you be interested in reading the previous discussions if I can remember where they are? Carcharoth (talk) 23:53, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there. I can't remember how long you said it would take to come up with the list you were thinking of doing, but I thought I'd ask you if anything came of this or not? Carcharoth (talk) 16:14, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hadn't seen that new list. Thanks for pointing it out. I noticed that some items on that list had already been created. One was a redirect. The other two I looked at had been created by User:JLaTondre. Would it be an idea to drop him a note? Carcharoth (talk) 17:14, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hiya. I noticed Aalbers. Shouldn't that have {{surname}} instead of {{dab}}? If you are still experimenting, just say so and I'll try and be patient! :-) Carcharoth (talk) 01:10, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
About the location of lists of people, did you see the deletion discussions for List of people by name? See Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/List of people by name and then Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2007 May 23. I guess we want to avoid recreating that, though I note that the comment by Ceyockey "A better way would be to request that some back-end gap analysis be done via direct queries against the database in order to scope out the problem" seems to describe what you have done to generate your list. I'll drop him a note, shall I? Or better, still, let's decide on what the central place should be, and who to notify and where to announce it in case we miss anyone or others want to help. In particular, I'd like to see this bit noted somewhere more permanent: "I've found 477579 articles on individuals; they have about 175,000 distinct surnames. Of these surnames, 116,000 are redlinks (so they would be inlcuded on User:Eugene van der Pijll/surnames); 95,000 of those redlinked surnames are carried by only one person in the database." That sort of data is gold dust for people who don't have the time or resources to run queries. Carcharoth (talk) 13:38, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(unindenting) It is also interesting to compare your number (477,579) with the number at Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Biography articles by quality statistics (currently 521,632). I presume the difference (some 50,000) is due to how you found your list (some combination of birth and death categories and DEFAULTSORT or category pipe sort keys?), and articles with the WPBiography template that are not people (eg. music bands and so on). Carcharoth (talk) 13:43, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The new version looks OK, though there are a few points. Pedro Abad Santos seems to have been missed, even though the "lifetime" template on the page uses "Abad Santos" as the sort key. Note that {{lifetime}} includes DEFAULTSORT, though there was a big debate here about whether hiding this use of DEFAULTSORT inside a template was OK or not. I tried to explain how it wasn't, and how it was misleading, but I came to the debate too late. Your new version of the page also has some Unicode(?) problems, unless the "..." bits under "Aas" and "Aaberg" were deliberate? It is also hard to assess how clean your list and database is unless the whole list is there. For example, the Mc and Mac bits. Carcharoth (talk) 22:37, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is an old discussion here. But undoubtedly part of the central discussion will be on issues like that, and on getting people who know about these sort of issues to turn up and help out. The issue of Asian names and other non-Western standards are also something that needs to be looked at when considering what a "surname" is. See Wikipedia:Categorization of people#Ordering names in a category for the main issues with regard to diacritics and internal capitalisation, and why sort keys appear differently to the actual name (apologies if you know this already). For your purposes, capitalisation matters because (unlike with sort keys) you are generating something that people will see. I suggest comparing the sort key text string with the title and seeing how it varies, if your program can do that. There are bound to be inconsistencies in any automatically generated list, related to almost all the examples given at that categorisation guide, but then that is what we have humans for - to correct such inconsistencies and work out what should be going on! :-) Carcharoth (talk) 06:54, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • This confused the hell out of me! I was looking at the page thinking "I'm sure those "what links here" bits weren't there before...". :-) Carcharoth (talk) 14:41, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did three more. Abbad was interesting. I think we need more people. Who were you thinking of advertising this to? Also, do you agree with the use of {{distinguish2}} for Abbadi and Abbadie? Similar looking and sounding names (if you mispronounce them), but different origins. Carcharoth (talk) 21:52, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eugene, Sorry about the pile-on over your disambiguation page idea. I wasn't trying to set you up for a beating, honestly! I hope you didn't take offence. And, importantly, if you find pages where both first and last are the same then that would be very interesting - I don't know if your bot/code has the capability to do that. SurnameList Template[edit]

Eugene, thank you very much for posting the SurnameLinks template. I hate to ask this, as it seems to punish you for your competency, but could you provide any explanation regarding its expected use (including perhaps what is in and out of scope) and how exactly to use it? I am looking for a template that adds a box to the bottom of an entry for an individual that points the user to an entry for the applicable surname. The surname and surname stub templates do not appear to perform this function.--Rpclod (talk) 13:36, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oath of Abjuration[edit]

I noticed that you changed the name of "Act of Abjuration" to "Oath of Abjuration" in March 2008. A few weeks later I rewrote the article. I am unhappy with the name change (see the discussion page of the article) and so are others. Could you please explain your reasons for the name change on that discussion page? My main objection is that "Act of Abjuration" is the established English regular expression for the Plakkaat. Also, there is a legitimate English "Oath of Abjuration", that has its own page as Abjuration, probably because "Oath of Abjuration" was already taken. If you don't object, I'd like to reverse the change, though that will mean a lot of work.--Ereunetes (talk) 20:00, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved the article to Act of Abjuration today and made all the appropriate adjustments (It turned out that there was a redirect page "Oath of abjuration" with an undercase "a" that redirected two links inappropriately; the kind of thing a robot would not catch). Thanks for your advice in the matter, and again sorry for th initial misunderstanding.--Ereunetes (talk) 20:57, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

French commune infoboxes[edit]

Hi. We have a large back log of French commune articles to add the infoboxes from French wikipedia Status check. All that needs doing is copying the infobox directly from the French wikipedia equivalent. Please see Vulaines. All that needs doing for each article is cutting and pasting the infobox from French wiki into every article which must be bot compatible. Taxoboxes without images[edit]

Hi, it looks as if SVG images in taxoboxes are not counted when producing the list of tree of life articles without images. Is that intended ? Shyamal (talk) 15:04, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That is strange because I have added SVG images to some bird boxes like the one on Crab Plover (June 2007) but the script that has analyzed the Jan/March 2008 dump has listed the bird article as lacking an image. Several others (Rufous-crowned Sparrow) too but I presume some are due to the date of the dump. Shyamal (talk) 01:48, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eugene, have just seen the Caspian Plover image extracted from my video-clip, what did you use to do this....I'm impressed with the quality. Currently some Bird Project members don't like the quality of the 'thumbs' that I'm using to display my video-clips It would be great if we could improve this display using grabs from these. Speedy deletion of William Bond[edit]

A tag has been placed on William Bond requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the article or have a copy emailed to you. Stevie is the man! star names[edit]

What's up with all the highly incorrect star name redirects, that are highly inappropriate, that your Eubot created last year? Since Bayer designation says that Latin lettered stars are different from Greek lettered stars, melding the two is not a good idea. And the stars themselves exist as the English Word for the Greek letter, and not the Greek letter itself. 76.66.201.179 (talk) 14:10, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Eugene van der Pijll, this is a message from an automated bot to inform you that the page you created on September 30 2005, Carlson Inlet, has been marked for speedy deletion by User:Zoomzoom99 (page has mainspace links, and 11 edits). This has been done because the page is either pure vandalism or a blatant hoax (see CSD). If you think the tag was placed in error, please add "{{hangon}}" to the page text, and edit the talk page to explain why the page should not be deleted. Ouderkerk/Ouwerkerk[edit]

Hello, Eugene! I'm curious about the Ouderkerk/Ouwerkerk confusion (well, confusing to me, anyway). That the lords of "Ouwerkerk" were buried in "Ouderkerk" had always seemed odd, so learning that Ouderkerk is an older spelling of Ouwerkerk clears that up. It would be nice if there were an online reference to place in the article, if you know of one (I couldn't find one after a brief search). I also have a question about the transliteration: I see that "ouder" means "older", so the literal translation (not transliteration) into English for Ouderkerk would be "Olderchurch" or just "Oldchurch". Does "Ouwer" mean anything in Nederlands? And if not, then would it be true to say that "Ouderkerk aan den IJssel" had its spelling modernized, while "Ouwerkerk" in Zeeland didn't, but both names mean the same thing? And, if you know, why did General Ouwerkerk transliterate his name to Overkirk (which at least sounds like it's Scots), rather than translate it to Oldkirk or Oldchurch, which would be closer to what the word means in Nederlands? (I can understand why he just transliterated the name into French: Vieille-Église is nowhere close to Ouderkerk.) Thanks for your knowledge! Pilch62 (talk) 20:07, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I don't know if you are still making maps, but now that Medemblik, Noorder-Koggenland and Wognum have merged, the locator maps need to be updated. Vlodrop-station[edit]

You created Vlodrop-station. I am now drafting a closely related article, that'll probably be called "MERU, Holland" and which is mostly about the Maharishi's ownership. It'll also have a short overview of the Kolleg St. Ludwig history. It's currently in User:Will Beback/Scratchpad (for a limited time only - who knows what'll be there in the future). I may end up copying or moving some of the text you wrote in Vlodrop-station to that new article. If you have any concerns or contributions, let me know or just edit freely. I'm trying to find more Dutch sources, though I'm limited to Google's gibberish translations. If I understand correctly, there are active issues with the property and the local government. Anyway, you appear to be mostly dormant so this may just be for your information. Thanks for your contributions to the project.   Will Beback  talk  10:24, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Interview Regarding Wikipedia Bots[edit]

Greetings Eugene van der Pijll-

My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Wikipedia editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Wikipedia. As a member of the bot community and bot operator, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). I am completely flexible and can work with your schedule. The interview will take approximately 30-45 minutes.

My dissertation project has been approved both by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Oregon, and by the Research Committee at the Wikimedia Foundation. You can find more information on the project on my meta page.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you to set up a time to chat. Thank you very much.

MSU Interview[edit]

Dear Eugene van der Pijll,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 23:19, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Distances in Miles?[edit]

In the article Colijnsplaat I saw the distance to Middelburg given as 20 km. When I look at different navigators I see the distance 30/31 km. I noticed the same error at 's-Gravenpolder, 's-Heer Abtskerke and some others. With a difference of about 1,5 it looks like the number is in miles, not km! As your bot wrote the article Colijnsplaat and the others, maybe more, I ask you to look at this. Salix2 (talk) 12:30, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The distance along the road from Middelburg to Colijnsplaat is 28 km according to Google Maps, but that includes a large detour. The distance in a straight line is much shorter; in my atlas, I measure it to be exactly 20km.
The bot based its distance on the RD coordinates, which are in km, not miles. Eugène van der Pijll (talk) 22:06, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for misunderstanding. It seems rather useless to me to give distances by air, other then distances like going from Amsterdam to New York, or things like that. Salix2 (talk) 22:57, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted to of my actions. Salix2 (talk) 23:04, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Odd question[edit]

Sorry for an odd question, however - how do you pronounce your first name in Dutch? I couldn't find any sources for a Dutch pronunciation - only French, German and English. Thanks in advance :) TheDarkSavant (talk) 14:23, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In Dutch, my name is pronounced (more or less) the same as in French. When I speak English, I use the English pronunciation, so you can say it however you like, I don't mind. --Eugène van der Pijll (talk) 21:50, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

So really like this then - øʒɛn. I always thought it might be something like Eugeen (also spelled like that), because of the Dutch way of pronouncing "g". I have the same name, and was having discussions with my Dutch colleagues :) Thanks for the insight. TheDarkSavant (talk) 18:01, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article Johann Albrecht Adelgrief has been proposed for deletion. The proposed-deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:32, 1 November 2020 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Notice

The article Mount Weihaupt has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Antarctic stub not passing WP:GEONATURAL; only substantial source available is GNIS

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
