Sections (land)

That link to [[section (U.S. land surveying)|section]]s was there for a purpose. THat article used to be called someting link "Section (land)" before somebody got the bright idea to rename it. See Talk:Section (U.S. land surveying). Putting the link here made sure that "Dominion Land Survey" got included in the "What links here" page, in case somebody else got around to renaming that article before I did. Your change will now give me the impetus to make the change I discussed on that talk page, since nobody has objected and it has been there a little while anyway. You can help out in rewriting that article to include the very similar Canadian usage along with the U.S. usage, okay? Let me know as soon as you can (preferrably on that talk page so that others will know what we are doing) if you have any strong preferences as to what the name should be. I think "section (land)" would be best, "section (survey)" or "section (land surveying)" gives more of an impression that this is only used in reference to the surveying and not in our everyday lives Gene Nygaard 14:49, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Surveying category page

I have attempted to fix the categorisation of Category:Surveying as per your note of 1 Feb. Note that a category page links upwards by having parent categories to become part of a theme - see Wikipedia:Categorization in particular the section 3.4 might shed some light. Question About Melbourne

I lived in Melbourne for six months in the early 90s and noticed something about the city that I thought you might be able to explain. It appears that the center part of Melbourne is laid out on a grid that is oriented differently than the grid the rest of the city is laid out on. I assumed that the older grid was laid out on magnetic north whereas the later grid was laid out on true north. But I don't know the variation for the area, so I haven't been able to confirm that. Is my assumption correct, or is there another explanation?

Tedd - I don't know Melbourne very well - have only been there for a few days on several occassions - but looking at a map I can see what you mean. The inner city blocks are oriented NW, whereas the outer areas are NE. These outer areas were definitely set out on a grid based on magnetic north - the declination along Australia's east coast varies from 12 or 13 degrees in Tasmania to 5 or 6 degrees here in North Queensland where I live. Can't explain the inner city orientation, but it appears to be parallel to the nearest section of the Yarra River. Maybe the topography also had something to do with it. --Mikeh 10:22, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Privy Counsellor v Privy Counsellor

You've moved, without discussion, lists of Privy Counsellors to "Councillors", claiming this was an incorrect spelling. Did you consider the following, on the Privy Council of the United Kingdom, which shows why this move is misguided.

Both "Privy Counsellor" and "Privy Councillor" may be correctly used to refer to a member of the Council. The former, however, is preferred by the Privy Council Office,[18] emphasising English usage of the term "Counsellor" as "one who gives counsel", as opposed to "one who is a member of a council." A Privy Counsellor is said to be "sworn of" the Council when he or she first joins it.[19]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.
