Bad edits for Unicode beyond the first plane

Hello,

For Unicode characters beyond 0xFFFF (more than 16 bits), it seems that FlaBot makes incorrect edits. For instance, in the Bohrium article, this edit changed the valid [[zh:𨨏]] (note 166415 = U+28A0F) into the invalid [[zh:��]]. I think when your bot looked at the Chinese page for Bohrium it did not correctly handle the Unicode surrogate characters that are used when encoding a Unicode character greater than 0xFFFF. -- Curps 09:32, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

Mediawiki does NOT use UTF-16 so surrogate pairs have no relavence to mediawiki itself. What it looks like is happening is the bot is using UTF-16 as an internal format without realising that it contains surrogates. Plugwash 15:19, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

Boolean algebra

Just a heads-up: The correct enwiki article to link to simple:Boolean algebra is not Boolean algebra, but rather Boolean logic. I have made this correction; I'd ask FlaBot not to revert it. The links to simple:Boolean algebra from the Boolean algebra articles in other languages (e.g. it:Algebra di Boole) are probably OK, given that few other languages have an article corresponding to Boolean logic. I suspect it is (as a practical matter) impossible to translate Boolean algebra into simple English. --Trovatore 19:43, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Respirator vs. Ventilator

I am completely rewriting the English respirator entry, and FlaBot keeps adding incorrect links to non-English Wikipedia entries with the title 'respirator.'

A respirator is a device that protects the wearer from harmful or toxic fumes, dusts, vapors, and/or gases. A ventilator is a device that assists breathing. Intensive care patients are breathing with the assistance of ventilators, not respirators. It's easy to confuse the two, especially since mainstream media insists on reporting some famous person is "on a respirator right now," and the editor who first created respirator did exactly that.

If Wikipedia is a true encyclopedia, we should use the correct names for pieces of equipment, and if we do so the English entry should link to correct translations. As far as I can tell, FlaBot insists on linking respirator with articles that I believe translate to entries about ventilation. I have removed these links twice now, because what I'm working on doesn't translate to the pictures of hospitals and mechanical ventilators I see in those entries.

I can't write in German, Dutch, Polish, and the like; all I can do is make the English entry for respirator as accurate as I can. Because of that, FlaBot needs to do one of two things:

• start linking the English ventilator entry to the non-English entries it currently links to the English respirator entry; or
• stop linking to those non-English entries until respirator is completed, at which time accurate translation can be done of the new content and FlaBot can be reprogrammed.

generally the way to deal with this is to go fix the back links from the other wikipedias to here. the bots should then pick up on that and stop re-adding the links. Plugwash 15:30, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Removing interwikis from categories?

zh links

Both representations are unicode, one is unicode characters literally included in the body text the other is unicode html entities. Since the wikipedia conversion to utf-8 there has been a general move to using unicode text literally in articles. That section you link to seems confused and written by someone who doesn't understand how html and character sets/encodings fit together. Plugwash 15:55, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Stroud

I see the link to nl:Stroud has been reinstated. I had moved it to Stroud (district) where it belongs since the entry in the Dutch WP obviously refers to the district rather than the town. So I've deleted it again at Stroud, Gloucestershire. Flapdragon 22:43, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Commons

Hi. I think the IW link checker is a great idea. Do you have (or can you make) a similar program that works in Wikimedia Commons and lists the images that exist both on Commons and in wikipedias? Whenever I go to Commons I always find images that are uploaded both to Commons and to another wiki, I bet there are hundreds of them, and maybe lots of them were uploaded 3, 4 or more times to Wikimedia's servers, wasting a lot of space. If there was a page similar to IW checker, where we could check if the images by the same name are really the same, and if the one in Commons is not untagged, the bot could place a nowcommons message on the image version uploaded to individual wikipedias... Problem

The bot changed AJ Styles BACK to A.J Styles, which is completely wrong. Just about every wrestling site has him listed as AJ Styles. TNA (the main promotion he works for) lists him as AJ Styles. That alone should be enough to be proof that it's the correct spelling.

Indigo

I notice the bot changed Indigo so that the link to the German WP went to the dye instead of the color. My guess is this is related to the fact that some of the pages for Indigo on some language sites cover both the dye and the color, while other have them as separate articles. A request for assistance

Would you support the concept of moving the Earhart "myths" to a separate page or article? The reason for my suggesting this is that the main article should be an accurate and scholarly work while the speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding the disappearance of Amelia Earhart are interesting, they belong in a unique section.
