Bank of Sweden Prize in Economics[edit]

There is no such thing as a Nobel Prize in Economics. Nobel never instituted a prize for economics, nor would he. Economists have free-rided the event to enhance their profession. The Bank of Sweden Prize for Economics was instituted with public money, tipical, and they forced their hand to be given at the same date. The marketing ploy is in the "In Memory of Alfred Nobel", which belies a laugh. Not even the most liberal economist would honor a monopolist business man, warmonger, inventor of Dynamite, suplier of the military. Only wikipedia can tell the truth. Britanica hires economists to write about the Nobel Prize in Economics and spread the small lie around.

There most certainly is a Nobel Prize in Economics. OK, it's called "Economic Sciences". -- Zoe
The question is whether it's really a Nobel prize. It wasn't established by Nobel's will, but by the Bank of Sweden many years later. Vicki Rosenzweig
It appears on the nobel prize web site. The peace prize wasn't established by Nobel, either. Warren Dew (talk) 18:31, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not retired[edit]

I removed some false information that claimed he has retired. He is in fact still teaching as of 2003. See http://www.src.uchicago.edu/users/gsb1/ MB 17:31 22 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Edit to infobox[edit]

Per MOS Infoboxes, the purpose of an infobox is "to summarize key facts about the article in which it appears". Not explicitly stated here, but well understood in practice is the notion that material in an infobox is deliberately redundant; any item in an infobox should be found, almost always with supporting references, in the main text of the article.

The infobox for an economist mirrors that purpose, but is more explicit: "Entries in influences, opposed, influenced, and contributions should be explained in the main text of one of the articles. Those that are not mentioned in the main text may be deleted."

Based upon these policy reasons, I've removed the entries in the "influences" and "influenced" fields.--SPhilbrickT 00:15, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Religious affiliation[edit]

I have heard from several personal sources that Gary Becker was raised Jewish, but converted to Shia Islam before he passed. Anyone know if there is anything to corroborate this?--Love to help Wikipedia (talk) 17:24, 2 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Crime and Punishment - puh-leeze![edit]

The section contains no citations and implies he was the first person to realize that breaking the law is , or can be, an economic decision (partially, conditionally, situationally). Give me a break. I guess this means that 'deterrence' is a new concept? Please. If his ACTUAL (if any, I don't know his work) contributions can't be explained, this section should be removed.72.172.10.194 (talk) 14:59, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I added some cites. Not hard because google scholar lists over 10,000 books and articles that cite Becker on crime. They agree he was the first person in 200 years to study the economics of crime & deterrence.Rjensen (talk) 17:53, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Chiappori's comment on this article[edit]

Dr. Chiappori has reviewed this Wikipedia page, and provided us with the following comments to improve its quality:

The article is clearly written but only covers a fraction of Becker's contributions. in particular, the analysis of family economics is way too short; it does not cover Becker's analysis of domestic production, mentions his work on matching in a far too elusive way, and is way too superficial on human capital.

We hope Wikipedians on this talk page can take advantage of these comments and improve the quality of the article accordingly.

Dr. Chiappori has published scholarly research which seems to be relevant to this Wikipedia article:
