Real Name[edit]

French Wikipedia contributors seem to agree on "Gilbert Bourgeaud" being only an alias and "Robert Denard" being his birth name. They cite three sources in the discussion page (unfortunately not in the article itself):

  • The French official "état civil"
  • "Le roi de Fortune" by Pierre Lunel, Editions N°1 1991
  • "Corsaire de la Rébublique" by Bob Denard, Robert Laffont 1998

POV Issue[edit]

I'm not sure that this article is unbiased. Statements such as

"He is responsible for untold numbers of deaths and contributed greatly to the destabilization of Africa that continues today."

and

"His "favorite" target were the Comoros."

don't seem to me to reflect a NPOV. I'm not familiar enough with the subject matter to make a correction, but perhaps someone else is.

Brithdate[edit]

I have seen several Google sites that say he was born on January 20. One of them even has his horoscope cast for that date. RickK 23:54, Jan 23, 2005 (UTC)

This need serious work.[edit]

There's no doubt that Denard was sometime hired by French secret services however the support of South Africa to Denard seems also well established. Ericd 22:58, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

proper citations[edit]

this article seems to lack a serious number of citations, particularly the sections concerning his alleged ties with the French secret service. given his death, there is bound to be increased traffic to his entry - I recommend those of you who know more about this fascinating man make sure all of your facts check out!!!

I removed the sentence about Denard working for/with MI6. If it's a notable controversial accusation, it should be worded as such with the proper citation. In the case, the sentence reads as speculation by an editor. --68.26.86.46 18:11, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comoros 1995 coup[edit]

What did happen is rather confusing, but according to Wikipedia this is certainly not true:

Dates inconsistent[edit]

In the section “1989 coup and subsequent trial”, it states “he had to face charges in May 1999 for his role in the 1989 coup”. Then “Afterward, president Mohamed Taki Abdulkarim declared that he refused Denard's return to the Comoros. On 6 November 1998, Abdulkarim died under suspicious circumstances.” So Abdulkarim died a year before he refused Denard re-entry - after the trial??? perhaps the May 1999 date is incorrect?
