I attend the church and will be adding some more information. I might put the controversies in a sepreate section. Paul3144 23:15, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I noticed that the names of the clergy and staff of the church was wikified, however I believe it would not be prudent to provide links (and maybe articles) for the non-famous clergy and staff, whereas providing a link and article to the much more famous Homer Lindsay would be far more interesting. I also believe the article should include the controversy within it - after all, "Controversy of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida" is quite a mouth full for an independent article.

I recently added an explanation of the controversy surrounding the First Baptist Church. I'm not exactly sure what year the blue law was repealed though. I am not trying to offend anyone by exposing the controversy surrounding this church, and to be fair, I know nothing of their good works beyond the countless billboards within the city of Jacksonville that espouse the church and visage of Jerry Vines... So if somebody more knowledgable could add to the article....

Adding the names of all the staff is massive overkill. The Pastor's name is obviously significant, why are the others there? Wouldn't it be better to provide the link to the church website and let them keep the list up to date?

Also, is a church campaigning against Sunday trading that controversial? Many churches campaign against something they see as wrong. It's called democracy. DJ Clayworth 17:47, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I could not agree more with you about the list of the staff. And on second thought, it was not controversial that the church was opposed to it - it was just the primary opposing party in a very controversial issue. Here's my proposed rewording-
The church strongly supported a controversial effort to preserve a blue law banning Sunday alcohol sales, however the blue law was repealed despite the church's protests.
The church was, and remains, a powerful political force within Jacksonville. This was just an overt action of the church attempting to influence the secular affairs of the city.

About the links to all the staff, in retrospect you are right. As a compromise let's leave the staff on there but not with a sepreate article, OK? I like your rewording about the Blue law, do you want to go with, everybody?

It says that Dr. Vines described Muhammed as a 'demon possessed pedophile,' which is true, but shouldn't the article point out that he was quoting Dr. Ergun Caner, a Bible scholar and former Muslim? Chimerical05 19:38, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is it unusual that Mac Brunson is leaving FB Dallas for FB Jackdsonville? Both are pretty high up in the Southern Baptist convention.

Controversy section[edit]

The controversy section here is overblown. First, it has more information than the actual description of the church. Second, some of the "controversies" aren't even real- many groups were against the amphitheatre (of course, they were all wrong :) ), and the ministry for the "sexually broken" hasn't attracted any more controversy than other similar groups, as far as I and google can tell. There is also no description of why the lighthouse was controversial. Third, the reference links are all useless to anyone who is not a subscriber to the Times-Union. As much as I hate to defend Baptists, I'll be removing all but the Muhammed controversy, which was national, if no one fixes this.--Cúchullain t/c 18:56, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Attendance vs. membership[edit]

All attendance numbers need reliable sources. I've found some from the Florida Times-Union; though they're a few years old, they're not likely to be too far off the mark. One of the sources specifically speaks about the difference between registered members and the actual attendance, a distinction pastor Brunson himself is clear on. In the infobox I went with the number given in the more recent source specifically for weekly attendance, which it put at 7500.--Cúchullain t/c 16:04, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I misread the source; the 7,500 figure is for Sundays. The distinction is important because there are also Wednesday services (though many of the attendants probably go to both.) At any rate we need to go with what the sources say.--Cúchullain t/c 16:09, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Same-sex marriage[edit]
