Love and Human Remains[edit]

Hi there...just to let you know, I put the film version into a separate article from the stage play, because the title was filing wrong at Category:Canadian films. The problem was that category links don't work the same as regular wikilinks; piping alternate text in the link doesn't change how the title appears on the category page. It only changes where the title appears alphabetically, so all the pipetext did was put Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love, unchanged, under L instead of U. You should only use pipe text in cases such as The L Word, where you want the existing title filed under L instead of T; in cases like this one, piping just can't do what you need it to. No biggie; it took me a while to understand it myself! Bearcat 00:38, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Trinidad Geography[edit]

Can you explain the basis for your statement Although it is located just off-shore from South America, Trinidad and Tobago is considered part of the North American continent.

Thanks. Guettarda 00:58, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I realise that the Caribbean is often lumped with NAmerica (since you can't exactly call it a continent of its own) but given that it sits on its own plate I can't see it being called part of the "continent"...any part of the continent should sit on the continent's plate(s). In addition, Trinidad sits on the edge of the South American plate - recent geological work suggests that the plate runs through the middle of Trinidad. Seems prety iffy to me. Guettarda 01:12, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'm not saying your statement is wrong - I am saying I don't find it terribly satisfying - very different things. Iceland is politically part of Europe - continentally, well - people have the need to lump everything into a continent sometimes (hence the Caribbean in NAmerica). Hawai'i in North America - well that just seems wrong to me...and if Hawai'i, why not Guam (ok, so Guam isn't a state while HI is). I need to find out if there is an objective definition of a continent...though, of course, Europe fits no geological definition of a continent, only a historical one... Enterprise VfD[edit]

Thanks for the warning! I'm a little saddned by this trend. I'll see if I can do anything to avert the TNG VfDs. I've seen similiar things before for other series, but in the cases that I am familiar with, the votes for deletion failed. I saw Jimbo himself explicitly saying on the meta wikimedia that episode articles are acceptable, so I don't know why people keep trying to pick on episode articles. All I can say for myself is that if someone decides to delete my work (that I've spent a-many hours on), wikipedia is going to loose a contributor. Again, thanks for the important news! KJen74 05:25, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

It's me again. I just looked through the TNG votes for deletion, and it looks like there are enough people who are voting to Keep the articles, which is encouraging news for ENTERPRISE articles. I guess I was off a little bit earlier about Jimbo explicitly saying that episode articles are acceptable... instead he said "I agree with this one completely" to this statement:
"Why shouldn't there be a page for every Simpsons character, and even a table listing every episode, all neatly crosslinked and introduced by a shorter central page like the above? Why shouldn't every episode name in the list link to a separate page for each of those episodes, with links to reviews and trivia?" I don't see why Trek would be any different from the Simpsons.
Anyway, that's about all I want to express on VfDs. Hope you're enjoying the holidays! KJen74 05:48, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sci-fi[edit]

At Sci-fi, you added the following text: "It is rejected by some linguists as a "slang" term." I have a problem with that edit. Linguists study language and catalog what they find. They do not reject any word that people actually use. People who reject words that people actually use are considered prescriptive gramarians -- a controversial bunch -- not linguists. Even such gramarians don't actually "reject" slang in the same way they reject the word "ain't"; they mostly just say that slang should not be used in formal contexts. What are you trying to get at with this edit? Vadder 05:44, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

23skidoo[edit]

Are you this 23skidoo? Your user info's have you living in different places, but that may just be something you forgot to update. 23Skidoo doesn't seem that common a username, unless I'm missing some obvious-to-everyone-but-me reference. Very disorienting to have your web-hangouts entwined with eachother like that. --fvw* 04:37, 2005 Jan 7 (UTC)

Ahh, interesting. You learn something new every day (though this was pretty much on the threshhold, good night!) --fvw* 06:06, 2005 Jan 7 (UTC)

Catacombs and Dogma Affair[edit]

The only source I have for the book is that it was the only Man from UNCLE book I ever owned. I've held it in my hands, but I can't find a reference to it anywhere either. I'm certain the title is right. I think the villain is called Sol Erosion or someting real similar... so if you know of a book with that character, it might be the same one, retitled. You can safely leave it in the list, because it definitely exists. Pedant 19:18, 2005 Jan 7 (UTC)

The book was published very soon after the series began, definitely before 1975 (I enlisted in the Navy then and am sure I had the book before that) The items in the Reagan library include a shoe-phone from Get Smart and if I remeber correctly a com pen from Man from UNCLE. They were a part of a display about spys and spying that included (in a separate case) encryption machines, spy cameras, and the like. There was also information in the (what I'll call fictional spy section) on the shows I Spy, Man from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart, and it seems there were 2 or 3 other shows from that era that were 'spy related'. I'm not certain what else was included, but Smart's shoe phone was definitely included. There was also a picture of the Chief and Smart getting ready to use the Cone of Silence. I'm sure the archivist of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library would be glad to give you more information. Their web page is http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/index.html but it's pretty 'under construction' for a presidential library page...
The collection seems to have been on loan: https://www.cia.gov/csi/exhibits/SalvettiRemarks.htm mentions: "I also want to thank Danny Biederman, who has loaned to the Library for this exhibit some of his collection of Hollywood spy memorabilia. Hollywood has long been fascinated with the world of espionage, and, of course, most of its portrayals of the intelligence business are pure fantasy." so you might need to eventually contact Danny Biederman for more info.
The URL: https://www.cia.gov/csi/exhibits/ReaganSpiesExhibit.htm includes this mention:

"Fourth Gallery

As a contrast with the real story of espionage, examples of Hollywood’s version of secret agent tools are displayed in the fourth gallery in an entertaining look at how Hollywood viewed the world of intelligence during the Cold War. On loan from the Spy-Fi Archives of Hollywood Screenwriter Danny Biederman, after previously being displayed at CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia in 2000, are:

  • Maxwell Smart’s shoe phone from Get Smart.
  • The pen communicator from the Man From U.N.C.L.E.
  • Mrs. Peel’s leather pants from The Avengers.

Lloyd Salvetti, Director of the Center for the Study of Intelligence represented DCI George Tenet at the exhibit opening Saturday, 16 February 2002. In his keynote speech, Mr. Salvetti said, “…the examples of tradecraft displayed here are only some of the tools of our trade. What is more important to remember is that the CIA and the rest of the Intelligence Community exist to give accurate, timely and comprehensive intelligence to the President of the United States and to his national security team so that they can deal with threats to our nation’s security and to its values.” He observed that President Reagan “was a voracious consumer of intelligence. He set aside 30 minutes every day, from 0930 to 1000, for a national security briefing. At the end of each session, the President received a maroon, leather-bound book with the President’s Daily Brief, or PDB, in it.” For this exhibit, the PDB staff agreed to loan one of the blue leather binders it prepares for President Bush six days a week. The fact of the existence of the PDB was classified until the early 1990s. This exhibit provides the visitor with a rare glimpse of this unique item, the contents of which, of course, had to remain in the vault at CIA Headquarters.

The collaboration between the Presidential Libraries and the CIA Museum/Center for the Study of Intelligence is an initiative to share with the American people the pride we in the Central Intelligence Agency have for the role intelligence plays in helping the President achieve his national security objectives, and to impart a better understanding of the craft of intelligence. The exhibit will be at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum in Simi Valley, California through 14 July 2002. "

Hope this helps slake your curiosity a bit.. cheers! Pedant 22:14, 2005 Jan 8 (UTC)

Dear 23skidoo[edit]

(please refer to delete votes)

    • Dear Wiki contributors, admins & sysops. You have been mislead by Curps. Please see that article in question and decide for yourselves if deletion is a correct Wiki thing to do. I have decided not to pursue the re-naming of Curps's article 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and through consultation with other helpful Wikis, I have decided to start a series of Asian Tsunami articles on my own ... there is freedom to initiate such a move right ? The articles in questions is proposed to drill deep in the subject in question. In Asian tsunami : The earthquake I have attempted to focus just on the earthquake that caused the Asian Tsunamis. In Asian tsunami : Time-line (currently vandalised by Curps), I have drilled down to the exact minutes to minutes account of the waves of deadly tsunamis. I will be added other article in the Asian tsunami series like the humanitarian aspects, current news & occurrences etc. because I think it is the right thing to do. kenkam 06:55, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Norwegian pink-nippled Eskimo bat[edit]

Here's the text of the article, as requested. As stupid articles go, it's a fairly funny one. Andrew Lenahan - Starblind 12:24, Jan 14, 2005 (UTC)

-=@=-

A Norwegian pink-nippled Eskimo bat is a species of bat located in arctic ice caves. It drills holes in the ice with large pink nipples for incubation of its young. It's one of few arctic living mamals. The Norwegian pink-nippled Eskimo bat was first observed by Sir Walter James Mondoyle.

(Physical Characteristics) The bat is approximately 10 centimeters to 14 centimeters in height. It is entirely white save for its pink nipples.

(Mating Habits) ...insert pictures...

(Burrowing techniques) The pink-nippled creature inserts warmed pink nipples into cave walls within inhabited caves.

Michael Vaughn actually was born in France, according to his official profile:[1]. Still, thanks for updating his bio. I'd been meaning to do that. Oh, and you might want to archive some of this page. -LtNOWIS 00:06, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Enterprise[edit]

Yeah, I don't care for the show, but I wouldn't exactly call them "Pro-Enterprise" websites anyway. Their notable (at least for Ext links) fan sites and should be listed. You've also got some of the bad and a good section on the criticisms of the show so it's not like the article is POV. I'll keep an eye on it. K1Bond007 20:08, Feb 6, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. My sis runs a website for the lead, so I'm pretty wired into the whole fandom thing; clearly (to me, at least) the fat lady has *not* performed her musical number, as yet. --Baylink 14:26, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

AllyUnion appears to be our angel; I've also expanded the explanation... though the anon may not know enough to look at the talk page. --Baylink 03:51, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Read the rumors for the final episode. I read it and laughed. On paper it sounds utterly ridiculous. Thank God, I wasn't a fan of the show otherwise I'd be pissy too. I say "on paper" for obvious reasons. K1Bond007 01:27, Mar 20, 2005 (UTC)

Alexa[edit]

It might be organized by subject. Thats usually how Alexa works. Btw, it might be time for you to archive some of your discussion page. You're at 44K. K1Bond007 05:42, Feb 9, 2005 (UTC)

You can delete whatever you want on your user page and discussion page, it is your page afterall, but it's a more common practice to archive it. Simply goto User:23skidoo/Archive1 or whatever and just create a page as you normally would and copy and paste things over. I made a little table at the top of mine. You don't have to do this, it really doesn't matter - you can copy my table if you want and change things for you. I don't care, I copied the idea from someone else anyway :) K1Bond007 05:55, Feb 9, 2005 (UTC)

Mr. Do![edit]

Take a look at Mr. Do and Mr. Do! and see if I've merged enough. If I have, it's probably best if we just make Mr. Do into a redirect since the correct spelling is Mr. Do! Mr. Do! was better written than mine anyway :)--Woohookitty 18:18, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

===James Bond FAC===[edit]

Hello. I have just nominated James Bond to become a featured article. I thought I'd let you know because you are very active on that article. Phils 11:48, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Re: Anon "Save Enterprise" vandal[edit]

Oh, you're entirely welcome; and I too sympathize. I still hope Sci-Fi (and in turn Space) picks it up, even though that's an awfully outside chance. With Enterprise gone and (it seems) Dead Like Me about to be declared deceased, I'm doubly grateful for the "reimaged" Battlestar Galactica. If however this trend continues, I'll soon lack a reason to turn on my TV at all. Oh and well; more time for wiki I suppose. ;) -- Hadal 04:02, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Oh, yes I did catch it; although I'm a bit spoiled in that I get UPN, CityTV (and a timeshifted east coast affiliate), and Space, which means I don't have to put up with UPN's commercials, and I get to catch a rerun at 8PM on Sunday if I so choose. This satellite package is a bit overkill for my habits, but it can't be scaled back as I'm not the only who watches this TV.
I have no reason to doubt your analysis of the upcoming episodes; although I could have done without the Biblical quote as an episode title so soon after it was used in ST: Nemesis (this is a petty nitpick, I know). "The Aenar" was one of the best conclusive episodes I've seen in a Trek story arc. That shot of the NX-01 entering orbit over Andoria was beautiful, and the iceworms were a nice touch. The cynics might have trouble picking holes in this one. If there's to be a sixth series (or seventh if you count the animated series), I hope Coto and/or Moore are involved.
It's a pity you haven't convenient access to BSG, but you're right; there's no hurry. If you liked the miniseries you'll love the series—and about half of its cast (including the best of them, IMO) is Canadian, including the Albertan Tricia Helfer (but you probably already knew that). Good stuff. -- Hadal 06:39, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

James Bond[edit]

Hi, In continuing my discussion with K1Bond007 regarding the films table I encountered an edit conflict with you and ironically I was suggesting the same as you: a short biographical page linked to two separate pages: James Bond books and James Bond in film. That would solve the size issue and would definitely have my support. Mark 22:09, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

ITV category[edit]

I'm questioning the duplication of ITV and British, since ITV is a subcat of British - that leads to a double listing in the same group of categories, which defeats one of the purposes of a subcat - to reduce clutter in the main category. I'd say keep the ITV category subcat and remove the British television shows category, since that's the superset. --khaosworks 19:35, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Star Trek... not a featured article[edit]

I feel that the Star Trek article is no longer a featured article and should be nominated at Wikipedia:Featured article removal candidates. Sadly, it seems that the Star Trek article has been stripped of its status, and the article has been peeled away to something not a Featured Article no longer. I don't have the heart to nominate it as a removal candidate and I would like your thoughts on the matter. -- AllyUnion (talk) 08:54, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Star Trek featured article[edit]

I'm puzzled as to why you would think the Star Trek article no longer qualifies as a featured article. Except for some trims here and there and some expansion to the "future of the franchise" section that was inevitable given the Enterprise situation, I haven't seen the article undergo any substantial changes since I began my involvement with Wikipedia last fall. What has happened to make you decide it no longer qualifies? If there's an issue involving content, format, etc. I think we (as in the regular editors of the article) should work to resolve these problems before going this route. I just went through a very unpleasant experience (which nearly soured me on Wikipedia altogether) with the fine-tooth-combing and rejection of James Bond as a feature article, so I know these things are hard as hell to get. If you'd rather not discuss in an open forum, feel free to use the "E-mail this user" feature and contact me directly that way. Cheers. 23skidoo 15:49, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Let us review the points of the featured article candidates list.
  1. Be comprehensive, factually accurate, stable, and well-written
    1. Comprehensive? No. Missing topics like Star Trek versus Star Wars, complaints about Star Trek, complaints about the franchise after Gene's death, writers inconsistancies, etc.
    2. Accurate? For the most part, yes.
    3. Stable? No, not completely
    4. Well-written, not completely
  2. Be uncontroversial
    Argument over Voyager POV.
  3. Images
We have them, but I would like to restore an image per section, at least per series.
  4. Headings
Need reorganization, the new material doesn't necessary fit into everything.
  5. References
We are missing book references that could be used to back the article. Gene Roddenberry's biography, information from the cast, writers, stuff that has been written in books, newspapers.
-- AllyUnion (talk) 03:11, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Mary Poppins[edit]

During the "Jolly Holiday" sequence, one of the singing animals was voiced by Marni Nixon, who ironically also provided the singing voice for Audrey Hepburn's Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady - the film that Julie Andrews was not allowed to make, causing much controversy at the time (Nixon would later play one of Julie Andrews' fellow nuns in The Sound of Music).

OK, at least I see what you're getting at now—except for the part where it's ironic. Why is it ironic that Marni Nixon participated in a film Julie Andrews couldn't do, when all Nixon did was provide a voice for an animal in Mary Poppins?

I consider it amusing that Nixon had to do the voice for Hepburn on the film version of a musical that Andrews starred in—but not very ironic, and it has nothing to do with Mary Poppins. It's a curious turn of events, for sure, but what's it have to do with the article? It's already in My Fair Lady and Marni Nixon. 82.92.119.11 21:49, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Nixon relegated to a role that's for the birds? :-) Erm, doing backup work was sort of her job—and she was good at it, too. I think you're just pulling completely different things together and claiming "irony!" for no good reason. But on the assumption that I just don't understand what your point is, I'll shrug and leave the issue to greater minds than mine. Cheers yourself! :-) 82.92.119.11 22:07, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Enterprise[edit]

It's ironical, I know. Personally, I think all the links that aren't really "fan sites" should be removed and this includes the petitions. I really disagree with adding those. A fan site should be one that includes information on the show, their episodes, their cast etc an actual fan site, not just some site that says "Kill Enterprise", "Save Enterprise", or etc etc. But thats my opinion. Theres truthfully only two I would consider keeping in that bunch - btw take a look at the talk page for my temp page. K1Bond007 18:29, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

NCAA tournament revert[edit]

Thanks. I looked at the history, and it's pretty obvious that the fellow who vandalized the page was a Kansas fan in denial over the fact that his team lost in the first round. The vandalism involved changing the score from 64-63 Bucknell to 88-20 Kansas, and replacing Bucknell in the second round with Kansas. Another detail that may or may not be coincidental: Kansas' last NCAA tournament win (i.e., winning the national title) was in 1988. Dale Arnett 16:00, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Stub[edit]

  • Wikipedia:Stub - Theres another one I could have used called expansion or something, but I didn't like that it "requests expansion" and how that was written. Also please note, that I'm currently doing work on the JB movie info template and I kinda hit a snag and won't have it fixed till later. Essentially I figured a way to get optional fields in there so now if there isn't anything listed for either Preceded by (Dr. No) or Followed by (Casino Royale 2006) or both (NSNA, CR 1967) then the field isn't visible. This however, when not used (see NSNA) leaves a gap on those 4 pages where it qualifies. Has something to do with them being back to back. If there was a field between them, it'd look fine. I'll fix it eventually. K1Bond007 04:48, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)
Well nevermind about that. Found an easy work around faster than I thought. Should work on all pages. Tell me if you find a problem with it on any page. K1Bond007 02:17, Mar 29, 2005 (UTC)
