"Suggested Changes to the Critical Response Section"[edit]

I suggest a couple of changes to the "Critical Response" section under "Reception".

1. Make it explicitly clear that Ostrov, Gentile and Crick's original study suggests that all T.V. (including "educational" shows) can lead to increased "relational aggression". They only used Arthur as an example of an educational show and certainly don't make a causative statement that Arthur leads to relational aggression in children. The reason for why educational media might lead to relational aggression is also only a hypothesis (not tested in the study) and only applies to young children (4-6 years) who are unable to understand the lesson the show is trying to impart and instead pick up on the behaviours the show is trying to discourage.

2. Completely remove the quote from NurtureShock ("Essentially, Ostrov had just found that Arthur is more dangerous for children than Power Rangers"). I has a brief look at the book's authors (neither of them have a background in child psychology or any scientific field - both of them appear to be pop-science writers) and the Amazon page and it looks like a Gladwell-ian book concerned with creating simple straightforward narrative for popular consumption. This explains the mischaracterization "Essentially, Ostrov had just found that Arthur is more dangerous for children than Power Rangers" which should not be someone's takeaway if you actually read the journal article. The book also states that "educational" media exposure was found to increase physical aggression in a follow up study but the only follow up study I found summarizes that "Results replicate and extend prior research that has demonstrated links between educational media exposure and relational aggression, but not physical aggression, during early childhood." (emphasis mine).
