The distinction made in the introduction, in my opinion, is wrong. A revolutionary is a person who is engaged in a political or social revolution, that is the transformation of society by the masses (the people) examples of revolutions are: The French Revolution and the Russian Revolution. A rebel is a person who is engaged in a rebellion that does not entail the changing of society by the masses, but by a part of the masses (e.g. an oppressed minority). To say that a revolutionary is a successful rebel is total nonsense, in my opinion. I think the introduction to this category should be changed.

Your definition makes a lot more sense, and I'll stick to that. But, let me please say that my idea isn't complete nonsense... Were Washington, Jefferson, and Adams not rebelling against the English throne? There would have been no revolution had they not been successful. Had the English won, they would have said they had suppressed a rebellion, not a revolution. It may not seem nice, you might not like it, but history is written by the victors, to some extent, and this is reflected in the terminology...

First, let me make clear that I did not make the initial comment above. I've always seen revolutionary as a subset of rebel, in that rebels are against authority, while revolutionaries are against authority and want to replace that authority with a completely new system. I have noticed though that there has been a slow motion edit war at rebellion where people remove the American revolutionaries from the list.
