How do Allegro and the Simple DirectMedia Layer library compare?[edit]

--Hirzel 13:50, 14 Sep 2003 (UTC) Excuse my lack of tabbage; I'm still new around these parts. This is commonly disputed. In general SDL is more common in commercial products. That's the bare facts. You really have to look at both and find what you like best. Allegro is more of a game library then anything, while SDL just gives the basics such as keyboard input, timers, imaging, and add on libraries for networking, sound, et cetera. I do not think there should be a section in the article about "Allegro vs. SDL"... The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kanzure (talk • contribs) .

XBOX?[edit]

A recent edit added this: "Allegro has been successfully ported to Xbox, though it cannot be released due to legality reasons."

Anyone has a reference for that, and info by who and in what way it was ported? Else I guess that should be removed or somehow marked as unverified info.. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Allefant (talk • contribs) .

Actually, from what I know it is not completely true. Shawn said that Allegro graphics were working, but not the other elements like sound and timers. [1] [2] Note that it is true the part about legal stuff, you must own the SDK to release it, and could be used only for those who have bought the SDK. He did so to include a copy of a game he wrote with Allegro in Moto GP. He also confirmed that the port is not finished. [3] -- ReyBrujo 04:25, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's just what I thought: "I never properly ported Allegro to Xbox, and never used it for anything" - in light of that, i removed the links to MotoGP games (they are *not* games made with Allegro) and the claim of an XBox port (there is no port, even if it's possible to get some Allegro examples running (without Allegro though)). --Allefant 22:56, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Allegro library or Allegro project[edit]

Um. A google search for "Allegro library" yields 43800 results, and on the first page they all seem to refer to this library. A search for "Allegro project" yields 617 results, and they seem to mostly refer to some other projects (including the #1 hit). I also know that on the mailing list and in forums it is referred to as library, not project - so changed back to the old name for now. --Allefant 00:54, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

3D in DOS[edit]

Maybe it is worth mentionning that Allegro when used together together with Mesa3D make one of the few opensource libraries that still support 3D in DOS, and with the Glide driver Allegro/MesaFX/Glide forms the only hardware accelerated opensource stack for DOS.DrYak 00:10, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is well-known among Swedish sailors that Allegro is a sailboat,not a programming language.
