I believe Ostheim wasn't technically annexed by Bavaria in 1945 as is sometimes reported. At least prior to reunification, it was part of Thuringia but “administered by the Free State of Bavaria”. This was a strange situation since in order to reunify Germany the old states of eastern Germany had to reconstitute themselves in order to join the Bundes Republik Deutschland (West Germany) state by state. In other words between around 1952 and 1990 just prior to formal reunification, I don’t think there was a Thuringia existing in the DDR to which Ostheim could be a part of.

A military history confirmed it being an enclave that was a potential hot spot with Soviets in 1952. I also read it was the only enclave of Thuringia in Bayern.--CSvBibra 05:46, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The change of administration of the church to Baveria is correct but it may have been from Hessen to Bavaria instead of Thuringia to Baveria. The article is easily found in German.--CSvBibra 17:51, 10 April 2007 (UTC) That was my memory and a map confirms the Fulda (Hesse) connection in the German Fulda bishopric site but I found and have linked an article on the Thuringia switch.--CSvBibra 15:37, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Upon further reflection, the issue with Hesse relates to the Catholic Church jurisdiction where the Thuringia issue relates to the Lutheran church.

cultural identity[edit]

Historically Ostheim was part of Saxe-WEimar-Eisenach and Thuringia and came later to Bavaria, but it was and is part of Franconia. Both North-Bavaria and South-Thuringia are franconian. In Ostheim they speak east franconian dialect and have franconian culture. So before 1945 there was a administrative border and also another diocese and established regional church, but not more. In 1945 there were some areas in Germany which came to another occupation zone because the allies didn't want exclaves or areas with complicated borders.
