Representations[edit]

Either we have all the diplomatic representations listed separately, or none. Only listing the US representation is unacceptable. I think we should not list any (have removed it for now), because IMHO this isn't encyclopedia contents. Kokiri 12:07, 2 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Good idea, it was part of the factbook import. -- User:Docu

Page name[edit]

Why isn't this page named "Foreign relations of Switzerland", in accordance with the Countries Project template? --Shallot 16:42, 4 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if the template defines an article on that topic. The Factbook import that's here was initially split between a page with that name and "Politics of". -- User:Docu
I agree that this page should be moved in order to remain consistent with the other articles on foreign relations. See Category:Foreign relations by country. — Ливай | 00:18, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This article has been renamed as the result of a move request. violet/riga (t) 12:49, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Neutrality/International Disputes[edit]

I think some mention should be made of Switzerland's choice of supporting the People's Republic of China in its "One China" policy as stated here: http://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/home/reps/asia/vchn/bilchi/biltai.html
http://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/home/reps/asia/vchn/bilchi.html
I wouldn't like to edit an article like this without saying something here first.--翔太 「Shouta:talk」 23:52, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why were the people so opposed to joining the UN[edit]

Could someone please add to the article why the people of Switzerland were so opposed to joining the UN that it failed the first referendum and only barely passed the second one? I get the neutrality thing, but in the most recent vote almost every other country was already a member, even many countries that are enemies with each other. --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 03:29, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly, even countries that were enemies with each other were members. Because each vote at the UN, or the even more powerful vote on the Security Council, is establishing a side, a point of view, an action against someone else.

Swiss neutrality is one of its greatest assets and powers. As small as it may seem, Switzerland voting against or for another nation holds them somewhat responsible for an active measure against another nation, something their entire nation is against. This is not a passive "I feel that you shouldn't be doing that, in fact I don't like it, but I won't stop you as its not our business", this is a "I don't like what you're doing, im going to decide that these people should go in and stop you". The people were fearful, and rightly so given their history on the matter, that their neutrality would be compromised, even slowly destroyed, because of an active or even unintentional choice of sides that would bring repercutions against Switzerland.

Somewhat like nations, ill use the USA as a rough example here, with a deeply ingrained freedom of speech. Even the slightest change that the majority may agree with at the time, hold a terrible consequence of setting a future precedent or unintentional destruction of freedom of speech for things that are against the peoples wishes of that and/or a later time even. If such a right or "freedom" is strongly and deeply ingrained in an entire nations population, they will be wary of any challenge that makes their freedom have a chance to fade. 124.182.143.128 (talk) 02:39, 15 February 2009 (UTC) Harlequin[reply]

International disputes[edit]

Switzerland has no international disputes is wishful thinking. To begin with, why is there no mention of Libya? — Emil J. 14:44, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in Foreign relations of Switzerland[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Foreign relations of Switzerland's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "LT2015":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 22:56, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hatnote[edit]

As my reversion of the addition of {{for}} has itself been reverted by ZH8000, I figure I should bring the matter here for discussion. In his or her edit summary, ZH8000 wrote, "well, please be at least so kind to let us know why." I had thought that my edit summary – "Rv per WP:RELATED" – was pretty clear, but I'm happy to elucidate if need be. The editing guideline on hatnotes states:

Disambiguation hatnotes are intended to link to separate topics that could be referred to by the same title. They are not intended to link to topics that are simply related to each other, or to a specific aspect of a general topic

While Swiss neutrality has been a key component of Switzerland's foreign policy, it is but one concept that would fall within the scope of this article. I am unsure as to how ZH8000 is unclear about the applicability of the guideline. Perhaps you could clarify, ZH8000?

Lastly, ZH8000, merely reverting the addition of a new hatnote most certainly does not constitute an "edit war", so I am wondering why you transcluded {{uw-3rr}} on my talk page. In particular, it seems ironic that you would be advising me to observe WP:BRD when you did not instigate a discussion following my reversion of your bold addition of a new hatnote. And I should note that adding {{uw-editsummary}} when it's been a day since an edit summary on the article was omitted (my bad there, of course) and when both of us have since edited the article multiple times just comes across as petty. 142.160.131.202 (talk) 21:28, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
