Leung is Scottish[edit]

Some editors are changing Leung to being described as a British actress instead of Scottish. There are a few reasons Scottish is best. First, a search through news items inevitably describes Leung as "Scottish Actress". I've yet to see here described as "British". Second, "Scottish" implies "British", which is not the case of the reverse. The lead should be as succinct and accurate as possible. BashBrannigan (talk) 02:32, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was already decided per consensus and UK nationals guidelines that Scottish was fine, and also that her Chinese Ancestry has no part to play as well. Oh, she is British in a sense, a British citizen. No worries. --85.211.123.2 (talk) 05:36, 6 May 2011 (UTC) me forgetting to sign in - And oh, she self-identifies as Scottish which is sourced in the article too, news sources and websites describing her as Scottish have nothing on that, if she described herself as British then she would be British and not Scottish, regardless of what a few news sources say, for instance. --Τασουλα (Shalom!) (talk) 05:41, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

She is a citizen of Scotland but she is not Ethnic Scottish. I think this is where the confusion lies at, and really, if you are born in China you may be "chinese" but you are not automatically Han-Chinese. British is better to describe her as its more neutral. 107.222.205.242 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 03:48, 20 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can we perhaps add some? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.139.199.17 (talk) 19:28, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnicity ≠ Nationality[edit]

So we have an edit-warring IP that is attempting to change the nationality of this actress in the article. Let me simply quote what Τασουλα said in the topic above: "It was already decided per consensus and UK nationals guidelines that Scottish was fine, and also that her Chinese Ancestry has no part to play as well." (emphasis mine)

IOW, Ethnicity ≠ Nationality. Her ethnicity is already covered in the 'Early life' section. Regardless her nationality is Scottish – quoting Τασουλα from above again: "And oh, she self-identifies as Scottish which is sourced in the article too..." Therefore, this "Chinese-Scottish" business needs to be kept out of the lede and infobox. --IJBall (contribstalk) 19:02, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I can only add that I agree with the existing WP:CONSENSUS. The IP hopping editor can take this up at various policy talk pages if the wish to try and change existing guidelines. The edit warring at numerous articles is not the way to go about getting p&g changed. MarnetteD|Talk
A different IP is making the same edits. So now we have not only edit-warring, but sockpuppetry. --Ebyabe talk - Union of Opposites ‖ 18:49, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well i originally edited it to say "Katie Leung is a Chinese/Scottish actress" but then accidentally added her nationality now i want to put it back to what it originally said. Along with the categories

Just popping in to note that I made the changes in compliance with WP:BLPCAT and WP:EGRS. As noted by others, nationality is included in the lead of biography articles, not descent. Those wishing to include additional ethnicities/descent to the body of the article and its categories will need to meet the burden of proof for their inclusion.--Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 22:20, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

IP you need to take a look at the thread just above this. You will need to get a change to the current consensus to make the changes that you have proposed. MarnetteD|Talk 15:23, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And what is it that i need to change exactly? If i knew then i wouldn't ask this question. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.106.30.36 (talk) 16:56, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

YES I DID!!!!!!! IM THAT EDITOR!!!! AND NOTHING YOU SAY OR DO WILL CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT THAT EDIT!!! Your shouting means that you might have read the policy but you certainly don't understand it. The one thing "we" aren't going to do is change the edit in question. So here is a new one to help explain further - please try reading WP:IDONTLIKEIT. MarnetteD|Talk 20:17, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Since nationality, not ethnicity, is what goes in lead intro sentence, and she is not a Chinese national, you are adding false bio info. Pretty much everyone who understands the Wikipedia manual of style should and will reject the addition of false bio info. Geraldo Perez (talk) 18:59, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I will handle this review. Should be a quick one. An anonymous username, not my real name (talk) 00:59, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Early life[edit]

  • The source says she is "often pegged as a born-and-bred Motherwell girl", while the article makes a firmer statement of "Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, is often misidentified as her birthplace because she spent most of her childhood there". Since the source's initial statement is vague, maybe remove this part and focus on the various places she lived during childhood.

Career[edit]

  • Leung's voice was used in the video games Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. This uncited, undated statement, which is also its own paragraph, is rather jarring when reading through.
  • However, after attending a drama course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, she was inspired. This sentence feels fragmentary, as though it was cut off midway.
  • an undocumented Chinese immigrant who sells pirate DVDs and stolen phones on the streets of Brixton in the hope of making a life for herself in the UK, but who first must pay her debts to the Snakeheads who smuggled her into Britain. Almost no paraphrasing from original source.
  • Leung next appeared in an episode of the BBC crime drama series Father Brown. This statement is unsourced.
  • In June 2021, Leung narrated the short audio story Off Course for Bibliophone. The story was the winner of a charity writing competition which raised money for the Scottish Refugee Council. Citation needed.

Personal life[edit]

  • The phrase "combat blindness" could come across as strange. What the article being loosely paraphrased says is "Sightsavers International works in over 30 countries across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean to treat and prevent avoidable blindness and to also improve life for those who are irreversibly blind".
  • She speaks fluent Cantonese and some Mandarin. Mandarin is not mentioned in the article this sentence cites.

Awards[edit]

  • This should be a table, as is standard.

Mostly good, but there are some issues that definitely must be addressed. I'm putting it on hold. I will always be available if needed. An anonymous username, not my real name (talk) 01:29, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you immensely for taking the time to look this article over. I have adjusted the wording in the places you noted, removed the unsourced / uncited material that you pointed out, and placed Ms. Leung's awards and nominations in a table format. Please let me know if there are any further adjustments that are required for Good Article status. Moloch Dhalgren (talk) 01:10, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are most welcome. That should be all the article needs to meet GA criteria (no other copyright violations, stable, good images, broad in coverage, etc.), so I will pass it now. An anonymous username, not my real name (talk) 04:51, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Citation 12[edit]

Hello @Moloch Dhalgren: I can't seem to verify your claim for what citation 12 verifies. There is verification that a hate website was made against her but it doesn't say that it was from jealousy due to the romance between cho and harry. Could your provide a way to verify that? Onegreatjoke (talk) 00:06, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out; I'll take a look. That citation predates when I began editing the article, so I will change the wording there for any part of the statement that I am unable to source. Moloch Dhalgren (talk) 10:07, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

She is British why does it describe her as Scottish[edit]

Scottish is an ethnicity (also as per the wiki on Scottish people btw).

She is a British actress. 23.186.80.194 (talk) 22:31, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The different parts of the United Kingdom are considered partially autonomous. Therefore, it is common practice for articles about people on Wikipedia to describe them as being from a particular part of Britain, rather than just "British". To use other actors' pages as examples:
Therefore, although Katie Leung can be considered both "Scottish" and "British", she is considered Scottish first and foremost on Wikipedia.
(Sidenote: this practice will also have been a useful precaution in the [however unlikely] event of the UK dissolving and splitting into separate countries. This way, Wikipedia editors won't have to change the nationality of every single British person who has their own article, should that event ever occur.)
