No: record companies are the "real" entities, record labels are only brands created by record companies. In the distant past, there used to be a correspondence between companies and labels, now labels are in most cases just branding tools for a few large multinational companies. -- Anon.

true, part of the time, but not always. Independent labels for example are not owned by a larger company - but are still called "labels".
