In 1825 Pushkin's friend, Vyrazemski, had lost a son and was seriously ill. So to cheer him up Pushkin copied out Chapter Two with a letter explaining he had never before copied out anything. As a nice turn around in Chapter Seven Vyrazemski appears and cheers up Tanya.
