Sink Hole[edit]

The whole sinkhole story seems really out of place. What are the arguements for retaining it? I can understand a sentence, but to devote a whole paragraph to an episode that occured 5 years ago seems odd. Maybe append it to Hickory's history or something? Just curious: any other thoughts? --Derek 18:17, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I asked the same question in an edit summary[1] a while back, then forgot about it until I saw your comment on my watchlist. I recommend ditching it, especially since there are no references cited to support it. (Even if there were, it would only merit a sentence at most). --A. B. 20:52, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed you removed it: Looks much better! --Derek 20:17, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Residents[edit]

I'm not sure how notable some of these residents really are, but I cleaned up the section and put it together as a list. The only ones I removed from the original paragraph were vague references to famous relatives without the actual resident's name. --Derek 19:10, 4 May 2007 (UT)

  • I thought it was downright hilarious that a recent malicious poster to "Notable Residents" can't even spell the name of his/her high school correctly! Good work, Class of 2008! ++Malco23 02:31, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
-- Hickory High School's Class of 2008
    • It's somewhat amazing the number of folks who think adding their name or their friends' names to this list makes them notable. It's tempting to remove the list altogether in order to stop encouraging them. Although, in the spirit of things, I have one to add: "Malco23 - dutifully removing Hickory non-notables". :-) --Derek 17:22, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just doin' my part! I agree that the 'Notable Residents' category seems to be a magnet for misuse. I'm going to check t some entries for similar size cities and see if they even include this. Malco23 16:51, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Jon Reep is NOT from Hickory. He originally said he was from Vale but now says he is from Hickory. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.162.57.203 (talk) 08:22, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Considering that Vale is an unincorporated municipality this is understandable. Many people from many of the smaller towns around Hickory will say that they are from the Hickory area so that people from other parts of the state and country might understand where they are from. It's all part of the Hickory metropolitan region anyway. 199.90.28.195 (talk) 14:43, 19 March 2010 (UTC) (a resident of the town of Longview who generally claims to be from Hickory)[reply]
  • Should some of our Hollywood actors, e.g. David Sherrill, Stacey Ray, and Dan (Schott) Bardol be added? These people have had credited roles in major motion pictures and network television series. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.224.86.243 (talk) 11:13, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Economy Section[edit]

The entire economy section seems like one long commercial. Anyone familiar with the area want to take a crack at fixing it (with sources)? ++Arx Fortis 03:31, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I took the leap and removed all the company names. This section was turning into a Yellow Pages entry and it just invites abuse. Malco23 (talk) 14:12, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, there's not that much furniture that is actually made in Hickory anymore. Most is made in China and shipped to the area furniture stores. Hickory is home to a lot of furniture retailers but very few manufacturers. Please correct this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.162.57.203 (talk) 08:25, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Collins link[edit]

The link to football player Mike Collins goes to a comic book writer. I tried to find the appropriate link, but couldn't. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Omarcheeseboro (talkcontribs) 16:30, August 27, 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Hkylogopf2.png[edit]

Image:Hkylogopf2.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Pronunciation?[edit]

I'm curious as to the predominant pronunciation of the town's name. The "Yankee" way would seem to be "hick-or-ee" or "hick-er-ee", whereas I expcect the local pronunciation would be more like "hick-ree". Does anyone know? Thank you! ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:21, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly it doesn't matter. I've lived here 27 years and people say it both ways. 67.76.104.172 (talk) 02:57, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

All three variations you listed are present along with "hick-o-ree". The "native" pronunciation is probably closer to "hick-ree" for the city and "hick-o-ree" for the tree, but all variations are pretty well attested. --Khajidha (talk) 18:39, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hickory Speedway[edit]

This facility hosted many NASCAR races in the early days. Does this merit mention under sports? Modor (talk) 02:00, 29 January 2013 (UTC)Modor[reply]
