I actually tested this. I created User:Aranel/test1, moved it to User:Aranel/test2, and then moved it back. The move back shows up as "(New) User:Aranel/test2 (User:Aranel/test2 moved to User:Aranel/test1)" even though that was not the edit that created it. Chinatown

I've noticed that you've done a few edits recently on the Chinatown article, and I would like your comments, suggestions, etc. I stumbled upon the whole range of Chinatown articles, including Chinatowns in North America, because I have been doing some editing of some of the Los Angeles area communities, including the ethnic communities of Chinatown, Los Angeles, California and Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, California. I then went up the hierarchy of articles to see how the ethnic communities were being done in other large cities. When I've looked at the various Chinatown articles, they have driven me crazy because they are filled with spelling and grammar errors, they are poorly organized and have information that is repeated both within and between articles, there is some heavy POV throughout the articles, etc. It's such a big mess that I haven't even tried to do anything other than simple spell-checking.

What is really needed in my opinion is probably a Chinatown Wikiproject to get all the contributors to start working together. The top level Chinatown article, for a start, needs to be severely edited to slash out all the detail that should be in the lower level articles, and then rebuilt so that it provides a much better overview. Even the next level articles such as "Chinatown in North America" article deserves some heavy pruning, again moving the details down to the community articles, along with the creation of a bunch of new Chinatown community articles such as Chinatown, Monterey Park, California. gK ¿? 01:20, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'm still not sure why it is relevant to mention the Jewish background of certain neocons, you argue that you recognize their intellectual style, although I'm not sure what that is, flawed reasoning, emphasis on some values over others? If their jewish background is being emphasized in public discourse, perhaps it has to be discussed. Vendee

Hey, Jmabel.

i understand that my small edit to the page "revolt in the vendee" can be easily mistaken as a POV, and in reading it, i did in some regards fall into that trap.

the point I was trying to make it that the carnage of the Vendee Genocide is a major contributing factor to the demise of Robespierre and the Jacobite cause. This is not a POV statement, it was blatantly a major reason, especially when you consider the close proximity of the White Terror with the end of the Vendee Revolt.

Thanks, for seeing my error, and I hope to make more lasting and realistic edits and additions to this site in the time i spend here. As a student of History, and (hopefully) a History Major in the next few years at College, its very useful to have Wikipedia as both a sorce of knowlege and a place to apply knowlege.

Systemic bias

Great re-write! However, as a researcher, your example of the thermometer is not actually accurate. Systemic bias is exclusive to cognitive situations. The thermometer suffers from calibration error, while bias is a random error based on personal history/experience/loyalty whatever. For example, USA thermometers which always read five degrees colder in Canada, because they expect Canada to be colder, but read correctly in Texas (and at least one degree cooler in New Mexico, 'cuz Texas is hotter than New Mexico right?)

I approve of your cleaning up of my edit on Kennedy’s view on abortion, nice work. Forgive me if my original edit seemed a bit like a cheap shot to Kennedy instead of stating facts, but I guess I have a hard time believing that someone would switch so drastically on views with something like abortion, for anything other than a political gain. I guess what I mean to say is that he did'nt change for anything other than trying to get votes, but was stated poorly by me, thanks.

Joe, (is it joe? I'm inferring...), you're welcome. Chappaquiddick ignorance is one of my pet peeves, and there are no books written by pro-Ted crackpots, so the ignorance is all negative info. I have yet to see anyone assail Ted on Chappaquiddick who even knows he nearly drowned trying to get Mary Jo out. Their attitude hasn't seemed to change since the first presumptive rumors in 1969 (the one thing we learn from the Time articles is that there's nothing new in the technology of TK-bashing since then). As for Lokifer, I think he's not all that bad; at least he's doing due diligence; but he's not really understanding everything he's reading. If it was unambiguously 6 feet, I'd be the first one to include it; but it's unambiguously not 6 feet now, so no way will I let it stand. I really am seriously considering pushing the whole thing to a standalone page and cleaning up everywhere Ted and Mary Jo are mentioned, because neither of them deserves full-frontal crackpottery and it's clear the trolls need a place to vent, so we might as well label it that. Stubs

I'm sorry if I was hasty with Abraham, but I was going through the people stubs trying to get rid of those that had obviously been expanded without the notice being removed. The definition of a stub is fairly clear, and I only removed the notices from the ones that I thought really didn't comply. Lots of the articles marked as stubs can still be expanded on, but that doesn't in itself make them stubs. My main aim was to thin out the list a bit, so that people didn't waste time on articles that were already good, rather than fleshing out the one-liners. Sorry again. Deb 18:26, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

He did name me, in big letters. He titled his comment "Stuff added by Decius", then wrote his comments underneath. The original title of his comment is shown in the history of the discussion page. Anyway, it's alright, I just wanted to identify the actual user who added that paragraph, but I couldn't access that myself. Re: History of Chile

I added the link solely as a reference, so users know that it's not just made up, which is a lot of people's problems with wikis. I know for certain that references are considered quite valuable in an article: FACs are often turned down due to lack of references. I adding it there because an anonymous user changed a few of the dates on that page, and it looked like it was false information. I did a web search for both dates, and to be honest, I just picked out the first one I saw, so if you have a better reference, please feel free to replace mine with that one! That site doesn't look like the most authoritative, so I'm sure there's some way better ones. Please note that I'm not trying to direct users to that page, but if they want to double-check what Wikipedia's saying, they don't have to do too much dirty work. It also gives Wikipedia more validity if it's referenced.

If you've read and understood my point, and you still think it should be removed, it's your call, seeing as this is a wiki. That being said, I really appreciate that you were reluctant to remove it against my will :)

A "more accurate" description of Strauss

I'm not sure accuracy about facts is the goal of that paragraph, which is about how MacDonald "describes" Strauss and the movement. Your phrase is probably a more accurate depiction of the facts being imbued with so much meaning by MacDonald, but they are a response to MacDonald's description. When reporting a published POV such a MacDonald's, how he describes it should be retained and perhaps the actual facts which have alternative coincidental meanings reported separately. Perhaps there is language to accomplish this with separate sentences or dependent clauses in the same paragraph.--Silverback 00:54, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

'Reavoitoare' is from 'rauvoitor', which means "someone who wishes ill" or "someone with ill intentions". 'Rau' meaning 'bad', while 'voitor' is from 'voie', 'will'. 'Cu tendinţa reavoitoare' basically means 'with a tendency towards ill-will'. The words look almost unrecognizable in the compound 'reavoitoare', so no wonder you didn't recognize them. Latin Genitives

-ium or -um, which one? is an easy mistake, the Romans not having made it convenient for the rest of us. . . . For the 3d declension the rule in theory is simple, though: if the gen. sing. has the same number of syllables as the nom. sing., the gen. plur. is in -ium; if more, in -um.

Thus: felis, felis, felium; brevis, brevis, brevium — but lex, legis, legum; mulier, mulieris, mulierum.

Princeps, principis is regular, and therefore the gen. pl. is principum. (The confusion arises with many of us — and I admit to having checked before I made the change! — because of the word principium = "beginning", a different word though.)

And then there are the exceptions. . . ! canis, canis, canum; urbs, urbis, urbium — and not a few others, including the whole family of pater, patris, patrum in which there's really a contraction, pater, pat(e)ris, pat(e)rum. Bill 15:42, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Demographics of Seattle

well, now hopefully that demographics part about Seattle is cleared up, which took you three edits to do so, probably the least you can get out of this is a lil proof reading before submitting the changes =)

Anyways good job on actually fixing what the citations were supposed to be and correcting my mistake of combining the percentages; also i had no idea it was supposed to be left blank and wiki will number it automatically.

Lacas/Locas

Lacas or Locas has more than one meaning: it basically means 'locus' (place). In religious use, it can mean 'a holy place, church, monastery, shrine'; secularly, it can be applied to about any specific place. In the sentence, you can translate it as 'a shrine of culture' or 'a mecca of culture' , 'a center of culture', or you could use another term. Decius 03:55, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Jmabel- Thank you for the link regarding Ranamin and the troubles that he has caused on Wiki. I ran up against him in the Ohio Wesleyan article and found him totally out of touch with reality. I traced him to two Cornell University IP addresses, and two wiki-names. He demonstrated a very hard time being able to seperate what is fact from what was self promotion - all of our exchanges on are the talk pages for user:rananim and Ohio Wesleyan, you can follow the trail from there. BTW, I also think that people at OWU would like to discover who he is because they are not happy with his online behaviors and they are uncomfortable with the idea that he may remerge under another name sometime soon. Hi, there's a new Solution E that's been proposed for the country infoboxes; I've changed my vote from the Solution D that I proposed, earlier. The new option, proposed by User:Zocky, transcludes a subpage instead of using the template mechanism for this.

See: Nepal's infobox is implemented at Nepal/infobox using Template:Infobox_Country; Tuvalu's is implemented at Tuvalu/infobox as a wiki table.

Based on the article text, I assume it's supposed to be "gives a death date of 78 BC, but consensus seems to be 76 BC." But it could be the other way around. Borges and Ukbar

I see you (or someone else?) removed my researched, documented addition to the article, without a word of comment. I spent hours in the library, where I even checked some of the Arabic sources, and fixed it so it would appear with the right diacritics on the webpage. It shows that Ukbar was not simply made up by Borges out of whole cloth, as your otherwise excellent article now states again. So what is going on? Is this vandalism, or an edit war, or something? If someone else did it and you will fix it, you have my apologies. --Chris B

Correct me if I'm wrong; but this is the same gentleman who ten months ago would not stop his edit wars against Tannin and myself; the same person who would re-name articles to ridiculous titles nobody on the planet would expect to find the subject listed under; the same person who kept claiming I was saying things that I'd never said.

The same gentleman whose actions required both Tannin & myself to have to avoid Wikipedia for months to get the bad taste out of our mouths. And no sooner, than I ask for concensus on a discussion page; than this person returns not to discuss, but insult and resume his use of SysOp reverting of anything I've edited.

After all this time.. is there no assistance which the Wikimedia community can offer?

It is not as if anyone needs special knowledge, I have included plenty of supporting documents for any facts which anyone may want to question or dispute; not that he ever disputes anything; he just deletes it, without care or reading it he in seconds reverts over what other people spent hours researching and phasing. Sorry; this was in relation to the West Papua article which got Wik & Johns attention last Apr/May. One of the things they did was move the article from its english title West Papua through a series of titles untill they got to Papua (Indonesian province) (which now has 9 re-directs to it). Well just so long as the original title West Papua still got people to the article I let them have their way with re-naming it.

But the article now says that the current title is incorrect as "Papua (Indonesian province)" only referes to part of the territory in the article. So now there no choice, it has to be returned to something that means "Western Papua".--Daeron 20:57, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I think you are right - I treated the reference as 'further reading' rather than the reference it clearly stated itself to be. Re Anbotoko Mari, I have taken your advice and created Category:Basque myths and legends and removed the see also line. West Papua

I did manage to get around to a serious edit of the page last night, it's there between the reverts; and I thought I'd ask your opinion on this tid bit of history:

1962 was of course not the first time a section of the US govt. had tried to effectively sell West Papua to Indonesia for its 'good will'. In 1957 the a US Ambassador to Indonesia proposed getting Holland to transfer WP to Indo. over a five year period, and to keep the Australians quiet the Indonesians be gotten to sign as members to the ANZUS treaty.

• The response was quick, he was transferred to Prague.
  • I suspect Prague was *not* the top place a US diplomat wanted to be in the mid fifties. ;-)

Hi, I was a bit taken back by tone of response; but not upset. :) The above was a tid-bit; not a write-up. - - actually I'm more concerned that you thought it sounded like an article, but in any event.

Concerning Prague, as it happens my family emigrated from Bohemia to New Zealand in 1862, I'm told my great grandfather was quite happy about Czechoslovakia's formation, and I have no doubts that he's have been over the moon about the Czech Republic. I happen to think the town of Golden-Crown & the surrounding country side is stunningly beautiful, but I may be biased on this :) -- none the less, I suspect the author is correct about it not being a desired post for a US diplomat in the 1950's.

"The West New Guinea Debacle" by CL Penders published 2002; page 294 to 295 Ambassador John Allison; and yes you are correct, what the author actually says is:

"Certainly the State Department had far less confidence in Sukarno's promises and absolutely rejected Allison's plan, transferring him soon after to Prague."

Any Limits on User Page extension

Hi Jmabel, Apologies, I'm trying to figure out the right etiquette here. Just to be clear, I believe I deleted your exchange with 'me'. I was trying to find the best way to respond to your valid point that the link I asked about was inappropriate (I thought it an interesting sign of how the movement's evolving, but in retrospect it was bad judgement on my part). From what I gather, you do some research on Romanian Jews (among other ethnicities). A little known fact (though you might know) is that Stan Lee's parents were Romanian jews (Stan Lee is the co-creator of Spider-Man, the Hulk, etc.). Stan Lee was born Stanley Lieber in Manhattan, but he can be considered a Romanian-American-Jew. I wonder if Stan Lee speaks any Romanian, because his parents almost certainly did.
