First time on TV?[edit]

I'm pretty sure that MT's first TV appearance was a short spot on [Friday Night Live] on Channel 4 in the spring of 1988.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.100.172.147 (talk) 13:09, 5 April, 2007 (UTC)

Political views[edit]

In an interview for the Guardian in 1999, Thomas described himself as a "libertarian anarchist" (which is tautological: surely all anarchists are libertarians? anyhoo...) This fact should be slotted into the article here. It's worth mentioning that, unusually for an anarchist, Thomas said that he would be voting in the 2005 UK General election -- for the Green Party. I don't know to what degree he supports them, but it's worth adding, I think. -- james—Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.138.189.76 (talk) 21:34, 22 May, 2005 (UTC)

The categories link takes you to a page full of Libertarians. Which would be fine, but there's something of an American cultural bias on here, so it takes you to a page full of Capitalists, Randists and Libertarians as understood in the USA. Mark Thomas definitely isn't any of those. -- Kroppie 22:47, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He 'came out' on his podcast interview with Caroline Lucas as a supporter of the Green Party. --Gordon (talk) 16:01, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That Mark Thomas, a fanatical Collectivism who supported Jeremy Corbyn, described himself as a "libertarian anarchist" is a JOKE - yet the article takes it seriously. Libertarianism is the opposite of the Collectivism that Mr Thomas supports. It would be like the late Margaret Thatcher declaring in a speech "as a life long supporter of the Labour Party, I.....". Mr Thomas is a comedian, his statement that he is a "libertarian anarchist" should be understood as a joke.2A02:C7E:1CD7:8C00:287C:D118:8A59:B3A5 (talk) 07:57, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comedian praised over weapons trade sting[edit]

The parliamentary committee which oversees weapons exports commended campaigning comedian Mark Thomas for his undercover work, which led to official warning letters being issued to a number of companies.

I'd put it in myself, but i'm pissed with this site and input being undone whilst at the same time not improved on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.13.116.249 (talk) 05:32, 3 August, 2006 (UTC)

New Statesman[edit]

He doesn't have a column anymore, for shame, they appear to have let him go. Which means the News Statesman is only worth buying for Pilger and since you can read his columns on the net, it's not worth buying at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.131.33.209 (talk) 08:17, 7 April, 2007 (UTC)

Mess[edit]

The page "Mark Thomas" previously showed information on the British comedian and included disamb. links at the top to other "Mark Thomas"es. This was moved on the 16th Dec to Mark Clifford Thomas. A new page been created at "Mark Thomas" describing a musician. There are several problems: 1. It is not clear why the musician should be at the page "Mark Thomas" rather than the comedian, or indeed the football or ice hockey player. Probably best to have a disamb. page at "Mark Thomas". 2. At present the disamb. links to other Mark Thomases appear at Mark Clifford Thomas. 3. The talk page for Mark Thomas is a redirect to Mark Clifford Thomas. This needs to be sorted out. Unfortunately I am not experienced with moving pages and it looks like there is lots to sort out here. 91.67.129.173 (talk) 14:16, 17 December 2008 (UTC) 2. The current "Mark Thomas"[reply]

Oops, that was me, by the way. Thehalfone (talk) 14:19, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That move was more or less vandalism. This other Mark Thomas is barely notable. I have renamed that page as Mark Thomas (musician) and this one as Mark Thomas (comedian). Edwardx (talk) 22:16, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The only way to reach the page is by typing "Mark Thomas (comedian)" exactly in the search. Searching "Mark Thomas" simply redirects to this musician. There's no "Mark Thomas (disambiguation)" page, and on this Mark Thomas musicians page there's no option to redirect to Mark Thomas the comedian, football player, ice hockey player, or flutist. Also all references to Mark Thomas the comedian elsewhere on wikipedia now link directly to this musician guy. Clearly Mark Thomas the comedian is the most notable, and people searching "Mark Thomas" would mostly be expecting to arrive at his page first. I don't know how to rectify this myself, but if someone else could that'd be great. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.24.113.49 (talk) 17:27, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was move this page from Mark Thomas (comedian) to Mark Thomas. The page currently at Mark Thomas will be moved to Mark Thomas (disambiguation). Aervanath (talk) 12:58, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article was originally at Mark Thomas, with many other articles linking to it. It was moved to "Mark Clifford Thomas" by an editor who felt the church composer Mark Thomas (musician) should have the top spot, and a later editor moved it to Mark Thomas (comedian) when clearing up the mess and disambiguating both.

Mark Thomas appears to be more notable than the church composer, flautist, footballer and ice hockey player that share his name, and many existing articles link to Mark Thomas to reference the comedian and his work. From article content, the ice hockey player seems to be the only significant rival, but I think WP:PRIMARYTOPIC suggests the comedian is more prominent in Wikipedia articles and general news and web coverage.

Objections or support for the move? --McGeddon (talk) 16:37, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support. My view is that this Mark Thomas is the most notable. NRTurner (talk) 19:02, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. It's not an absolutely clear case of primary usage, but appears to be close enough. See ghits section below. The football player appears to have a consider number of hits, but he retired in 2001 and so his notability is almost certainly past its peak, while the comedian appears to be in his prime. --Born2cycle (talk) 20:42, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • weak support I guess there is no question of the primary usage in the UK. The comedian is clearly pretty famous: not too many comedians have a show named after them. He is also a big name in political activism. Globally I am not so sure. It looks like the football player won a superbowl. Thehalfone (talk) 10:35, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
