Lyrical contributions to Dream Theater[edit]

I just added the line "as well as the band's main lyricist", since Petrucci's writings form the bulk of Dream Theater's lyrics.

This seems a bit overstated. Petrucci has contributed a lot more lately, but I would credit Portnoy with writing a great deal as well. Since KevMo's departure I'd say Portnoy & Petrucci split songwriting roughly half & half. ShaneCarey 18:31, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On the JP's official website, this foto is said to be from G3 tour, so isn't it rather from 2001 or 2005 ? I deleted the image at the request of the copyright holder, who says he never released it under the GFDL. if u see his earlier concerts, he has a more flashy stage presence.. the kind a guitarist normally has.. he would move more around the stage.. njoy his music.. for example the concert at marquee with kevin moore in the band... the band displayed a chemistry on stage! though in the past few years it seems 2 have subsided.. even though they may have a chemistry among themselves, they dont seem 2 show it on stage now. But no doubt, they probably play the best stuff ever.. achieved another level in music!

Well... since DT music gets faster and faster over time, Petrucci likes to rest his left feet on a block in order to keep the guitar steady while playing the thougher parts. Youthful competitive drive's running out of steam, no longer a rockstar kid challenging himself towards ever tougher flashier stuff...? But since it's is trademark style, unless he manages to pull a Blackmore's Night-style turn at reinventing himself, his enthusiasm for it no longer much matters, cause he's a middle aged married professional with a DEMANDING JOB in a cutthroat industry, and now the virtuoso stuff that got him famous is his cross to bear... its a freakin job requirement now in a job that had extreme fitness/dexterity prerequisites to begin with, and he knows he needs to keep getting "better" and show "growth" to continue provide for his family. It's like the Aleve commercial with the older hardhat contractor, keeping up is getting more physically demanding but a mans gotta do it --- hence bye bye jumping around, hello life's lil crutches snuck in when needed. and hey, good posture and a bookend beats the hell outta the usual working man's cocktail of "caffeine + painkillers to move, muscle relaxants to sleep" or its hard polydrug rockstar version of "speedball to begin or keep moving, benzos and booze to fall or stay asleep"... Good on him that he's still out there doing his thing, vs how most guys "deal" with such issues in music - dropping out when stuff gets tough like a quitter, slowly cashing out the remaining name recognition with subpar new non-efforts like a hasbeen, or keeping up doped to the gills on borrowed time. Bookend? Boohoo.

Yeah, but i have a Dream Theater version of the song also, where keyboards are used (in Suspended Animation there are no keyboards used). So, who released it first? It's not a Dream Theater song, Petrucci played this song with Jordan Rudess on their "An evening with Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci", and I think it might have also been played with Liquid Tension Experiment but I'm not 100% sure on that one. --Ar73m 13:11, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually Petrucci wrote that song a long time ago. Hair[edit]

From Dream Theater's new promo foto (Image:DT2007.jpg), it looks like Petrucci has grown his hair. Another fact can be tracked from G3's new poster, where John is clearly seen with long hair. Biography errors[edit]

Steve Vai wasn't an early influence, but however, needing more of a technical challenge, John's fingers demanded adapting the hammering speed & melodic style of players such as the Steves (Steve Morse & Steve Vai), the Als (Allan Holdsworth & Al DiMeola), Mike Stern, Joe Satriani, Neal Schon & Eddie Van Halen. Equipment section out of date[edit]

The equipment shown on this section appears to be what was used during the Train Of Thought tour. I think it should be brought up to date using this information http://www.johnpetrucci.com/gear.htm.

I should also point out that the MIDI footcontroller used during the ToT tour wasn't custom built for him. It was in fact a Skrydstrup R&D SC1 with a XT Extension http://www.skrydstrup.com/pages/products/midi_controllers/index.html. On the Bukokan DVD he said it was made my someone in Denmark, but that was because if you look on the main page http://www.skrydstrup.com/ it mentions that all the controllers are hand made by the owner Steen Skrydstrup. hence the misconception. Hmm. I'm not convinced that we really should have such a detailed description of his equipment at Wikipedia. Currently the "equipment" section makes up a very big portion of the article but I don't think it's quite that relevant. Influences reference/citation[edit]

I don't know how to edit wiki very efficiently, but it is verifiable (at least partially) that JP's influences have been mentioned during the course of his instructional video, Rock Discipline. I'm not certain of the verbatim content on the video, but he admits that his list of influences is almost entirely comprised of "Als and Steves." He then mentions Allan Holdsworth, Al DiMeola, Steve Vai and Steve Morse specifically.

If anyone who knows how to do this stuff well is willing to add it as a cite, we can eke away at the flag at the top for lack of verifiable references. I hate when pages that don't have much wrong with them are flagged at the top. Especially when it's for someone who isn't exactly surrounded by controversy. "and should not be in wikipedia." I have to agree with this, and concerning all of the accolades, especially in the introduction. Perhaps if it were in an accolades section, but even then, these magazines put out countless awards to countless professionals at some point in time. An encyclopedic article for a professional musician should be to simply inform readers of their identity so they can know who they are. I don't think that people's opinion of someone is part of their identity. If a reader becomes interested in the person based on their identity, then stuff like this can be found with a quick and simple web search. The equipment section I also believe is in violation of WP:NOT and several policies and guidelines based on policies, particularly because it 1) lists information that is arguably trivial and has nothing to do with the person, 2) reads as being promotional or advertising, 3) is information that only fans would be interested in, hence why I added the fancruft template the other day, and couldn't think of where to begin on the talk page with all of the issues this page has. I think it needs to be almost completely re-written. Especially with these policies in mind: WP:NOTEVERYTHING - WP:NOTFANSITE - WP:NOTADVERTISING - WP:NOTPROMOTION - WP:IINFO. But I have noticed there are templates from 2013 and 2014, so I'm beginning to question the notability of this article in general, since an article with such issues would normally be cleaned up within days if it were of even just a semi-popular or important person. 24.236.167.213 (talk) 14:09, 2 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Crufty lead[edit]

The lead in its current edition needs a major cleanup. Do we really need to list every magazine and every award he's received? It reads like a fan letter rather than an encyclopaedia entry. Mac Dreamstate we could create a separate section for the second and third paragraphs (something like "Reception", "Accolades", "Legacy", idk) and just leave a sentence like "Petrucci has been lauded by some as one of the best guitarists of his generation" or something like that at the lead.
