Shouldn't Matt Lauers date read 1994-Present not 1997-Present? He was news reader from 1994-1997.

Required Cute Animal Stories[edit]

There should be some reference to the required cute animal story that every news broadcast ends with. Some explanation about the demographic those are aimed at would be helpful. Exploitation of a Live Show[edit]

Title[edit]

That is the official name of the show from the very beginning.

Summer co-hosts[edit]

I don't think the Summer co-hosts should be listed under the hosts section. They re not hosts and are only fill-ins Aronk 02:54, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Brand Extensions[edit]

There was also a THIRD brand extension to the Today show. It actually preceded Early Today & Later Today in 1999, as the FIRST brand extension. In 1982, Today introduced an earlier show titled "Early Today" (same name as the show in 1999). It was hosted by Gumbel & Pauley, and aired from 6 to 7 AM, preceding the Today show. It only lasted a year, as doing three hours a day (and having to get up an hour earlier) started to wear on the two hosts. The show was cancelled in 1983, and replaced by NBC News at Sunrise. Could someone add this fact in under the Brand Extensions. I'm not a regular contributor to this page, so I'd feel kind of funny stepping on someone's territory. Thanks

West Coast Feed[edit]

I'm pretty uninitiated when it comes to US broadcasting, so how exactly does the west coast feed of the Today Show look? Are the news updates recorded like the rest of the program or does the west coast get live news from the NYC studio, if so, are they presented by the regular newsreaders? I live on the West coast, they only updated the show if breaking news happens and the show still looks the same. Usually its just a new opening of the show and they say Pacific on the Live graphic

Looking for segment[edit]

I'm a teacher looking for the name of a segment they used to do on the Today Show. Someone would throw a dart at the U.S. map. Then the reporter would go to the city indicated by the dart and pull a random name from the phone book. The reporter would then do a feature story on that person.

Hour 4 Contract Restrictions[edit]

Controversies heading[edit]

Does anyone think there needs to be a qualifier under the sub-heading "Memogate" for this article, since usually when the term "Memogate" is used, it refers to the CBS incident during the 2004 campaign that, among other things, ran Dan Rather out of the CBS Evening News anchor chair? Number of episodes[edit]

The infobox says there were "20,718" episodes as of January 1, 2008, but doesn't cite a source for this figure. The number "20,039" was added by an anonymous IP, and the figure has been updated since then, but I found no source for these figures. In 2007, The Houston Chronicle said "more than 20,000 episodes", but this figure may have come from Wikipedia. I'm not sure how this number makes sense, because by my count, there were:

1862 weeks from January 14, 1952 to September 18, 1987, while the show was broadcasting 5 mornings a week
254 weeks from September 20, 1987 to July 31, 1992, while it was on 6 mornings a week, and
804 weeks from August 1, 1992 to December 29 28, 2007, while it was on 7 mornings a week.

By my calculations, and assuming exactly 1 episode per morning, that gives 1862 x 5 + 254 x 6 + 804 x 7 + 3 4 = 16,465 16,466 episodes as of January 1, 2008. This number was also added by an anonymous IP and had no source. The second link you give says there were 20,441 total days between January 14, 1952 and January 1, 2008 (not including that date). How could there have been 276 more episodes than total days of broadcasting? And that doesn't even acccount for the days that Today was definitively not broadcasting: i.e. weekends before 1987, Sundays before 1992. There may have been some special editions on some of those days, but I doubt there were 277 or more, and certainly not over 4000.
I'm going to update the figure based on 1862 x 5 + 254 x 6 = 10834 broadcasts until July 31, 1992, plus 6074 days from August 1, 1992 up to and including March 18, 2009, giving a total of 16,908 episodes so far. Though modern and efficient news tickers were not popularized in the United States until September 11, 2001, the first record of a news ticker as part of a regular broadcast is from NBC's Today show on its debut edition, January 14, 1952. Without the benefit of computer-generated headlines and graphics, the ticker was vastly different than the one we would know today. The Today ticker was an actual piece of paper with typewritten headlines superimposed on the lower third of the screen. The ticker was never very successful as a communications tool and was dropped not long thereafter.

Start dates in infobox[edit]

I had made this change, but it was reverted by an IP with a history of vandalism warnings. As the infobox is currently written, it gives the years when Lauer (1997) and Guthrie (2012) became co-anchors, but when Roker (1996) and Morales (2006) started on the show at all. Lauer joined the show as news anchor in 1994, and Guthrie as third hour co-host in 2011. One of two changes should be made: Either all four should be given the dates when they started their current roles - Lauer 1997, Guthrie 2012, Roker and Morales as third hour co-hosts (2007?), or all four should be given the original start dates of their tenure on the show. I prefer the latter, but I don't feel strongly about it. Whichever way it goes, it should be consistent. Thoughts? JTRH (talk) 13:34, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Significant format change September 2013[edit]

I hope I am wrong about this, but the show seems to have taken a significant format change as of 9-16-2013. The well known show or at appeared to have jettisoned (hard news leading in the 7am hour, with the lead interview in the first half hour, followed by softer stories in the 8am hour) in favor of a social free for all. News is no longer the lead for each half hour. In fact respectable journalism seems to have given away to loud chat feats, nervous POV camera operation and commercial plugs and Internet updates. There has been a controversy on this article about when Morales joined the Today show. According to Morales's Biography on the TODAY's website, she joined in 2006. You might want to read up on the guidelines on personal attacks and Civility before continuing further. Roker's inclusion in the infobox is inappropriate. Al Roker is Co-Host of the third Hour and is part of The TODAY Team. He does segments sometimes in the 8am Hour. You might as well remove Ginger Zee from good morning america page then. Actually it does not. The headline of the article describes him as "co-anchor and weather and feature anchor". The initial paragraph of that page says that he
  • has been the weather and feature anchor on NBC News’ TODAY since January 1996.
  • he has been co-host of the morning show “Wake Up with Al” on the Weather Channel since July 2009.
  • also served as the weekday weather forecaster for News Channel 4’s early evening newscast Live at 5on WNBC-TV, NBC’s flagship owned and operated station in New York City until January of 2000.
The page uses the term host in exactly three places, saying
  • Since July 2009 he has been co-host of the morning show “Wake Up with Al” on the Weather Channel.
  • Since 1985, he has served each holiday season in midtown Manhattan as co-host for the annual Christmas at Rockefeller Center.
  • The seven-time Emmy award winner also co-hosts The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Rose Bowl Parade and appears on various specials for NBC.

Christmas Day and New Year Broadcasts[edit]

It has been noted on air and also on the TODAY Radio on XM on the Today Condifiential show on Friday 2pm EST on July 1st 2016 by the Executive Producers that the crew was happy that Christmas Day lands on a Sunday so they don't have to record a Christmas Day broadcast. Anchors complain since they have to stay late a couple weeks before the holiday and record a 3 hour show with all members of crew before they leave for holiday breaks.

NBC's announcement about the main anchors doing the third hour only pertains to the current week. No permanent decision has been announced about the format, hosts, location, or anything else. And Monday's show may well have been atypical because of the breaking news from Pittsburgh. We're jumping the gun if we assume that what's going on this week is permanent. I propose that the section Today (U.S. TV program)#Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda be split into a separate page called Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda. The fourth hour of Today is notable enough for its own page and its section is large enough to fill it. Today with Kathie Lee & Hoda has been on for over 10 years and definitely isn't the same show as the earlier hours of Today. Also, ABC's new GMA third hour Strahan and Sara (formerly GMA Day) has its own page and I don't see why KLG and Hoda shouldn't. Limmidy (talk) 03:24, 1 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

With Jenna Hager joining the fourth hour, I hope that the format will be a bit more mature (Firetruck song--really???) and that alcohol will not be served during the show. For those of us who are alcoholics and have had family lives affected by this tragic addiction, having female alcoholics drinking on TV at 10:00 in the morning is a definite trigger for those who are trying to be sober. Yes, we don't have to watch the program, but seriously--what a poor programming choice. ----
