Desert[edit]

Dumb question: this article says that a comet passing caused the desertification. Non-canon info[edit]

I recently found and restored the "hidden" footnote which admits that some info here is from the Dune Encyclopedia; obviously, any such non-canon info should be removed or referenced back to the Encyclopedia. Given that the explanation provided by the fan-fiction encyclopedia is directly contradicted by Herbert's novels, why even include such meaningless fan speculation? seems odd. Source of name[edit]

Does anbody know where exactly the name 'Arrakis' comes from? Is it from some kind of mythology, or is it a name from a place that already exists on earth? Or (and this is what I think) is it just something that Frank Herbert made up out of thin air? It should be included somewhere if it actually has a source; though if it was just something made up on the spot, than just disregard this suggestion.74.101.33.13 (talk) 02:32, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Arrakeen[edit]

Arrakeen is not the largest city on arrakis. That would be the Harkonnen seat at Carthag. It's mentioned in part one of the "Dune" that the Atreides chose the smaller garrison town of Arrakeen to avoid a large harkonnen presence and disassociate themselves from their predecessors. Start a Portrayals section?[edit]

Since there's been more than one Dune film, and imitations/parodies, might it be useful to create a "Portrayals" section to cover each? For example, there are the three Dune films/mini-series, George Lucas is believed to have based the Star Wars planet Tatooine on Arrakis, National Lampoon's Doon is a parody novel, and so on. 24.214.238.86 (talk) 19:15, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

With characters there is a certain notability with performers, but I don't think there is much to say about a planet in that regard. The adaptations are also more appropriately compared to the source material (the Dune article mentions the parody, etc). The Star Wars tidbit may have a place, but the one source that we currently have about that (also in the Dune article) is technically not a reliable one.— TAnthony^Talk 18:37, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

I am not entirely convinced that the transcription provided is correct.
