Notability Issues

Readers should note that this article conceals the true nature of the Bandung Fe Institute (BFI). In particular, researchers in economics and social complexity should be warned that the Bandung Fe Institute is not officially recognized as a "research institution" in Indonesia and that it is run by three amateurs (the so-called "Board of Science" of the institute) who have not obtained their first academic degrees (they may well already be university drop-outs) and have had no adequate training or experience in conducting proper research. Readers can verify this fact for themselves by reading the brief biography of the three main "researchers" at the Bandung Fe Institute's official website: [1]. In fact, the "President" of the institute, one Hokky Situngkir, freely admits on his personal website ([2] and click on the link "Personal Academic Stance" on that page), at least up to the date of the writing of this talk page (August 12, 2007), that he did not complete his undegraduate education in Electrical Engineering, and attributes his personal failure to what he perceives to be "the emotional arrogance that is often found in our academic society" and "societal cosmetics of academic degrees." This attitude is also shared by the other two members of the "Board of Science" and they apparently have as their motto "if you are searching knowledge and science, do not go to school but to the library!," indicating their contempt for formal tertiary education. Members of the institute have posted numerous low-quality, trivial and/or often incomprehensible (due to their lack of mastery of English grammar and writing) papers on various relatively unregulated (i.e. not peer-reviewed) online repositories such RePEc [3] and Arxiv [4] covering topics in "economic physics" and social complexity. The academically trained readers can verify the level of competence of these researchers for themselves by examining any of these papers. Their idea of "research" is introducing a simple model, performing some numerical simulation and then making general qualitative conclusions based on the simulations without any in-depth or rigorous analysis. This is something which most serious researchers would consider to merely be material for a term paper assignment in some undergraduate modeling and simulation course, rather than true and useful research. Of course, this comes as no surprise due to the BFI members' inadequate training and lack of experience.

The Bandung Fe Institute publishes the "journal" entitled Journal of Social Complexity. This journal has as "Editors" and "Board of Editors" the same three amateurs that are on the "Board of Science." They are ultimately responsible for reviewing and approving papers for publication in this journal. Therefore, researchers with advanced academic degrees and years of research experience should think twice before submitting their scholarly works to be judged by inexperienced amateurs. It is strange that despite their contempt for academia, the members of the Bandung Fe Institute try to reach out to members of the international academic community to get recognition for their inadequate works.Erik incognito 00:56, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
