The Fiat Tipo was launched in 1988 as replacement for the Strada.

The 1978 Fiat Strada had been one of the most weird-looking family cars ever built in Europe. Ride and handling, especially on the 130TC 'hot hatch', were good, but build quality and reliability left more than a little to be desired.

The Tipo's task was to repair Fiat's image for suspect build quality and doubtful reliability.

While the Strada-based Regata saloon and estate continued until 1990 (when the Tipo-based Tempra was launched), the Tipo was developed as a five-door hatchback with galvanised body panels which finally laid to rest the spectre of rust which had ravaged its predecessor.

The entry-level 1.1 Tipo was sold on the Italian market only. Most export markets only saw the 1.4 and 1.6 petrol and 1.9 diesel engines. The 1.8 and 2.0 16-valve engines, the largest of which was capable of nearly 130mph, were not sold outside Italy until 1991.

The Tipo's equipment levels were good, with most models getting power steering, central locking and electric windows as standard.

In 1993, the five-year-old Tipo was boosted by a mild facelift and the introduction of a three-door version. It was one of the best selling cars in Italy and was also proving popular on export markets.

1995 was the seventh year of Tipo production - and the last. It made way for the stylish new three-door Bravo and five-door Brava. The Tempra saloon and estate continued for another year when the Brava-based Marea was launched.

engine table[edit]

The table should be fixed, it has some errors I think the DGT version was 90 PS, maybe some more familiar with this model could fix the table? --Typ932 T·C 18:47, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
