According to The Royal Shakespeare Company, this is pronounced [POR-shuh].

The OED has the same, as well as the adjectival form 'Portian' (por'-shun). kwami 2005 June 30 06:58 (UTC)

Origin of Name[edit]

According to the article, Portia is named after a character in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. The reference given for this piece of information is a link to the USGS Astrogeology's Gazetteer of planetary names, etc. But on the linked page, it says that Portia is named after the Wife of Brutus in Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar"!
