A funny thing happened on the way to the forum[edit]

Untitled[edit]

The Gumball Rally http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gumball_Rally Why is this film not on the list? Personally, I think a lot of the inclusions in the list, particularly in the recent years, don't qualify as 'car chase films'. Relevance issue[edit]

Great Article Status declared[edit]

You know, this is a great article. It has zero encylopedic merit, and it's just a bunch of non-third party OR information. But - I wanted to know about the first car chases in movies, I came to this article, and I learned a crapload. People should think about how articles like this add tremendous value to WP as they consider how to govern the project. Broader lead sentence needed[edit]

It reads "A car chase is the vehicular pursuit of suspects by law enforcers." but the chaser is not always the police. Sometimes the car is chasing is full of baddies, like mafia henchmen, paparazzi, or truant officers. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:00, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Police pursuit[edit]

I was hoping to discover the legal issues and definitions of a Police pursuit but discovered it redirects to this article and that this article focuses on the sensationalism aspect of vehicle chases. The history for the Police pursuit article shows it's always been a redirect.

It's my understanding that when law enforcement is pursuing a suspect on foot and/or vehicle that they don't need a warrant to enter private property while in pursuit. How is the word "pursuit" defined? For example, an Internet crimes task force could be said to be in pursuit of a suspect but I doubt that gives them the right to kick down the person's front door without a warrant as they were "in pursuit". I imagine that the topic of "pursuit" has been brought up many times in criminal law. This article has a section on "Inter-jurisdictional pursuits and policy issues" but it did not mention the legal aspects related to pursuits outside of a jurisdiction. If a suspect disappears then at what point, legally, is it not considered a pursuit? I have found several pursuit related articles:

  • Tennessee v. Garner A Supreme Court of the United States decision that, under the Fourth Amendment, when a law enforcement officer is pursuing a fleeing suspect, he or she may not use deadly force to prevent escape unless "the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a significant threat of death or serious physical injury to the officer or others."
  • Scott v. Harris A Supreme Court of the United States decision involving a lawsuit against a sheriff's deputy brought by a motorist who was paralyzed after the officer ran his eluding vehicle off the road during a high-speed car chase.
  • Mullenix v. Luna A Supreme Court of the United States decision that a police officer who shot a suspect during a police pursuit was entitled to qualified immunity.
  • Skye's Law An Australian law that makes attempts to flee police a crime in itself.
