Regina Benjamin[edit]

Dr. Benjamin is not from Bayou La Batre, although she set up a clinic there because she was required to spend a certain number of years serving a rural community in exchange for government financing of her medical education. Regina Benjamin is from Baldwin County and went to high school in Fairhope.

Either change the heading to say people who've lived in Bayou La Batre or else take her name off. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.85.217.246 (talk) 17:21, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

IPA pronunciation?[edit]

I lived the first 18 years of my life in Bayou La Batre, and I don't recall ever hearing "Bayou" pronounced [ˈbe.ju]. More like [ˈbaɪ.oʊ lə ˈbætʃ.ɹi] or [ˈbaɪ.u lə ˈbætʃ.ɹi]. (See pronunciations given in bayou article). In fact it sometimes sounds more like [ˈbaɪ.lə ˈbætʃ.ɹi] or [ˈba.lə ˈbætʃ.ɹi]. Unless somebody can defend the pronunciation current in the article, I'm planning on changing it. --Jeff robertson 00:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is the last syllable really chree, or is it just the sound of tree? kwami (talk) 21:31, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
At least in my speech, "tree" has a discernible "ch" sound in it. I can make myself say [tr], but the tendency to say [tʃr] is so strong that I would always do it in normal speech. --Jeff robertson (talk) 13:27, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, as long as that's automatic, and doesn't contrast with tree, we don't need to transcribe it. kwami (talk) 19:36, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with the proposed change in pronunciation (assuming I understand the symbols correctly). Locals speaking to locals call the place By-la-ba-tree, ("y" as a long "I" sound, "a" as short "a" sound, light touch on the "t") all slurred together without a breath.(Doctorfun (talk) 17:07, 10 February 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Is it a city or a town?[edit]

Bayou La Batre is a "city" according to its website. An editor in 2008 changed the text in the article to "town" with the explanation of "Perhaps a matter of semantics, but I don't believe a population of 2,500 residents should be referred to as a "city"."

I don't know if there is any legal difference in Alabama between a city and a town, but I think we should defer to what the community calls itself unless there is a reliable source that can substantiate something contrary. This is affecting where the article is categorized and where it appears in a navbox ({{Mobile County, Alabama}}).

I propose changing the texts, categories, and navbox to show that this is a city and not a town. — Archer1234 (talk) 21:19, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

From the Wikipedia article on towns,

In Alabama, the legal use of the terms "town" and "city" is based on population. A municipality with a population of 2,000 or more is a city, while less than 2,000 is a town (Code of Alabama 1975, Section 11-40-6). For legislative purposes, municipalities are divided into eight classes based on population. Class 8 includes all towns, plus cities with populations of less than 6,000 (Code of Alabama 1975, Section 11-40-12).
