The Controversy controversy[edit]

The word "controversy" appears on this page, in various forms, six times. Any way we can edit the page to take out some of the redundancy, and cite examples other than Wal-Mart regarding exactly why the album is controversial?

Controversy[edit]

With images, lyrics, and videos that shock the uneducated, inciting protest - that's controversy.

In Japan, sales of the aforementioned record were refused, not because of Omega's androgynous appearence, but because there were six fingers on his left hand, as opposed to five. Five and one. 15.

It looks to be only for fingers. If your mind tells you there are two sets of two fingers linked together, that would make six. But for the sake of the image, there are only four fingers.

Don't take away from the existing mystique of 15. But actually, I've seen that before too - maybe four fingers, not six. But then if he actually had eleven fingers on his other hand...165.138.141.60 15:49, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its because in Japan the number 4 (as the number of fingers in his hand)is seen as the "number of death", because 4 and death is for them spelled the same(or almost the same) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hellspriest (talkcontribs) 05:05, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Japan Refusing?[edit]

If Japan really refused to sell the record then explain this: http://www.mansoncollectors.com/album_ma.htm#jpn —Preceding unsigned comment added by Theworldsucks (talkcontribs) 17:48, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

omega[edit]

Omega is not the 5th letter in the greek alphabet - Epsilon is. Omega is the last letter. Blaqsparrow (talk) 13:20, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Glam metal?[edit]

Yes, Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals (1998) was inspired by two glam rock figureheads: his long-time hero David Bowie and, by a lesser degree, T. Rex. In it's heyday (the 1970s), glam rock was almost the polar opposite to stuff that was mainstream at the time, such as prog rock and heavy rock (you know, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, etc). It was almost the "alternative rock" of it's time.

Glam metal aka "cock rock", though, is quite another matter. "Cock rock" was formed by L.A. scenesters who took the New Wave of British Heavy Metal's blueprint and basically turned it into party music. Although glam rock and glam metal share a fascination with glitter and visual gender bending, they come come very different places in music. Besides, most of Manson's influences (say, Slayer, Skinny Puppy, Jane's Addiction) come from the extreme metal/industrial music/alternative rock spectrum, which in turn are generally antagonistic towards glam metal.

Ok, what am I trying to say with all of this? That I'd be careful to include Marilyn Manson in the same musical style as Mötley Crüe. Historically and musically speaking, they're worlds apart... Musicaindustrial (talk) 17:55, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced and Original Research[edit]

This article is awful. It's full of opinion, and only one reference which backs up any of the claims (the second reference doesn't even discuss Marilyn Manson's birthday, so I don't know why it's used there). It is also full of weasel words like "This album virtually rebuilt the band" and "Arguably, this album's most successful song is 'The Dope Show'". And especially claims like "Manson has stated in interviews that Johnny Depp is..." should be referenced; if he said it in an interview, than cite the interview, otherwise it has to be removed.

This article about a fantastic album needs a shit-ton of work; I have added the "Unreferenced" and "Original Research" templates accordingly.

Alternative Pop/Rock?[edit]

i don't think there's any of that type of style in that album because after I've listened to it, it doesn't sound like alternative pop/rock.65.34.252.251 (talk) 00:13, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't matter what you or anyone else thinks it "sounds like" because Wikipedia does not allow original research. All Music Guide (aka Allmusic) is a proven, reliable source and unless you can find a valid and reliable source which contradicts the information it provides, the genres must be left alone.
(And how did you manage to misspell "alternative" a second time?) DKqwerty (talk) 00:33, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yellow Text[edit]

The quoting of the long passage of yellow-text ("In the end I became them and I led them/ After all none of us really qualified as humans/ We were hardworn, atomatic and as hollow as the 'o' in God/ I reattatched my emtions cellular and narcotic/ From the top of Holywood it looked like space/ Millions of capsules and Mechanical Animals/ A city filled with dead stars and a girl I called Comawhite/ This is my Omēga.") contains many spelling mistakes. I cannot actually make out most of it on my copy (too small and hard to make out)- but can anybody confirm that it's actually written like this, or if somebody has just rushed their typing whilst submitting it? Chiiild (talk) 12:00, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's actually copyrighted material, so it should most likely be removed; so should most of the unsourced crap in this article. DKqwerty (talk) 16:54, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
