Name service protocol[edit]

OK, so what's a name service protocol? Do we need a name service protocol article? --Syaifulnizam_Shamsudin

Every implementation of a name service has or follows a specific name service protocol. There is no "Name Service Protocol". There are only protocols for name services. Examples of name service protocols are DNS, WINS, NetBIOS. Stephen Charles Thompson (talk) 18:43, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

IP address[edit]

Someone changed the IP address used in the first example to 208.280.152.2 which is not valid. Anyone know why? Anyone want to change it to something meaningful? BrianAshe (talk) 02:15, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not about DNS[edit]

I have to agree with this comment. The article is a bit confused at the moment—on the one hand it tries to speak generically, and on the other, there's a lot of DNS-specific detail. Which is it? I just corrected some DNS-specific detail, but I think the argument that that detail ought not to be in the article is valid. There also seems to be a lot of link farming in this article, and the See Also section is inordinately long.

Personally, I think an article about DNS servers would be useful, and I wonder if an article about Name Servers is useful, because different name services use very different technologies. WINS, for example, is partly a broadcast protocol, but can operate with a server on managed networks. But there ought to be some decision as to which thing this article is about, because right now I think a reader would come away with a rather confused idea of what a name server is. Recursive vs Iterative queries[edit]

Only recursive queries are mentioned, although there's not enough detail to distinguish between iterative vs recursive I guess. This section needs to be expanded. I agree this should be overhauled. The section Name_server#Recursive query doesn't do a great job in explaining the differences between iterative and recursive queries. This is actually more relevant from a clients perspective. But this section mostly talks about servers. Also when a server is walking the DNS tree like, it generally *iteratively* queries other name servers, so this seems wrong: "it may recursively query name servers higher up in the hierarchy.".
