This was a project to add the arms of the towns, boroughs, cities, districts and counties of England and Wales to both the English Wikipedia and the Welsh Wicipedia (see the "other languages" link) where appropriate.

All the images came from the excellent civicheraldry.co.uk [1]. I've contacted the webmaster of the site and he's happy for the pictures to be used as long as we give credit. He mentions that towns may occasionally object to the use of their civic arms on a website. (However, I consider this fair use in the same way that reproducing a corporate logo is fair use.)

The bot I used was Robbot, under the name of HeraldicBot.

• At least some of the images (I haven't checked all) uploaded from this source are marked with {{coatofarms}}. This is insufficient license. If the creator of these images wishes to release them, I recommend he be contacted again to request he release the images under a free license, such as {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} (see [2]). We need specific release of his rights, not just an affirmation that we can use them so long as he is credited. Until such time as he does, the copyright status of this images remains unclear. I've removed two of these coats of arms from geo-stubs. I'm re-removing them until this copyright status is clarified. Indeed, even the very image on this page is currently a violation of our policies :(. Thanks, --Durin 05:08, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
• Many are now copyright expired, and can be used without restriction. For the rest, use with a fair use rationale should be adequate. It remains preferred that 'free images' are used. Cheers Kbthompson (talk) 12:37, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
