im not sure the article is correct when it says that punk came over from england; the phenomenon itself was american and groups like the the sex pistols and the clash seem to have wanted to model themselves after their imagination of was american punk was -- like the ramones -- consequently, they greated something quite different and something more viable in the media, so the pistols got a considerable amount of coverage and were labelled punk (and they certainly are a part of it), but not without the american originators saying "what? now wait a minute..."

I agree, some investigation should be done into punk origin. A while ago I remember reading that there was no definitive answer to where punk came from (can't remember were I read that). Perhaps the line that implies punk originated from somewhere should be removed and replaced with a more thoughtful explaination.
While we are talking about this, maybe this is a good time to bring up a problem I noticed with the nature of the article itself. Is this an article about culture or about history. If it is then should the name be changed or should the content here be merged into punk? Should there be an article on punk history? Is that warrented? And should this article be about the subgenres of punk like straight edge punk and neo-nazi punk or should it be a disambuguation page that references articles on the cultural or historical aspects of these genres. Where did it come from; a question as old as punk itself. I don't want to pretend I know everything, but I do feel that I should put something down here. If you feel that punk started with the sex pistols, you haven't done your research. It is true that the sex pistols did have a hand in starting the clash--Joe Strummer started the clash after his pub band the 101ers opened for the sex pistols--but the sex pistols wouldn't have been a punk band if they didn't here blank generation by Richard Hell and the Voidoids. s song and wrote there version of it which they called pretty vancant. This was the first sex pistols song according to an interview with Steve Jones. But, here's the thing. The music was all american, Though american punk never generated the ferocity and energy of either sex pistols or the anti nowhere league. The term punk or punker or punk rock started with the U.K. and I'm not sure where the style of dress came from.

the interview was in the movie The Filth and the Fury - A Sex Pistols Film I think it was with Steve Jones, it was with one of them anyway. the stuff about the 101ers was on wikipedia

Punk owns all the other genres

This page is just a history of punk, which is duplicated by the Punk Rock article. Tenebrous 22:36, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm in favor of merging this with Punk Rock or rewriting it to be about aspects of punk culture other than music. As it stands, this is a secondary article about Punk Rock. --Zwilson 18:21, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merging[edit]

The parts of this article concerning punk music should be merged into Punk rock, the parts concerning punk fashion should be merged into Punk fashion, and the parts concerning punk as a subculture should be merged into Punk--the title "Punk culture" doesn't work in describing punk as a whole, because punk is a subculture, not a culture--plus the title "punk" is short and sweet, and most people don't use the phrase "punk rock" as a noun for the punk subculture. I have merged some material into Punk. The rest of the article should be merged into Punk rock. I am removing the merge template for Punk and leaving the one for Punk rock. Ecto 07:55, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All the content about punk rock has been merged into the Punk rock article. The rest of this article should be deleted, as it is the same as the first paragraph of the Punk rock article, or duplicates content from Punk, so there is no further need to merge anything else. Punk culture should then serve as a redirect to Punk. I will go ahead and do that if there is no opposition. Ecto 01:08, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NO WAY[edit]

Dude, punk is not the as punk rock! Punks dont need to listen to punk music, as a lot of ppl listen and aren't really punk. I dont agree with the merge.

Please see the Punk article. Ecto 01:32, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
