Society has spent most of the last 250 years of the industrial revolution innovating in order to squeeze more productivity out of people. This has been highly commendable and successful, but it will not be sustainable over the course of many centuries.

The new economic imperative arising before is to derive those innovations that allow nations to produce more with less of the earth's resources. These will be the winning technologies, management processes, and public policies of the 21st century and beyond.
