ok, but perhaps it doesn't give the whole picture[edit]

The problem with finding data on the Arjun is that by and large it is tainted. Celebrated by both Indians and Pakistanis as either proof of India's technological expertise or ineptitude, most people who care enough to write about it come with baggage attached. From much searching it seems that for political reasons the Indian Army will be forced to accept the 124 Arjuns (one brigade) and then following this India will procure T-90S MBTs instead. The Arjun was originally pursued because it was thought to be a cost-effective alternative to foreign procurement, however the Arjun is probably one of the most expensive tanks in history and it is still not fit for service. Though I couldn't access the forum through the link below, the URL seems to indicate that it is an Indian based forum (or at least with Indian sympathies). The Wikipedia article was probably praised becuase it became consumed with the specs. (which are opinion neutral) rather than the bigger picture that is Indian embarrassment (the Arjun still cannot pass its field tests) and the tremendous waste of money. Though arguments will always be had surrounding the worth of the Arjun, a reasonable person would agree that it is less effective and more expensive than the T-90S. This should be brought out in the article. And the "totally fantastic article on the Arjun"?--perhaps an Indian car magazine is not the bastion of neutrality that Wikipedia seeks, and no one should seriously consider such a one sided article when trying to form a well thought out opinion.

Good Article[edit]

Arjun project is one of the most controversial project in the recent history.Initialy DRDO developed a poor tank which had lots of problems. It was made with western systems in mind and thus was lot more heavier than the Russian T- series tank which was the tradition in the Indian army. The weight also brought with it logistics problem. It was hard for the officers to change their philosphy quickly from a Russian system to a western one.Due to this reasons Arjun was critized as a failure and condemned by everyone.

But DRDO corrected all these problems and came up with much more improved tank.Ithadsignificantdesicomponents ,incresedfirepower, egromonics, superior FCS etc.It resembles western system and a huge change in the Indian war philosophy.Arjun has the ablity to take a hit and still kill the enemy in present war environment.

Induction of Arjun Main Battle Tanks

(Source: Indian Ministry of Defence; issued Aug. 25, 2005)

NEW DELHI --- The first batch of five production version of Arjun tanks, was scheduled to go through comparative trials in June 2005 by Army.

During the preparatory stage, certain units did not pass acceptance criteria. These are being rectified for the trials.

This information was given by the Defence Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee in a written reply to Shri Lalit Suri in Rajya Sabha today.

Improving accuracy of the article[edit]

Some of the facts in the article need to be corrected. I noticed the 12.7mm heavy machine gun being described as an anti-aircraft gun. Most modern main battle tanks use their main guns to shoot down helicopters. Heavy machine guns are intended to be used against infantry and vehicles with light or no armor. See

Just noticed the mention of the main gun being able to shoot down helicopters. Reworded sentence about the use of the machine guns.

Can anyone confirm that the Arjun uses the NSVT for it's 12.7 mm?

What about its failings?[edit]

The artilce seems to pretty biased toward pro-arjun arguments. Some of the text seems to come from the marketing brochure put out by the manufacturer, for example, the paragragh about the "wolfpack network", which on close readeing does not really say anything about what the capability actually is.

This tank was discussed in the article "worlds worst tanks" on Strategy page (http://www.strategypage.com/dls/articles/20054172327.asp)

shouldn't this article discuss some of the pro and anti viewpoints on this tank?

Pronunciation[edit]

I've temporarily removed this from the article. The first pronunciation looks like IPA, but the second is in brackets. I still can't tell what the pronunciation should be.

 Ar`jun - [ahr-juh-n]
    - Noun
Strong, muscular, passionate, and smart. Luxurious and excuisite. Delicasy in most contries. Also see legend, sophisticated, funny, handsome, or articulate.

Is that ahr-JOON /ar'dʒun/, rhyming with moon? Or AHR-juhn /'ardʒʌn/, rhyming with pun?Michael Z. 2006-09-10 16:06 Z

Project Cancelled[edit]

India has decided to relegate its Indian designed and built tank, the Arjun, to training duties, and will not put these tanks into mass production. http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htarm/articles/20061007.aspx
