History of sewer systems[edit]

As far as I know the first sewer system was developed by the sumerians. They used clay pipes to drain the water from buildings into a central sewer system. The first example in history of water management systems predates even the sumerians and is related to the Ubaid culture in Mesopotamia which had constructed irrigation as early as the -6 millennia BC.

sewer vs storm[edit]

This article should probably be reworked as an article about sanitary sewer only. The storm stuff should be moved to the storm drain article. The sanitary sewer article that exists now should then be deleted.

Also, mentions of process and oily sewers used in refineries and industry are worth mentioning.

Image removal[edit]

Sewer alligators[edit]

I removed this uncited claim: "An 8-foot alligator was trapped in a New York sewer in 1935." A few cursory google searches didn't turn anything up, and after the paragraph about urban legends it just stretches credulity. If it is true, it requires a citation, and should be explained. I also fact-tagged the bit about the NYC sculptures. Could be true, but it would be good to have it cited properly. Taranah 15:37, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sewers vs storm drains[edit]

Shouldn't this article have a disambiguation? American usage of "sewer" is generally for a conduit of waste; British usage of "sewer" is generally equivalent to the American "storm drain".

Merge with Sewerage proposal[edit]

I guess there should be a proposition here from whoever advocated the merge of the two articles. However there isn't ....

Oppose - Sewers relate solely to the pipes that convey sewage (or other waters). Sewerage refers to the whole infrastructure which includes pumps, detritors, macerators rising mains (not strictly sewers (at least in the UK)) and every bit of engineering up to the inlet works of a treatment plant. I would have no problems merging Sewer into Sewerage but not the other way round. Velela 20:07, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This page split[edit]

I have boldly split this article so that the stuff relating to storm drains goes into the storm drain article and the stuff relating to sanitary sewers goes into the sanitary sewer article. I would suggest having sewer go to sanitary sewer with one of those sentences at the top in italics letting you go to storm drain or combined sewer if you want. This will remove quite a few disamg links as well Drunken Pirate (talk) 05:47, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
