Years in science[edit]

David, according to the standards in place at Wikipedia:WikiProject years in science, we use CE or BCE in the first sentince of all the year in science pages. If you'd like to suggest a change, please do so there before changing all the year in science pages. Thanks, Gentgeen 02:02, 4 Jan 2004 (UTC)

True, there really is no need for the CE for any of the years, as it's fairly unambigious what year we're refering to for the current articles. I just put it in the template because it is the current scientific norm for calandar marking. I'm not really opposed to removing them, but think we should be consistent in its use. NANPA[edit]

CMNI appeared here... http://docs.nanpa.com/cgi-bin/npa_reports/nanpa?function=list_npa_geo_location

But since its something other than a country, I'm removing "CMNI" from the list. WhisperToMe 23:33, 12 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I'm not sure what it stands for myself X_X - It was on the listing, so it has to stand for something... hmmm.... WhisperToMe 02:58, 13 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Quoting you: Nice job on fake book. I put it up as a stub hoping it would attract somebody like you!

I didn't write the text, I just merged Fake book and Fake Book (note the capital 'b') and rearranged some sentences. Stw 11:51, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)

The trouble is - I'm not knowlegable. I know quackery when i see it, but I don't have the detailed medical knowlege to de a really good job on it. Still at least iris master is polite. I can handle rambling technobabble. I've been using the quackwatch website as a guidetheresa knott 16:48, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)

No need to be sorry! The same individual has repeatedly commercialized the article and in doing so, spammed the page history; you're not the first to overlook its earlier incarnation. It was nearly placed on VfD because of these antics, but I've since requested the page be protected.

Anyway, removing the glop was well appreciated, as a stub is better than an advert any day. I've been watching the article and just happened to stop by. Thanks for your effort! :) -- Hadal 20:44, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Thanks[edit]

I'm surprised we haven't run into each other before. I dropped by to say thanks for your help at Bambino, and saw on your user page you'd created the Arthur Ransome article. Ransome was my favorite author as a child (indeed, I'm ashamed I didn't think of looking to see if he had an article until now), and I'm most pleased to see you gave him a little home here. Now...let's sort out how the Greater Boston metropolitan area feels about Babe Ruth, Bucky Dent, and the idea of voodoo. ;) Jwrosenzweig 21:37, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hey, when I realized how long you'd been here and the good work you've done, I checked Wikipedia:Administrators to make sure you were an admin. Seeing that you were not, I took the liberty of nominating you here. You can reply with an acceptance or refusal of the nomination at any time you like...the vote will continue for at least a week before a response from you is absolutely necessary, but you're always welcome beforehand. Keep up the good work! :) Jwrosenzweig 21:44, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Sysop[edit]

Congratulations! You are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. Good luck. Angela. 08:20, Feb 20, 2004 (UTC)

Irismeister[edit]

Hi David! I've decided to ask the arbitration committee to look into Irismeister's behaviour on wikipedia (of course, I don't know if Jimbo will approve it, or if the committee will accept the case). If there's any particular point/issue/incident you think I should be aware of, then please email me. Cheers, fabiform | talk 23:54, 21 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hey David, thanks for the details on my article for paperboy - as a longtime writer but beginner Wikipedian, it helps out a lot. -- Ian Pugh

You and I disagree about a few things on the Duane Allman page. I left most of your previous edits alone, and only put back a few I felt strongly about. You can't have everything your way - because if I acted the same way, we'd be in a non-stop editing war. What's the problem with e.g. "Tragically," anyway? Also, the lack of capitalization in the quotation is accurate - I took a phrase out of a longer sentence. Finally, I refer to him as "Duane" because i) there are two Allmans on the page, and ii) that's how most people I know refer to him (perhaps because of i). Noel 15:36, 19 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Rather than reply here, I think the best thing to do is for me to put together a list of the point I have a particular position on, and put it on the talk page for that page, so that we have a permanent record in an expected place that people can consult. I'll go do that now. Thanks! Noel 01:08, 20 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Hi, I'm done with both the list of points on the talk page, and some improvements to clunky wording I recently put into the actual page. See what you think. Noel 02:47, 20 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I was curious how stating that Red Bull is the only drink that should be used in a Blaster is advertising - from my experiences, and the experiences of others, using another energy drink other than Red Bull does significanlly alter the taste somewhat; I wasn't trying to advertise "Red Bull" but I was merely trying to state a fact as a matter of ingredients and taste. However, since I'm new here, I would like to find out if even this would be considered advertising.

Re:Comic Books[edit]

I've read your comment about Lucky Luke and Jaap, as an addition there is another called agent 212(see List of comic books). Those books i've read since my teenage. And now just only a beautiful memory in my mind : ). If you're much interested in them, you can connect to external link in List of comic books. If not, maybe you'll have to wait until me or some other wikipedians fixed it(which I don't know when). Roscoe x 23:09, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Irismeister arbitration ruling[edit]

Following the ruling by the Arbitration committee on the matter of Irismeister (see Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Irismeister), you are reminded to discuss matters in accordance with good Wikiquette and to avoid making personal attacks in future. --Camembert

The above is me with my official arbitrator's hat on; this is just me: I wanted to say thanks for apologising for the remarks you made to Irismeister--I know it was ages ago, but thanks anyway. It really makes things a lot easier when people do that. All the best--Camembert

Well you have my respect for restraining yourself as much as you did - I'm not sure I could have :) By the way, I don't know if you noticed, but Irismeister has been banned from editing iridology indefinitely as a result of this ruling, so maybe it can be knocked into respectable-looking shape. Not a problem switching the two stadiums' order. I think I listed them in the order they were because Nashua comes before Vero Beach alphabetically; then again, Florida comes before New Hampshire (except in presidential primaries -- and I kind of liked "New Hampshire Primaries" for the Manchester team for the few days they had the name).

Today's Baseball Quiz: With the Fisher Cats in place, is anyone going to show up for the Pride when they come home from New Jersey? A friend of mine spoke to someone from your competitor in Manchester, who said, "We're not covering the Pride anymore."

Hi David, It's okay about your post to my user page. Being relatively new here, I'm still making lots of mistakes. The problem I am having right now is the wrongful reason for the deletion of my Wikipedia entry. Despite repeated efforts on my part to correct someone's ignorant allegation of copyright violation, the charge remained and the person who made the allegation refused to admit his mistake. Principles mean a lot to me, and if the Wikipedia administaration can't deal with willful opinionation made by their members, the project is going to have terrible times. I really don't care about my essay being deleted on proper grounds (POV), I'm reasonable about that. But I don't feel that I have to accept a wrongful accusation and want to see the deletion made for the PROPER reason. Copyright violation is a serious charge and should not be dismissed as simply frivolous opinionation. I want to see some kind of justice in this matter, and I'm not one to just roll over whenever someone gets authoritative without validity. That kind of crap gets me ornery and resistant. The folks here at Wikipedia have got to take a stand about willful administrators. I am not going away, so whenever this kind of thing crops up again, I'm going to have my say in the matter. I see no reason why they should be deleted, so please stop.

Thank you.

Hi, David! It's nice to see a fellow Nashuan editing my entries :). I used to live there for 3 years (my parents are still there and I visit them sometimes). v600[edit]

Thanks for pointing out that it did not link to Motorola or (List of Motorola products), I had created the V600 page from the manufacturer's entry on here. I have fixed that, and I plan on updating the page once I find more information relating to it. I do not agree, however, on your comparison of this phone to Dell Computers, seeing as most PCs are essentially the same (as far as components are concerned) but this phone is about one out of about 7 cellular phones that work on all four GSM bands. I would say that having a list of phones a page long but having no reference as to what they are or what they do is just about as useless as not having it at all. Ntm 23:17, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Question from a newby[edit]

You've worked on the article on Flatterland by Ian Stewart; now Ian Stewart seems to delight in puns and topical references and some examples appear in this summary:

Albert Square - fictional location in East London of the BBC Soap East Enders

Victoria Line - one of the lines in the London Underground (metro).

Hawk King - Professor Steven Hawkins

Is there any convention on spelling out such trivia? They don't really impact the main thrust of the article but:

a. Unless one knows British culture one would miss the London references

b. They are fun - at least if one likes puns

Also, should I post such questions on an author's talk page or on the discussion section of the article in question? I'm still finding my way around here.

Ahhh! I'm typing on a French keyboard on a Mac (long story) and I can't find the Tilda! My user name is Cje. I have to figure out a way of inserting ASCII codes or move to my PC. cje

Put such comments on the talk page of the article, because it has no "author" ... this being Wikipedia, writing and editing is sort of a free-for-all scrum, and comments put here will be missed by others who might have insight. To answer your question: These sound like legitimate topics for the article - please add them in, and see what happens. By the way, you can automatically type your name and time at the end of comments by typing ~~~~ at the end of your comments. - DavidWBrooks 00:57, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply - this evening I'll try updating the article as you suggest. Oh and I solved my "signature" problem! if I use the copy/paste I can get the ~~~~ without a tilda (~) on my keyboard. :-)

As of nnnn links[edit]

Hi David,

I saw you removed the [As of 2001] link in Shoplifting. Although it reads better now, I think part of the point of the [As of nnnn] links is to label factoids which will go out of date so that someone can go and research the up to date infomation and revise the article. It might be an idea to leave the link in place, but piped to read 'In 2001'... -- Solipsist 13:15, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I've been checking "as of" links from older years and tidying up or removing any that need it (most, I find, go to population figures for geographic articles). The shoplift reference struck me as unnecessary, and I couldn't find any updated figure, but certainly if you disagree, please restore it. - DavidWBrooks 13:59, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I see what you mean. It will probably be a few years before someone does another survey which estimages the value of shoplifting. It sounds like you know what you are doing. -- Solipsist 14:03, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hi David

Just a thought here, but I think it might be a good move to sign your posts when you put test on an anon page. It makes it a little more friendly if the person really is just experimenting and not vandalising. Fluoride poisoning[edit]

I took out virtually all of this article, which read like the beginning of an anti-public fluoridation argument. Please try to make this into an article, not a position statement on a controversial topic. - DavidWBrooks 21:39, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

  • I didn't know it was controversial. Just today somebody asked me about this issue, and I found out that there was nothing on Wikipedia, so I decided to create a stub article.
    • I will reinstate most of what I put there, but will change it in a way that doesn't look controversial. Feel free to include as much information as you can on it.

I apologize for my over-hasty statements. The original article read to me as if it was meant to become an anti-fluoridation argument; I certainly shouldn't attribute motive to others. - DavidWBrooks 01:34, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Under which speedy deletion criterion did you think it should be deleted? I can't find any matches. You will probably have to list it on WP:VFD instead. — David Remahl 01:40, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Please review WP:CSD... — David Remahl 01:48, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)
(Fortunately an adult stepped in and deleted the entry.)
So, which speedy deletion rule do _you_ call into effect?
If speedy deletions are too narrow, then the way to deal with that is to change the policy, for example by voting on the Managed Deletion proposal. Acting unilaterally is not OK. I agree that the article should be deleted and that deletion is the inevitable outcome of a VFD, but that doesn't make the article a candidate for speedy deletion, imho. — David Remahl 10:54, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Let's all remember that a candidate for speedy deletion is simply a candidate. Anyone who disagrees can put the deletion through the unwieldy process of listing and voting, taking up more hours to delete an entry, often, than it took to create it. If there is any doubt in my mind, I avoid instigating any deletion process, on the general principle that Wikipedia should be inclusive, not exclusive. --Wetman 17:11, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Contrary to what the history says, I didn't write that. I just took what was written at face value, and wikified and formatted it. Mo0 01:31, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Dear DavidWBrooks,

I would like to thank you for the help correcting both articles, since English is not my mothertongue and some words may imply subjective conceptions not so according an Encyclopedia.

Your rewriting in the article Max Heindel is fine; but on the article about the Rosicrucian Fellowship some of your changes have taken away parts of the objective aims of the Fellowship:

  • foundation: "herald of the Aquarian Age":
    • it was presented as so in its foundation; source: "The Rosicrucian Mysteries" by Max Heindel in 1913;
  • specific work: "The Fellowship conducts Spiritual Healing Service and it offers correspondence courses in Esoteric Christianity and Philosophy, Spiritual Astrology":
    • these courses are available since 1909;
  • method: "through harmonious development of the mind (occultist) and the heart (mystic) in a spirit of unselfishness Service to mankind and an all-embracing altruism."
    • "unselfishness" and "all-embracing" although seeming subjective are adjectifs necessary to describe which kind of "service". When used as a noun "Service" (S) means a specific labour (as you may find "Service" in the Armed Forces and in the Police).

Are these the polemic issues you have stated when rewriting it? These are part of the core issue of The Fellowship, so it should be fine to be in the Article.

I really appreciate your aid rewriting it to be more specific and NPOV as an article should be, but if you delete the "core issues" and also the "links" the article is not complete; and if you do it in this article, the same action you must have towards the other articles at Wikipedia too!

I have rewrited the article again, hope it is fine now.

Loudon Wainwright III[edit]

David, I don't think links to free music are unnecessary. Even if you're not a fan, you might want to listen to a song in order to know more. You've helped with User:Sietse Snel/Fix common mistakes project, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

RFC pages on VfD[edit]

Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney from WP:VFD. Each of them was listed by CheeseDreams. Your comments on whether I should do this would be appreciated. - Ta bu shi da yu 03:33, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hey, I'm going to shift your comments to the new admin noticeboard... if you have any specific objections to this please let me know. - Ta bu shi da yu 22:30, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words[edit]

Thank you for your kind words about Nafaanra language on my talk page. I'm pleased to see that those little articles are actually noticed :) mark 16:13, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hello David[edit]

I read your comments about 1975 in Prophecy! and I agree with you that it needed editing. That was the first draft and it took some time to gather the various bits together. I have now condensed my original in order to reflect a more crisp read while retaining elements essential to understanding why this booklet is of historical importance. I see that you work for a newspaper - I have a similar background. Thanks for the prod. MPLX/MH 02:31, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick work on the Windermere (lake) issue[edit]

I have also been a Ransome aficionado for years, do you know about TARS and TARSUS? Dabbler 03:44, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

National Map copyvio[edit]

Hi David,

Just curious what you found wrong with the entry on National Map. This was written by my student as part of an assignment.-- seltzoid (Jeremy)

I can't answer you if you don't have an account, unfortunately; there's nowhere to put the message! Are you checking back here? - DavidWBrooks 22:32, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Sorry didn't insert my name properly, I'm --seltzoid 15:08, Dec 14, 2004 (UTC)

Newspapers as ephemera[edit]

Newspapers are "ephemera" if their stories are poor, but "monuments of civilization" if their stories are good. :-) Ephemera Society lists them, see [2]. Makes sense, because for instance museums have the same kinds of conservation and interpretation problems as for old advertisements or concert programs. Stan 20:08, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Dark Star[edit]

Huh, wish I'd waited until after we decided to move the page before I fixed all the redirects (which used to point all over heaven [sic]). Sigh, I'm just gonna punt, I'm sick of these dopey things.... Noel (talk) 00:55, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Allman[edit]

Wish you'd ditched the stupid Lynyrd Skynrd thing instead. Noel (talk) 01:12, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Come to think of it, I could have lived withou the "crushing his skull", too. Noel (talk) 01:18, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

It was with me, to be exact. :-) I did dial out a lot of the enthusiasm; it's nowhere near as enthusiastic as it used to be. :-) Noel (talk) 02:04, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Trust me, I know the feeling! Yes, I did water it down, but it clearly still bugged you, 'cause you deleted it again! :-) So I made it even more vanilla and put it back, hoping this version is bland enough to pass muster! Noel (talk) 13:37, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

A Gentle Reminder[edit]

Hi. Espescially when deleting articles not of the "aldjkflakdj" or "Xyzzy is gay" type, please remember to give a short explanation of the reason for deletion. It effectively allays unnecessary confusion in the mind of onlookers.

(The spur for this reminder were a few deleted articles in the deletion log which appeared to have content related to local and/or historical political matters. It may be that the content was without merit, and I explicitly trust that it was; but deletion and its reasons should be as transparent as reasonably feasible. Giving justification for deletion with a word or two is a minor bother, but a great boon.) -- 213.243.182.63 03:06, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not a dictionary - just listing definitions of words isn't an article here. (There is Wiktionary for that!) Both "end" and "beginning" are interesting concepts that could make good articles - kind of a surprise we don't have them - but not in their current form. Besides, are those your definitions or did you copy them from dictionaries?

I understand that. Perhaps yo read my home page Questions. I am interested not so much about whet dictionaries say but more about so called first cause problem. YES, just for beginning I copied the definition from dictionary. But not to be final article; just a starting point.

O.K.

That's an interesting suspicion, but please don't insert it into articles unless it's topic to which this directly relates - and please don't insert it as your personal rumination. Wikipedia isn't a place for essays, especulation or philosophical debate, remember - the Web is full of other places for that. This is for factual encyclopediac articles. - DavidWBrooks 19:15, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I know all of this. Please read my user page here: User:Ott. This is the reason I have created my own Wikies. But, I respect Your rules and try to give my contribution to this encyclopedia as well...

It would be great if you would refrain from putting snide comments in your edit remarks.Goethean 23:04, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Dark-Sky Movement[edit]

Hi, when you moved Dark-Sky Movement to Dark-sky movement, you left a flock of double-redirects pointing to Dark-Sky Movement. You need to fix them too. (Having to do the cleanup is part of the price you pay when you rename a page! :-) Noel (talk) 01:35, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

No, it was just that I (some time before you did the move) carefully fixed them all (they used to point every which way) to redirect to Dark-Sky Momement (the then location of the page), and there was no way I could face fixing them all again! :-) Noel (talk) 13:30, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I gently suggested to the user in question that he'd gone a teensy bit overboard... :-) Some of them are quite useless, of course. Feel free to list the worst ones for deletion! Noel (talk) 14:26, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Linotype machine[edit]

Oops, that was my mistake. I fixed it. Thanks for pointing it out! – Quadell (talk) (help) 14:25, Dec 27, 2004 (UTC)
