Route information[edit]

Anyone have any thoughts on adding complete route information, as with the train article? Ambivalenthysteria

I was thinking of adding a list of suburbs/major roads/attractions that each route passes through/by, although I don't know if it's worth adding a complete road-by-road route for each number as well. There's also a number of sub-routes, like the 73 which goes only half the length of the 72 during non-peaks, things like that. I don't have a list of these routes though so there's something that needs finding. Also, a list of discontinued route numbers and closed routes (if there are any) would be an idea. I'll try and find this info but help is appreciated. Hypernovean 10:56, 24 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Either one seems like a decent idea to me. Maybe if we could get a map with the roads on it? I'll see what I can do about the tram routes. I'm very busy at the moment with Year 12, but when I can, I'm going to hit the libraries and get anything I can on the history of transport in Victoria; hopefully, something will turn up then. Ambivalenthysteria, 24 Feb 2004 (UTC)
If maps were made up, they would take up a lot of (screen) space, so each route might need it's own page, but not if there's only a map and little else. I'm going to do just what you are and find out what I can on the subject but I'm at uni so I'm busy too.. There are a fair few websites and forums around, I'll begin to amalgamate the information I find there first. Hypernovean 11:38, 24 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Would it be possible to add, for the discontinued routes, where they used to go? I was just thinking, too. How about we create individual pages for each route, and note the streets it stops at, as we would stations for the railway lines (except not linked). I think that'd make this considerably more useful. Ambivalenthysteria 12:32, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)

But then we'd have to fight off the Wiki-Is-Not-A-Street-Directory crowd. But I do agree it is worth looking at individual pages, seeing as individual train stations (for example) have them already. I also think that any route articles ought to have some kind of history information (whatever history there is for the modern route numbers that is, remembering that a lot of the current routes are reconstituted combinations of older routes, or have been repeatedly re-numbered), as well as interesting statistics, if available - such as predominant tram classes, home depot (those I have found), etc.
And then what about the closed routes? Should they have similar articles detailing their adventures through the Melway, same as the closed train lines?
I will, however, start creating articles for the tram depots, as I think there is enough information for decent articles. (However, I don't have time to do more than the basics for now).

Yes, that would be the only problem. Still, based on what I've seen on VFD lately, the tide is turning, and I think these sort of things are likely to get through a vote, as long as they're well written. I think we could come up with some decent articles, particularly if we add in some extra information like the suggestions you mentioned above. Ambivalenthysteria 11:10, 14 Jun 2004 (UTC)
As a first step, I have created a draft/mockup at User:Hypernovean/Drafts for the #72. TPK 09:01, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Looks great to me. The only other thing I can think of is that we could include details on what cross streets it stops at, and nearby landmarks. Ambivalenthysteria 09:16, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Considering that the Metlink maps of the tram routes tend to have a lot of errors, that might be a good idea. TPK 10:10, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)
However, the Yarra Trams site is excellent. Still, I think it could be worthwhile. Ambivalenthysteria 10:54, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I've added a lot of extra detail if you care to take a look. TPK 10:56, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I just did. I think this looks fantastic - not only is it useful, and does something even the Yarra Trams site doesn't do on their route pages (pointing out interchanges between routes), but it interlinks well with other Melbourne articles, and helps point out places that need articles, and might otherwise be overlooked, like the Alfred Hospital. Ambivalenthysteria 11:05, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

One nagging point: should these articles be Melbourne tram route X or Tram route X, Melbourne? I'd probably lean towards the first now I think about it. Any preference? TPK 11:43, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

No particular preference. Ambivalenthysteria 11:55, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Created Melbourne tram route 72, Template:MelbourneTramRoutes, Category:Melbourne tram routes, and linked the routes on the list page. TPK 12:17, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Fantastic. Now I'll have to do my bit. Ambivalenthysteria 12:33, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

As you saw, i used your templates for Melbourne tram route 112. Not sure about the extreme ends of the route, so if someone could do some checking. Especially the 'what other tram routes offshoot/cross here' for spencer st -> st kilda area. also was unsure of number of stops, and what tram classes run, so omitted. -- Generica 06:46, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)

I just saw it. Looks good! Ambivalenthysteria 06:48, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I'll see if I can fill in the gaps. TPK 07:47, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I've gone nuts adding 4 new route pages, and 13 (basic) stubs. One things I've noticed is that the majority of current pages use the old victrip site for references. While the domain and liks below it are still valid, it is being phased out. In addition, a lot of the route maps have been updated - especially where the City Saver Zone is in effect. Another thing that I've borrowed and implemented (from the Train station project) is using the font colours goldenrod for zone 1, blue for 2 and red for 3. I'm going to grind through a few of them every now and again, but help is much appreciated. gummAY 05:00, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please do update these - you might notice by the comments on this page that most of the work on these articles occurred more than eighteen months ago. They could certainly do with an update and a fresh pair of eyes. Ambi 06:45, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Recentism[edit]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a travel guide. An encyclopedia should include all closed tram routes (e.g. Elsternwick - Point Ormond and the network of the fomer Footscray Tramways Trust). 203.7.140.3 (talk) 01:46, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The 78? from Batman Avenue through South Yarra[edit]

I used to catch a tram to school in the mid-to-late 1980s that terminated at the Swanston Street end of Batman Avenue. I think it was the 78. It got discontinued when they built Federation Square. Unfortunately I can't remember the route name (East Richmond?) or any other details, but hopefully this jogs someone's memory and they can add it to the main article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.209.76.104 (talk) 09:49, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That was old route 70. 78 has been the same for quite a long time, and longer than the mid-80s 92.230.239.63 (talk) 19:40, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
