Monastery?[edit]

Does anyone know the truth of the following reference? Seems bogus to me, and I can't find a mention of it with a google search. I'm going to revert unless someone produces a reference to a credible source.

Monkfish gather and live in groups called "brotherhoods" and make "monasteries" to live in out of living clam shells.

Redirect correct?[edit]

Why does Goosefish redirect here? Anglerfish makes it sound like they're two different kinds of shallow-water anglerfish. A: it seems that goosefish is a general name for all these species. --Andrew 09:03, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)

I've noticed the general mistaken identity on the net and else where between The Angler Fish (Lophius Piscatorius or Breiflabb (NO)) and the Monk Fish / Angel Shark (Squatina Squatina or Havengel (NO)). Its taken me a while to find the difference myself but certainly the Angel Shark looks far more like a Monks Hood (hence the name monk fish) than the Angler Fish does! Why exactly do the two seem to be called the same thing?! -Phil

The original monkfish (angel shark) is called that because of its hood like appearance supposedly. There are several differing opinions on why angler fish are called monkfish including being bycatch that was given away to monasteries and to improve the value of the fish, as angler fish or sea devil had negative connotations. Origin of name[edit]

These strange fish got their name from Monks who used to go to the docks and ask for the ugly fish that the fishermen would throw away. Little did they know that the difficult to get meat is most comprable to Lobster. 151.204.31.157 21:46, Jan 10, 2006 (UTC)

Merge with Anglerfish[edit]

As proposed three weeks ago, I merged Monkfish with Anglerfish. Read the monkfish page first, to see the explanation of the relationship of the name, and then the anglerfish page to see that all your favorite information has been preserved.

Don't merge ever[edit]

OK this has happened a couple of times but it is incorrect and has been reverted...to explain "anglerfish" is the wider group, "monkfish" refers to the subset of anglerfishes of the genus Lophius. Thus the amalgamation is inappropriate.Tullimonstrum 10:09, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In Asia?[edit]
