Climate Change[edit]

Why is there no mention of climate change in this article? Without "swift action," over half South Taraway will be underwater in about 30 years, rendering the capital "unlivable," according to this a World Bank report. That's kind of an important detail to leave out, don't you think?

From http://www.climate.gov.ki/case-studies/tarawa/:

"According to a World Bank report, Kiribati’s capital of Tarawa—where nearly half the population lives—will be 25-54 per cent inundated in the south and 55-80 per cent in the north by mid-century unless there is significant adaptation. Factor in what this means for poisoning of groundwater, destruction of limited arable land and spread of disease, and you have an unlivable national capital." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:6C65:737F:FF7C:2052:28FE:4A81:D983 (talk) 17:00, 9 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bariki[edit]

Bairiki is just one of many islets on the atoll of Tarawa. Tarawa is the capital of Kiribati, although the admninistrative offices (and in a sense, therefore, the capitol "city") is Bairiki. Anyway, this article is about Tarawa, and not just Bairiki - Marshman 21:02, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Plusminus right: Tarawa is an atoll which consists of several (min. 24) islets. One of these islands is Bairiki. On this little island lies the village of Bairiki (the only town of this island), and that's the national capital of Kiribati. There are bigger towns on Tarawa. Belgian man 18:03, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Not exactly: the capitol is precisely South Tarawa (TUC), because neither Tarawa nor Bairiki are correct administrative divisions. Enzino 20:36, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, you're right. Belgian man (talk) 14:02, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tarawa AtollTarawa — None of the other Gilbert Islands have "Atoll" following its name. If we are going to use the original Gilbertese names I think they should all be consistant. This one sticks out. Plus I think we can all agree that all the items currently listed on the Tarawa disambiguation page were named after Tarawa Atoll. A Tarawa (disambiguation) link would be added to the top of the Tarawa page. —Henry W. Schmitt 07:07, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Battle results[edit]

The article reports that the US took the island after suffering heavy losses and the totals are given. This seems peculiarly WP:POV. Yes, the US considered the loses heavy, but 5,000 Japanese were killed and 1,000 US. A little bit heavier on one side than the other it seems to me. Student7 (talk) 00:39, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tarawa, South Tarawa and North Tarawa[edit]

South Tarawa and North Tarawa are administratively separate, and are different in almost every possible way - the history, economy, way of life etc etc. So it's messy to try to write about the two areas in one Tarawa article. I believe that this article should be mainly about the geography of Tarawa and its lagoon; most of the history, economic and cultural information should be in the articles on South Tarawa and North Tarawa (an article that didn't exist, but I have created it.) I have updated and corrected a few things on this Tarawa page, but not, so far, deleted or moved anything substantial. However if there are no objections, I think that this article should be made shorter, so there is not so much overlap between it and the North Tarawa and South Tarawa pages. Because this is quite a big change I will wait a bit for comments, and of course I will confer or revert if anyone disagrees. Thanks,--Obkiribati1 (talk) 20:28, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

External links modified[edit]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Tarawa. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:

Orphaned references in Tarawa[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Tarawa's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
