Mozart[edit]

i was just wondering, wasn't mozart a baroque composer, i mean if you look at his music he's made there's so much counterpoint so much elaboration i'd think he'd be part of this era but he wasn't on the list.

List order[edit]

I see why this list is broken into different periods within the Baroque period, but I question the wisdom of putting it in DoB order, since for some many of these composers the DoB is either not specific or disputed between sources. I would propose an alphabetical listing within periods for ease of use. I'll wait a few days and see if there are any disputes, then do it. It seems like an alphabetical list by last name would be helpful. That could possibly still be under the big timeline constraints (Early, Late, ...). --Amazzing5 16:22, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An alpha listing might be helpful -- in addition -- but what I found unhelpful was bars showing for a composer for years when I know they were not composing -- when they were children. Order?[edit]

I see how the composers are broken down into periods within the different time periods, but should we alphabeticaly order the names instead of by date?? By nationality[edit]

With the current layout, this list is almost useless. I think the composers should be firstly ordered by nationality, and then, under each nationality, by period - just like in the List of Renaissance composers.Nuno Raimundo (talk) 14:37, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Date[edit]

I think that we should keep the current listing since there are so many composers in the Baroque period. People can find the composers they want the quickest way through this method since almost each composer's name on a score has the composer's birth and death date.I am a violinist (talk) 13:28, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mondonville?[edit]

I came to WP this time to see where Mondonville fits re baroque->classical -- but not much luck: He's in the baroque WP category but it's not mentioned in his article and he's not on the sub-period lists. If anyone knows more, i and others would appreciate something more detailed being added. (Posted to his article and Talk:List_of_Baroque_composers and Talk:List_of_Classical_era_composers.) Mondonville is now on the Baroque list in the 'transitional' section. The mid eighteenth century was a time of considerable change in musical styles, and Mondonville's style – like many of his contemporaries – evolved. You could categorize him as late Baroque, French Rococo or Galante; personally I don't think I would describe his style as Classical, but others might disagree. There will be a number of composers in this era who you could justify being on both the Baroque era and Classical era lists. (RT) (talk) 17:50, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Without references for these classifications, I can only assume these are the opinions of the editors themselves. This violates WP policy.

William Boyce seems to be miscategorized. His Symphonies, his best-known works, are pure Baroque masterpieces.

Bonaventura Rubino[edit]

Comprehensive or selective list?[edit]

The text at the start of each section is something like: "Composers of the ... era include the following figures...". "Include" indicates that the list is not complete (if that's what you are referring to by "comprehensive"). GFHandel ♬ 07:34, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, yes, this answers my question. Also, I would be interested in your opinion about using date versus alphabetical listing within the subsections. I agree with previous comments made on this talk page that a straight alpha listing might be more helpful than the present system, which is too dependent on a rigid conception of dates; a lot of resorting would be in order anyway... your thoughts appreciated.--FeanorStar7 (talk) 07:46, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicates[edit]

I removed some duplicates and fixed some dates. Please check the changes.

I guess Pierre Danican Philidor (1647-1730) is a duplicate with wrong dates. There is one with - I guess - the correct ones (1681-) I have not corrected this. There is an Anne ... Philidor with the same birth year with different month as can be seen in French Wikipedia. (And many other Philidors.)

Double column list[edit]

I don't think the current format is very readable. Can we not put them into two columns and group them into more periods? Maybe a period of length 25 years? For example like this:

1600 - 1625 births

A B

1625 - 1650 births

C D
