"an historical"[edit]

Hi. Please don't change "a historical" to "an historical". "A historical" is acceptable everywhere and preferred in the U.S. and Canada. Even in Britain, where the "an" is more frequent than it is anywhere else, the New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary says in the entry for a only that "some retain an" before words beginning with h followed by an unaccented vowel. I think if you check any Australian dictionary or usage guide you'll find the same thing—a is normal, an is accepted as a variant. —JerryFriedman 16:43, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad if it's useful. I hope I didn't sound too harsh—it's one of my pet peeves. —JerryFriedman 01:30, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
