Requested move[edit]

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees → UNHCR – Rationale: No one ever says 'United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' when talking of this - they always say 'UNHCR'. Hence since the concept is "almost exclusively known only by its acronyms and is widely known and used in that form", WP:NCA says that the article should be at the abbreviation name as with NASA, CERN, SETI etc. … SteveRwanda 12:38, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose for now, I hear the full term often enough on the news, not just UNHCR. besides take a look at the other UN organisations, almost 99% of all the ones listed on Wikipedia have the full name (except special missions, which are normally known under their abbrv.) • Oppose, I would also reference it as "UNHCR" but to maintain uniformity throughout wikipedia I would keep the title as is. Bergmanucsd (talk) 19:56, 1 October 2016 (UTC).

Vandalism[edit]

There some more of that weird perma-vandalism (a la Sigmund Freud) running around on this page. Someone care to deal with this? 128.153.205.165 14:39, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

UNHCR aid sacks found in the hands of terrorists[edit]

Some news sources have reported of UNHCR aid packages being found in the hands of certain terrorist organizations. This might need to be mentioned in the article somewhere. -213.74.186.109 (talk) 08:53, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it is worth mentioning because only one news source mentions the finding of the aid sacks that I can find, and this discovery doesn't mean that the PKK received UNHCR aid. There's little notability on these specific news. Bergmanucsd (talk) 00:22, 1 October 2016 (UTC).

Efficiency[edit]

I think it would be beneficial to add in this article the percentage or number of refugees that were or are estimated to be resettled per year under the UNHCR. Thoughts? Zeltzini (talk) 20:01, 4 November 2016 (UTC). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zeltzini (talkcontribs)

Information on resettlement can be found at third country resettlement. Michtrich (talk) 22:53, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Public Awareness" Section[edit]

I think this section is either poorly written or just unnecessary. This section starts off by saying there are "several" new programs to increase public awareness, immediately to say there's only two. The section does not explain what these programs are and simply link the article to the "United Nations Millennium Development Goals." Would it be a good idea to remove this section and incorporate the "United Nations Millennium Development Goals." to another section? UNRWA section[edit]

UNRWA section states that:

"The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has a wider definition of "refugee" than does UNHCR"

Without providing a source, However, according to the UN https://www.un.org/en/sections/issues-depth/refugees/

Under international law and the principle of family unity, the children of refugees and their descendants are also considered refugees until a durable solution is found. Both UNRWA and UNHCR recognize descendants as refugees on this basis, a practice that has been widely accepted by the international community, including both donors and refugee hosting countries.
Palestine refugees are not distinct from other protracted refugee situations such as those from Afghanistan or Somalia, where there are multiple generations of refugees, considered by UNHCR as refugees and supported as such. Protracted refugee situations are the result of the failure to find political solutions to their underlying political crises. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.126.61.185 (talk) 12:44, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ideological racism[edit]

They use the generic phrase Ending Statelessness, and not the specific/hyponymic/subordinate phrasing: Ending Undesired/Unwanted Statelessness.

Some people are ideological stateless/philosophical stateless (as nouns; the phrase "ideologically stateless" is not a single noun).
Some are anarchists, some are communists and some are democrats (yes; some people believe that we need to have states for social management but we don't have to ideologically self-identify ideologically with one of them - some people also claim that not all people should have the exact same opinion, because they do not have the exact same role in society and also due to the freedom of speech).

Ideological racism: End Philosophy: Enforce Statehood - do not use the phrasing: Ending Unwanted Statelessness because ANY stateless idea should be oppressed!

Exact titling matters! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:2149:87D3:7200:E4FD:A4FC:77A9:A3DB (talk) 11:41, 4 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
