Hi Anton

I hope you didn't see the rollback as offensive. I had little time to correspond yeterday and wanted to restore the astronomical data before forgetting.

My feeling is that any formally numbered information should be included here. As chemical numbers are deemed eligible, so therefore should numbered astronomical data such as Saros numbers and Messier/NGC notation. As a matter of fact, the reason I included these data is that I was searching for the Saros number related to last spring's lunar eclipse. I would be pleased to follow youyr suggestion and leave a suggestion with the Wikinumbers project.

Following is how I would like the guidelines to read. I've copypasted the standard guidelines for Number N and added (in bold) what I would add. Since I'm not a member of this committee and therefore feel hesitant about an ad hoc addition of these guidelines to the page, peerhaps I can prevail upon you as a committee member to do so. Thanks. Hi, Anton. As a native English speaker can you, please, see Talk:Slovenians and say a few words about those matters. I would be very grateful for any help since we collaborate so long in Slovene wikipedia. I am a little bit sad because some users are not respecting works and contributions of other users. I have decided to use those 'preferred' terms, which are propagated by BT2 and some other users (Nohat, ~) just for the sake of the order here and not because they persuaded me. I can say also that they do not respect naming conventions as many articles were at first written using term "Slovene". You are right. I'm was just pissed off with my additions to that section being amended or deleted for their frivolity and their demanding a little from the reader. I must have forgotten that once I edit a page the text no longer belongs to me. I do think that that whole section is a bit ridiculous and have to restrain myself from posting an unbounded number of things in there. "One is 1/666 of the number if the Beast. One is half of two, and the ratio of one to the square root of two is the ratio between the lengths of the sides of a sheet of A4 paper. One is the number of thumbs on an average hand ..." where does one stop?

I think a good rule of thumb is: if this tidbit that is true of the number 1 was true of some other integer, would it be worth mentioning at the article on that integer?

Miles O'Brien

The journalist Miles O'Brien hosts American Morning on CNN, one of CNN's flagship shows. Internationally, CNN is still the #1 news network. Respectfully, Star Trek cannot even keep strong enough ratings to stay on the air. As for Homer Simpson, The Simpsons have won multiple emmy awards and are the most recognizable cartoon in television history. Miles O'Brien the journalist is more known (and real) than a character from a syndicated TV show that has been off the air for years. Now, I realize this is the internet where all sci-fi is universally beloved and worshipped, but this is an academic website...the CNN journalist is much more important. BigGuy219 19 August 2005

Yes, there was some speculation... but it was speculation based upon a reasonable extrapolation. Furthermore, he also deleted a valid rating from Finland (K-16) along with everything else. I think it would be the lesser evil to keep the paragraph, although perhaps it could be reworded... or moved to its own section. I still believe that the primary purpose of Wikipedia should be to provide usefull information rather than abide by its own rules. Of course, those rules usually work to this end, but in cases where they don't it's best to try to work our way around them if possible. As I said, if you feel that the section can be reworded to better comply with wiki policy, please do so. Esn 21:42, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

B flat etc.

No, I didn't discuss it with anyone else. In my experience, sharp or flat notes are almost always written "A flat", "G sharp", etc. I have loads of classical CDs and a fair amount of piano manuscript music, and hardly any of it places a hyphen between the letter and the word "sharp" or "flat" (or "natural", for that matter). I assumed that one person had written the articles using a less common variant that he or she considered to be the best option. Do you prefer the insertion of the hyphen? I noticed your comment on the importance rating given to Znám's problem, and I was wondering if you would want to help out with on-going project to grade mathematics articles? In-universe tags

Hi, I wasn't the one that put the tags there, but I have placed in-universe tags on fictional subjects on wikipedia. The reason the tags are in place, not to dispute that the information in the article is fictional, that is known. What needs to be done is in-universe information needs to be trimmed down, and real-world information needs to be the primary point of the articles, i.e. casting information, character development (real-world, i.e. writing), critical commentary, reception, etc. This is the reason the tags are in place, these need to be the primary point of articles about fictional subjects. As long as the information that is in-universe is the primary subject of the article, it is tagged to bring to the attention of editors to please contribute to help clean the article up. Hope this clears things up about why they were tagged as such. There is a link on the tag to click on regarding the in-universe policy also, for further reference. Thank you. But have you actually read the articles, or are you just assuming they lack real-world info? In at least one case, other users have tried to address this, but the tag gets slapped right back on. This tells me that the tagger (which you tell me is not you) doesn't care about Wikipedia, but merely about discrediting articles he doesn't like because he was unable to get them deleted. • Yes I have read the articles myself, some of them I didn't quite agree with the tagging, others I read and tagged myself. We aren't trying to get them deleted, we are trying as part of WikiProject Star Trek trying to get the articles up to a better standard, so they may be nominated for good article or featured article by the standards set forth for those articles. Currently, the Kira Nerys article has had good information added to it, but we still need more. I myself am researching real-world info about TNG characters to add to the articles, but I haven't added what I've found yet, trying to rework the articles before I do that. I don't remember any Star Trek character articles ever getting nominated for deletion, maybe I'm wrong. The tag doesn't nominate it for deletion, it simply draws attention to users, kinda saying, hey - we need some more info, if ya got it, please help us out. I myself am a big Trek fan, and don't want to see any of these get deleted, I want the articles to be so much better than they can be. Ejfetters 16:23, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

• I've been one of several users to restore in-universe tags to the character articles. As far as I know, they've never been AfDed -- and I take perverse pleasure in running a lot of fiction-related material through the AfD process. But character, no. And, as I mentioned on another talk page, the in-universe tag is not meant to be disparaging; it's unfortunate that you interpret it as such. They serve to attract the attention of editors in a position to add needed information. For example, I don't have the DS9 companion or DVD commentaries, so I can't add a whole lot of production info. and other real-world information required by WP:FICT and WP:WAF -- but, other editors do, and I hope the flag draws their attention and focus. Similarly, the in-universe tags in a lot of Star Wars vehicle articles caught my eye; I took up the onus to improve them, and one is now tagged as a Good Article and I and other editors are working on making it a Featured Project. So, please don't interpret the in-universe tag as an attempt to criticize; rather, they are attempts to flag other editors' attention for improvement. --EEMeltonIV 16:27, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

• On my talk page you've said the right words, but you haven't said the right words on the article talk page. The right words would be tailored to each specific article and would show that you have read each and every article you tagged. Actions speak louder than words, and right now, your actions make assuming good faith exceedingly difficult (or perhaps you've meant it as some kind of test from the beginning?). Anyway, responsible tagging is not something I invented, though maybe I did come up with the name. The concept has been around as long as tags have, along with the awareness that tags can be abused. Always subject to debate of course but-- (and I am enough of a Brian fan to have heard all of his symphonies, a few in several performances (the wonderful no. 2 in three, I think), both concertos and the concerto for orchestra, one of his operas- only one so far- among other works- multiple times in many cases and looking forward to hearing more- not enjoying all of them, but many!...- to attempt to establish at too much length, I hope that it is not subjective judgment that colors my thought here (protesting too much I guess.) )- removing Mahler 3 before removing the Gothic? :) I'm not at all sure I'd remove the Gothic either, with you there... and thank you for beginning to pare the list. Symphony No. 1

I wholly agree with you, piping should be used to make Wikipedia read more like proper English than Fortran, but many decisions made early on by people who don't realize there's a difference between a computer language and a natural language still plague us. It's policy not to pipe on disambiguation pages — never mind that doing so would make it read more like a lexicon than a computer manual — and who are mere mortals like you and me to question policy ? Sometimes you have to take policies on a case by case basis. "Symphony No. 1 (Beethoven) written by Ludwig van Beethoven" reads kinda dumb, in my opinion, in part because it contains redundance, so I went ahead and changed it. New Bruckner images -- could we get higher resolutions?

I appreciate the value of having images that reflect Bruckner's age when he began to work on each symphony. However, I am having issues with the quality of the images: they are generally of too low a resolution to look good on a full-size monitor (at least for me). I've reverted the most extreme case (8th symphony), but I see the problem in varying degrees with the other new images used in symphonies 1-7. If we could find higher-resolution versions of these images it would fix the problem. I don't know whether I have some specific browser setting that's causing this issue but all other images on Wikipedia generally (including the older Bruckner image) look fine to me. Do not change "Baby on Board" from a redirect to a page without a description! If you look, the MSN site has no description of the plot of the episode! Also, this edit summary, "Blind! The reference was right there!" is not constructive. CTJF83Talk 17:47, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Operating multiple accounts is not permitted when they are used to edit the same articles and debates.
