Redirect[edit]

Umm, that Tampa, Kansas "town" has a population of 144 - now compare that to Tampa, Florida. I'm setting this to redirect to Tampa, Florida. To me it looks obvious, let me know if I'm missing something. Spangineer 19:32, Nov 22, 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia in NOT a popularity contest. The redirect for "Tampa" should come to this article. • SbmeirowTalk • 12:05, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation pages are created so that users can find the article they're looking for as quickly as possible. In cases where one of those articles generates far more page views than that of all other possible choices combined, wikipolicy allows for an automatic redirect with a link back to the disambig page on the primary article. (See WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for the relevant guidelines.)
Using this tool, you can see that Tampa, Florida has received almost 40,000 page hits in July while all the other non-Tampa, FL related articles on the disambig page have received about 500 combined. That's exactly the situation that automatic redirects were designed to handle.
Also, while putting "Australia" at the top makes alphabetical sense, I don't think most users who search for "Tampa" are looking for an article about a ghost town in the Outback. Zeng8r (talk) 15:05, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
