Thanks for all the kind messages. As I said somewhere down there,

... That's very kind of you all. To be honest I am not really sure if I am "back" in terms of participating how I used to. I'm still thinking about it and how to fit things in! :) Nevilley 08:54, 12 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[Older] I've decided to give Wikipedia a break for a while, for a variety of reasons. I wish the project much success, and I send greetings to my friends here. Bye for now. Nevilley 09:02 19 May 2003 (UTC)

Sad to see you go and hope it is not too prolonged. I also that a debacle over a certain transport problem alleviation scheme page is not of the reasons! Pcb21 09:38 19 May 2003 (UTC)

I'm sorry to see you go as well, Nev. I hope you'll come back soon - you've written some good stuff, and it's been fun having you around. --Camembert

I've found that it is very healthy to get away from Wikipedia for a while and then come back charged up and ready to go. The daily squabbles do take their toll and it is therefore good to reset things once in a while and concentrate on other areas of our lives (or, as in my case, put my life back in order - I'm a hopeless Wikiholic :). I hope you come back soon and I look forward to reading yet more brilliant prose penned by you. --mav 20:04 26 May 2003 (UTC)

Welcome back. :) Angela. 17:05, Jan 28, 2004 (UTC)

Hey, good to see you back! Pete/Pcb21 (talk) 09:04, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Yes, great to see you're back - I hope it's for good! James F. (talk) 13:46, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)

No problem on Black Dyke Band - would've left you a note that I'd done it but my connection broke, then the door bell rang, then I forgot... Good to see you sort of back, by the way :) --Camembert

I've been a bit slow noticing you're (sort of) back. Welcome! I'm as active as ever on pics, 800 added since I started with WP in Jan 2003.

Hi Nevilley, on Holy Island - guess I overreacted a bit to its being shunted right to the bottom. I'll see if I can sort out a compromise of some sort in the next few days. The reserve aspect is very important though, more so than the human history on the international stage. Right that the majority of the human visitors are there for the priory & castle, not the birds, but visiting isn't essential for them, it is for the wildlife :-) MPF 14:41, 24 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hi Nevilly. Do feel free to indicate the link on the page Baron Gisborough. -- Emsworth 22:56, Feb 24, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Nevilly - no reason for that change, it's just that there was an edit conflict and I thought I'd retype your change rather than all mine. When I retyped it, I didn't put in the / because I didn't think it was necessary. Warofdreams 17:14, 25 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hi Nevilley, seems we both took a long(ish) break. Nice to see you're "back". I'm giving it another try and won't let it get to me quite so much. User:Renata

Nobody refers to it, but its true. See [1]. Morwen 10:22, Mar 7, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Nevilley,

Mostly out of curiosity at this point, I'd like to pick up a matter we were dealing with a few days ago. What you said was:

"Yes, you're right. Sorry. [Marsalis's Haydn Trumpet Concerto recording] was a very bad example of a crossover ... so I have removed it entirely as you suggest. Nevilley 00:41, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)"

I would appreciate your explaining why the recording is a "very bad example"--it had seemed like such a straightforward case to me! I notice elsewhere on the Wikipedia/Web that you have a strong interest in trumpets, so you must have a reason. Thanks in advance, Opus33 00:41, 1 Apr 2004 (UTC)

P.S. Please note that Crossover (music) has since become a separate article.

Hi, Nevilley.

Your defence of Wikipedian Wit is sweet and meet.

If there was a "rapturous round of applause" emoticon, I would place it here...

I think the word I'm looking for is: "props".

Re:corny query[edit]

"Wheat" seemed more neutral. It's a sheaf of grain, like the one displayed at the Eleusinian mysteries, not an ear of maize that's in the god's hand. But what if it's actually barley.... oh dear oh dear.... Wetman 21:10, 12 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Bug reports[edit]

from the pump

At the top it says don't report bugs here. People are, however, doing so. Is this OK really? If I don't have to go over to some other namespace to do so I would rather not. --Nevilley 21:02, 30 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Do as we say, not as we do! ;-) Seriously, though, the main developers of the software find it much easier if all the bug reports are kept in one place - preferably at sourceforge, which has specially-designed software for tracking them. Pages have been set up on meta as a compromise, because feedback is genuinely useful, but people were reluctant to use sourceforge - at least that way you can use the software you're used to. Leaving it elsewhere is essentially laziness (or OMTWA?), and is likely to result in the report being lost and forgotten. - IMSoP 21:41, 30 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. To be honest my worry was just that - that by leaving a comment there, on the meta, I had actually helped it to be lost/forgotten. However, the thing I was moaning about has indeed been fixed, so maybe the system really DOES work, yippee! Thanks. :) --Nevilley 22:22, 30 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
There is no guarantee developers will read this page, and as the village pump is often archived, problems and suggestions are very likely to be lost if made here. Please use m:MediaWiki 1.3 comments and bug reports or sourceforge. Angela. 22:37, 30 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Template conversion[edit]

You asked about the template conversion. Here is a (hopefully useful) slightly non-technical answer. Tim Starling wrote a script to convert all the old {{ to the new template style. Thus {{msg:stub}} becomes {{stub}}. First he had to find all the Mediawiki and move them into a new namespace, not very hard. Now he has to search the entire database and remove all those msg: in the templates. Hope that helps. Burgundavia 09:42, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Meetup[edit]

Hi Nev - no, the meetup wasn't invitation only or anything like that, and I'm a bit annoyed I never thought to mention it to you here on your talk page... then again, it's good to keep the riff-raff out, eh? ;-) There was a page dedicated to it at User:Jimbo_Wales/2004-06-05, but you probably wouldn't know about it unless you knew about it, if you see what I mean. We'll probably have to think of a better way to advertise it come the next one. --Camembert

Link to images[edit]

to link to an image without displaying it (as in speedy deletion page) put a colon in fron of the word image [[:Image:foo.jpg]]. BTW I read the comment above, the next meetup will possibly be on the first saturday of June next year so look out for announcements about that time. theresa knott 11:07, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Gt St Barts church[edit]

I named it with hyphens 'cos that's what I know it as, probably derived from my dip-reading of Pevsner. Either's fine with me, really, but I think that with hyphens is more... common? Clear? Faithful? *shrugs*

Looks like Nevilley is gone. But just in case he can't resist taking a peek--

Thanks for your reply about Wynton Marsalis and the Haydn Trumpet Concerto, Neville.

As a possibly-cheering thought, I can note that after almost 40 years, Mozart's Piano Concerto K. 467 seems to be no longer the "Elvira Madigan" concerto; and after 40 years, hardly anyone will associate the Haydn Trumpet Concerto with the Marsalis recording.

It would seem tacky to take advantage of your departure to revert, so I won't. Good luck going cold turkey. Cheers, Opus33 14:57, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Images[edit]

That's no problem - I'm having a general tidy of images as they are a mess. I'm presuming that if a user uploaded an image which they said they took that it is licensed under the GFDL or we would be stuck with even more unverified images. Secretlondon 11:20, 19 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Bye - and thank you for your contributions. Secretlondon 12:32, 19 Jul 2004 (UTC)
