This is impressive. Kudos to Erik. -- Derek Ross

Yes, very good. Patrick 12:25 May 13, 2003 (UTC)

Plucker[edit]

I suggest Plucker as a more appropriate solution. Plucker understands HTML and is an open source project. See http://www.plkr.org/ for details Trevor Blake

Plucker may certainly have some advantages over TomeRaider, which does not (yet?) support HTML. Still I would like to see it work first. For instance, how will the Palm cope with 150,000 small files?

Having said that I do welcome every effort to spread the Wikipedia.

Several ports to palm devices can coexist very well. It means more choice, which is a good thing most of the times.

See also this mail on Wikitech which describes how to generate a static html dump. Maybe this can be used as input for Plucker.

I can't find this scripts, do you know where could i find it please ? Thanks

---==Re: Plucker==---

I really agree with this. The tomeraider proprietary may be important for maintaining the quality of this wiki for the PDA. However, tomeraider is commerical software and an open source seems much more appropriate given the nature of Wikipedia. Now may be the time to switch. Especially now that Tomeraider while excellent software does no longer support the TR2 format of this wiki. - PDAJohnM 1/14/05

"WikiPDA"[edit]

Shouldn't this be called "WikiPDA"? Graft 14:59 5 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Babylon client[edit]

What's about a client program like Babylon for Wikipedia? Click on a word anywhere at the screen and get the Wikipedia content if existing...

Hi 145.228.82.200, great idea! Let me know when you have a β-version and need someone to test it.

PDA recommendations[edit]

In the coming months, I will be purchasing my first ever PDA. Thusfar, I really don't know much about what to look for in a PDA and what the PDA lingo is.

I want to make sure that I get a PDA that can handle the size of the English version of the TomeRaider database.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated regarding what to look for and what to avoid. Thanks. Kingturtle 22:13, 13 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Well, the English TomeRaider database is about 120 MB right now, and the newer versions will be larger. Thus, you'll want to buy a PDA that has an expansion card slot (virtually all of the newer ones have one type or another). Secure Digital cards can hold up to 1 GB (a 2 GB card is rumored to be under development); Compact Flash cards can go up to 2 GB (possibly past that?), and Microdrives will usually work anywhere a Compact Flash Drive works and have a larger capacity.
Anyway, either of these card types with a capacity >= 256 MB should be more than adequate for holding the English WP. The size of the handheld's RAM is unimportant, as the entire database will be held on the card. Just make sure that the PDA has an expansion card slot. HTH! --bdesham 22:59, Dec 13, 2003 (UTC)
The December version is almost 190 Mb, + 23 Mb for the Arial Unicode MS font if you want math and foreign characters, so 256 Mb will not hold the July 2004 version (yet to be released TomeRaider 3 promises image support, so I might add a few, say country maps and flags). Compact Flash cards are considerably less expensive than all other formats, due to their long existence and relatively large size, which makes them easier to produce. However CF slots are less and less common in new handheld models. I am a happy Dell AXIM user. This machine has both CF and SD slots. Erik Zachte 13:46, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Please, dear Erik !!!! Could you make your latest version of Wikipedia for tomeraider as soon as possible. I cant convert it myself and i am sure there are thousands who will be so grateful to you. I hope to hear from you, Vlad

I know I promised it for July, but I've spent 90% of my free time the last three months on upgrading the scripts to TomeRaider 3 which is in beta. TR 3 will feature categories, images and more, but has quite another input format, so lots of work. I'll see what I can do though. Erik Zachte 20:28, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Today I sent 3 CD's full of TomeRaider files to Jimbo. 1.5 Gb is really too much to upload. It should take no more than four days to arrive. After that it all depends on when Jimbo will visit the computer location, which may be weeks, no idea. Erik Zachte 00:26, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Why isn't a BitTorrent tracker used for downloads? Masi27185 11:01, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)

That might be a good idea. The author of TomeRaider suggested this as well. He will start actively promoting Wikipedia once TR 3 is out. That might indeed bring heavy traffic, even without his involvement I had already over 13,000 page visits on my site, no idea though how many visitors actually downloaded the files. Erik Zachte 13:52, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia (german version) for Palm OS now also available trough Bittorrent![edit]

Since today, the german Wikipedia for Palm OS is available trough Bittorrent: Here is the link: [1] Nice download, Write4them, Luxembourg.

Any plans for MacOS X compatibility?[edit]

To download to a Mac and browse offline?

You'll have to ask the author of TomeRaider at www.proporta.com. I expect the answer will be no (if any, they are not too responsive). Is there not a PC emulator for MacOS ? Erik Zachte 11:15, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Eagerly anticipating the next release...[edit]

Is there a plan for when the next release is going to be made? Erik Zachte mentioned above, that the "July 2004 release" will not fit on a 256MB flash card. --Kelby 00:32, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Well I'm pretty sure I will not make the mentioned target date :(
Currently I'm pretty busy on Β-testing TR3 (new: categories, even more compression and faster searches, images, in a few months you can carry a 5GB version of Wp with you if you want to, I'm working on image resizing and filtering for the rest of us,) Then there are some other Wp projects that take time (still trying to find out who messed up EasyTimeline and what to do about it). You can generate your own copy of Wp with the Perl scripts on my page. Clear instructions, many people do it on a regular basis. By the way current version of en: Wp is already 300 Mb. Erik Zachte
The latest version I have compiled (July 1, 2004) for TomeRaider 2.62 for PocketPC is 324,333KB. It fits on my 340MB IBM Microdrive and reports its size as 317MB. -- Frank Williams August 6, 2004 (EST)
Good to know (by the way for those who wonder: 324,333 / 1024 = 316.73) Erik Zachte 03:11, 7 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia Pocket PC Dec 2004 file size[edit]

537MB is a little inconvenient, slightly too large to fit on a 512MB. Is there any way of obtaining a slightly smaller version? Jooler 23:09, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I have a 500MB version that I built myself, which just squeezes onto my 512MB card, it is from early December 2004. Not sure the best way to get it to you, if you had a GMail (or Yahoo?) email account I could email it to you. Otherwise I could run an FTP server.

Has any body done their own build lately? I'm thinking about getting a new memory card and want to ensure it will fit the latest WP, with a bit of headroom for future versions. --Kelby 23:05, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I've just bought a 1gb card, so problem solved laterally. Jooler 07:19, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Can you explain how you reduced the size of the wp database? I'd like to have a 250MB file, is there a way to delete newer articles, or omit certain categories?

June 2005 EN Corrupt?[edit]

I've downloaded the TR3_WP_EN_(P)PC_TXT.zip file twice and both times it has been corrupt - its failed unzipping and the MD5 fails. Am I just really unlucky? 84.12.20.230 09:57, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I've fixed it, was unlucky!

German Version[edit]

hi there, don´t know if someone knows it... but there are allready new german versions outthere. first of all our small version is nor 350MB small, but the real big one is 1,1GB big and has 78,000 images! - cu AssetBurned 01:08, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

english version only for TomeRaider?[edit]

hi there, is there only a TomeRaider version or are there more english versions? maybe there should be a page like Wikipedia:For PDAs with all versions for Palm, Pocket PC, Linux PDAs and so on. - cu AssetBurned 01:11, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

How to upload a file ?[edit]

Hello :-)

I am converting the german wikipedia dump to Tome Raider each time. I want to share it with other people, too. I want to upload it to wikimedia ? How can I do that ?

Linux[edit]

Make Linux version too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Frap (talkcontribs)

The ebook reader of choice (perhaps the only that is usable anyway) does not support Linux. Erik Zachte 00:33, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

False notice on limited content removed[edit]

Text-only version does not limit number of articles. It contains all texts of complete Wikipedia (article namespace) at the time of production.

By the way to pre-empt questions: I've been working for months on an script upgrade, which supports newer Wikipedia syntax features like conditional templates and other complicated stuff. It is still a work in progress. Please be patient. Erik Zachte 00:33, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks! I use Wikipedia on my PDA, and I greatly appreciate your effort. -- Rmrfstar 01:08, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Open Source[edit]

How do you do this with open source software? I know people have wikipedia in plucker, but I can't find any actual files anyplace. JeffBurdges 11:59, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another viewer for offline viewing on a palm pilot[edit]

I've written one myself. Very, very basic, but it does what I want it to do. Similar to what Erik does in the conversion (but no where near as good as his!), but my main issue was the amount of time it takes the TR3 compiler to produce the .tr3 file. Mine takes about 6 hours using perl/cygwin. The viewer is homebrew and, as I said, basic. Does links and searching. Datafile (a .gz hybrid) is about 1.9Gb. Just the text with minimal formatting (no tables). Palm/Tx.

See http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?p=991133#post991133

It also does other wiki's too.
