I had no idea that female birth control pills had placebos in them. cution 08:33, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Yes, generally seven of them as explained in 'Oral contraceptive'. That way the patient can take a pill every day and still menstruate. -- 66.32.101.117 03:24, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

It's somewhat common for the to last week of pills, rather than being placebos, to be a low dose iron supplement. It's got no additional birth control effect, but it reduces the small chance of anemia. Nkedel 22:04, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

hey, has the male pill been released on the market yet? -matt

Not in the US as yet. Nkedel 22:04, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Testosterone

This was mooted as a contraceptive once. What happened? Rich Farmbrough. 14:50, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

can somebody cite the sources regarding where they found information claiming the male pill can lead to permanent sterility? i've looked it up, and it's as if its a huge secret or something, because i can't find any recent articles or clear details on the male pill. -matt

Well given that there is no viable male pill yet, considerations of the potential health effects of whatever male pill eventually develops (if one does develop), seems premature. If there is one particular candidate that has been researched that has been linked to sterility, then it is worth mentioning if it can be adequetly sourced (i.e. from a peer reviewed journal) Nil Einne 13:14, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Actually I see it is already mentioned now :
Pills made from gossypol, a compound found in cotton seeds, have been abandoned as a potential male contraceptive because of unreliable reversibility in clinical trials. Researchers have suggested that gossypol might make a good non-invasive alternative to surgical vasectomy

female FSH?

Now, I might be dumb, but isn't FSH the same in males and females? Males produce FSH,stimulating Sertoli cells, or so I've heard.

Also, I don't understand why giving a man testosterone would lower his sperm count. Does testosterone not also contibute to the the stimulation of sperm production, as well as invoke secondary sex characteristics?
