Map wrong[edit]

The map indictes Akita prefecture. Iwate is east of Akita facing the Pacific Ocean. Desktoptetsu 11:34 14 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Mergers[edit]

Be careful with the language for city mergers, specifically about merging "with" and "into". "With" would imply a merger on equal terms (vs. an annexation by the larger town/city) but isn't clear on the new city's name. "Into" could imply either an annexation by a larger city, or the formation of a new city by the merging municipalities. The difference between annexation and merging on equal terms is that in the former case a pre-existing city simply expands, whereas in the latter, a new city (whether by the same name or not) is formed (usually requiring renegotiation of the city government structure, policies, etc.).

For example, the Jan 1 merger of "the towns of Ishidoriya, Ohasama, and Towa into the city of Hanamaki" could mean that the three towns merged and renamed themselves "Hanamaki," or it could mean they were annexed by the pre-existing city of Hanamaki.

In this case Hanamaki City merged on equal terms with the three towns, and the new city's name also happens to be "Hanamaki." I changed that instance accordingly, but I don't know the details of the other mergers enough to correct them. Eric's penguin 01:51, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Earthquake Size?[edit]

This article gets the level of the Earth at 7.2. But the actual page of the earthquake lists it at only a 6.8. Does anyone have a reason for this difference?

"Name"[edit]

I added a citation for the story about the oni. It's in Japanese, and I'm not sure how to include a partial translation of the text in my reference, but it basically says "The gods made to tie [or chain] the oni between the three rocks of Mitsuishi, but when the oni wailed and begged for forgiveness, proclaiming that he would never perform violent acts again, the gods took pity on him. They made him promise never to return to this place, and forced him to impress his hand on the rock. They then drove the oni out of this land. It is said that even now, after a heavy rain, one can see the oni's handprint on the top of the rock.
