Syrmia[edit]

I've anglified the title of the article according to Vukovarsko-srijemska županija (here is titled as Vukovar-Syrmia County). Kamarad Walter (talk) 08:21, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This title is in Croatian, and the entire district is in Serbia - so I believe that the name should be maintained in Serbian, or at least based on the Serbian. FMasic (talk) 18:43, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

use of the term Syrmia in modern-day administrative subdivision names[edit]

Please see Talk:Syrmia#use of the term Syrmia in modern-day administrative subdivision names. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 19:31, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

Actually, the official and academic translation is Srem District[1][2] or District of Srem.[3][4][5] The unilateral move in 2008 to Syrmia District has since been reverted a couple of times. It should stay at Srem District.--Zoupan 06:29, 23 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In the meantime, 'Zoupan' was blocked as a sockpuppet, so I'm less inclined to take what they say seriously. Regardless...
MirkoS18 can we apply the same logic from Talk:Vukovar-Syrmia County here? If Srem redirects to Syrmia, this exception doesn't quite make sense. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 20:52, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Considering what I said in the earlier discussion on Vukovar-Syrmia I don't see how I can say anything else but to agree. It would be my preference, particularly considering there are multiple official names for okrugs in Vojvodina (in Serbian, Slovak etc.). The only potential counterargument is that contrary to Croatian countries, all articles on okrugs in Serbia seems to use local names? Nevertheless, my strong preference would be to name it District of Syrmia or something like that. In general, if there is a cross-border region (with some small name difference) I think we should use English name if there is one. Different names may mislead or imply that there are 2 regions. There is one Syrmia region, one Bačka, one Baranya, one Istria, one Banat etc. and I think that administrative names clearly derived from them should recognize that reality despite contemporary state borders. The common state-centric practice may be different (or probably differ from case to case), it's just my opinion. I will be happy to hear arguments from anyone who may think differently, but right now I certainly prefer renaming the article per VSŽ example.--MirkoS18 (talk) 21:33, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Joy As there seems to be lack of interest on this talk page, would you now like to make a formal RM? I don't want to make similar procedural omission here, but I will support the proposal.--MirkoS18 (talk) 14:48, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, will do that if I can find some time to examine sources. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 17:34, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I had a look at https://www.google.com/search?q=%22syrmia+district%22&tbm=bks and indeed all of those seem to be references to what we have described at Syrmia County. A more general search for https://www.google.com/search?q=%22districts+of+serbia%22&tbm=bks also seems to tilt towards historical districts and not modern-day ones, though. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 11:56, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
