Melting?[edit]

Do this people know that venus is the hottest planet on the Solar System. Didnt these objects melt? -Pedro 10:56, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The various spacecraft that landed on Venus were designed to survive for a short time on the surface. Some operated for an hour or two. They did quit working when the surface heat finally overwhelmed spacecraft insulation and reached the interior of the spacecraft, destroying the electronics. The maximum temperature on the surface of Venus is about 773 K. Titanium melts at 1941 K, steel melts at about 1645 K, aluminum melts at 934 K and copper melts at 1356 K. - The only way to tell is if a future mission conducts an audit of the various locations to see what might still exist. Certainly some of the smaller, flimsier items, such as parachutes, are undoubtedly long destroyed, though. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 15:07, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Long-term cummultive heating over decades may be a factor, however. Also, Pioneer 12 (Orbiter) and Magellan should be mentioned, although they probably burned up before reaching the surface.
